Bouba/Kiki Effect | Why Some Words Sound Round and Sharp

What is the Bouba/Kiki effect? In this video, we will be discussing why we associate round objects with round noises and sharp objects with sharp noises. In a study done by Ramachandran and Hubbard, it was found that 95% of English and Tamil speakers associate the word bouba with the rounded shape and the word kiki with the pointy shape. This has many implications for psychology and language studies.

Note that even the shape of the letters K and B reflect this principle.

The test was done “across a majority of cultures and languages in which it has been researched,[1] for example including among English-speaking American university students, Tamil speakers in India, speakers of certain languages with no writing system, young children, infants, and (though to a much lesser degree) individuals who are congenitally blind” so you’re completely incorrect it has nothing to do with the coincidence that it sounds like those words 😂
