Getting 23.7v out of the mains side but no beep, light or anything written to a USB key, please could you tell me if you have any ideas where to look next on the low voltage side without an oscilloscope. I have the Texas development kit but have yet to find the time to fire it up. Want to determine if it is corrupted Flash or a tired DSP. I have to say that I find it hard to agree with suggestions by Tubers that the DSP is tired. I have used them in designs and they never got tired but it could be a bad batch.

Hi MS, A great video thoroughly enjoyed it. I have the same Bose product which is faulty. The symptom of the faulty is high pitch squealing noise then no output. I am a retired electronics tech that can swing a soldering iron, and an AVO but, would appreciate a hand. I plugged the unit in and all worked fine. I believe something to be overheating? Nothing obvious. I intend to reflow the joints around the mainboard and then soaking to see if that helps. I am electrically safe (most of the time).

Hello Magic Smoke. I am currently working on the exact board. Did this indeed fix the unit? I am about to replace the smaller semi conductors on the bottom like you did, just wanna see if this is a viable first step to diagnosis it. (Also what is the name of the smaller chip your working at 20:17?) Do you think, that diode missing was the issue or the two small chips underneath? (Obvs it wouldnt work without the diode) but was it the diode missing or those chips failing + the transistor (Maybe the person who worked on it thought it was that, but it ended up being what you replaced?) Will post a video of my findings soon.

  • @razenby

Fixed fine. The two chips underneath are vulnerable. Check the 7N60 power FETs to make sure they aren't shorted. I have a limited number of the 8 Pin management chip but I don't know the manufacturer's part number. I bought from someone in the US who knows it but wont say.

The smaller chip looks like a SOP8 memory chip. If this is the case, you would need to transfer the information stored in that chip to the new chip before it would work. Great video for someone looking to diagnose their Solo. In my experience with the Bose Solo soundbars, the failure always seems to be within the Bose firmware. Either a bad solder at the chip or the chip has taken a turn for the worse. Also, wasn't the last part you soldered onto the board a MOSFET? There is a great way to check these types of gates without having to remove them.

Firmware fails and no way to force into a loader without a serial JTAG programming interface. There is no startup checksum warning event though they could flash a LED warning sequence. re the DSP the start up sequence and timing of the power lines is crucial else teh logic can hang up and a hard resent wont make it start once the change has happened.

Thanks. I haven't seen that model. Do you happen to know if that often have issues? The obvious thing would be to open it up and check for shorts on all the power FETs you can find. 90% of the time on a failed FET will meter with all three connections will be shorted together.. If you do find a failed one then check the components in the gate drive circuit.

Hello MS! I watched with great interest all the videos on the Bose Solo, hoping to get some ideas on fixing mine, but no luck. My problem is the same as several others who commented here, namely, no beeps, no LED coming on, nothing. Power supply is definitely putting out 24VDC and linear regulators in DSP section are putting out 3 and 1.7VDC. There is no 5V on the USB port. I’ve also checked the remote and know it’s working and signal is getting to the processor. Clearly, without the start-up beeps unit is not ready to receive any input from the remote. Without a schematic, even though I’m an electrical engineer, I have no idea what to do. If you get one of these Solos, as there seem to be a lot of them failing the same way, I’d love to see a video on how you go about troubleshooting and repairing it. Thanks in advance.

Hello Magic Smoke, I watched your videos as a friend of mine asked me if I could try to repair his Bose Solo TV device... I was wondering if maybe you could help ! The device behaves like if it was totally dead (no light, no initial sound, nothing). The remote is working fine (sending infrared frames at least !). Inside the device, I performed a visual inspection and it looks fine as far as I can see, no leakage, nothing burnt or exploded. I checked the power supply part of the main board and the mains (230v AC) is entering it ok, reaching the bridge rectifier, then I get around 330v DC at the bridge output. However, I have absolutely nothing (O v) at the output of this power supply section (I understand from your videos that I should measure around 24v DC at any of the 6 capacitors filtering the ouput signal). I removed the STX616 NPN transistor and tested it with a little multi-function tester and it looks ok. Do you think it is still worth replacing it by a new one or shall I look elsewhere ? I even tried to inject 24v DC to bypass the power supply but, no better (though I see there is 1,8v and 3,3v available around the Texas chip). This Bose device is evil :-) It is driving me crazy as many other people as I can see in the video comments ! Thank you for your help and congratulations for your videos which are great 🙂 Rgds,

No problem. Do you have low-voltage DC power? If not you need to fix the switch-mode-power-supply. (SMPS) As far as I can recall the can cover is held on by spring details in the edge of the cover and can just be levered off.

Hi, just wondered if you ever came across a faulty Boss Cinemate 1 SR system. Mine died and I found out that this is a very common thing on these. It just stops responding to the remote, no lights blinking on the soundbar. I’m reading on Bose forums that the replacement units that people get or the “repaired” do not last long either. Several months to a year and back to the same issue. And it’s 160-180 dollars. So sending it out for an “official” repair is not an option. Thank you for any info on these. I’m in US, and very handy with this kind of stuff. Appreciate it

@@razenby yes, there is stable 24 volts on the output capacitors, however I can’t seem to get that voltage on the output connector. There is a red and black wire going to the amplifier board I guess, so there is nothing on there if I measure voltage. But when I plug in the unit to the mains, it will sometimes blink the white LED as if trying to power up, but that is it. No response to the remote.

If you get the beep beep then have a look at the remote control LED with you cellphone camera. Believe it or not the remotes often lock up too.
