DR #3 - BOSE Solo Sound System Troubleshooting

In this video, I document the initial troubleshooting of this unit. I'll look at the power supply, the infrared receiver, and the processing circuitry.

FIXED: After looking at this great video, I checked the voltage on the PS Capacitors, they were 24 Vdc, good. So I then looked under the emi can at all the micro chips for cold solder joints. I reflowed all the chip leads with a hot air gun. I then plugged in the power cord, and got the familiar 2 beeps, and the unit started working!!!

For me it did not work - the same symptoms after reflowing: no green light, no response to the verified working remote. I believe this type of Bose equipment is developed with planned obsolescence, so to die after the warranty period.

FIXED: I watched the entirety of this video and performed each check. Each check yielded a similar result. I was about to fold when I read several comments stating success with a heat gun directed at and around the microprocessor. After waiting for it to lose heat, the device powered as expected! Nevertheless, this video is excellent, methodical, and informative. Thank you!

This was an excellent display of expertise. Thanks for sharing it with us. I am having the same exact issue with mine, and have become beyond frustrated by the device. I'm beginning to see why you "dropped" it. Word to the wise and laymen alike as stated multiple times within this video those capacitors will hold on to hazardous voltage long after the power has been removed, leaving the inexperienced open to a hazardous shock. I wouldn't bother with trying to repair this device on your own if you're a newbie to electronics. Awesome video! Earned a like from me at least!

I don't know if this video will help me fix mine, but really appreciate the time that went into making it! My Solo was in mode with green light, but then wasn't playing when I started some audio, and it was responding to remote on off. So i unplugged, and replugged... But it won't turn on now. There is a hum from the power supply, and the remote works.

The video is already 3 years old but still valid. I found a simple, but somehow strange solution for this problem: I heated the processor compartment, after I had opened it, with a hair dryer on highest temperature setting and then the unit started to work again. The rest of the testing had given me the same results as here in the video. A question? Which one of the parts built in the processor unit is sensitive to temperature? The fault must be with that part, since with a bit of heat the malfunction can be fixed. Its a temporary fix only. The BOSO SOLO stops working once the unit cools down again. A really weird fault. But I have not given up hope that it can be fixed!

I have looked at one of these solo TV soundbard. Despite the excellent construction and components choice, the device is weak on its DSP, a TI D808K023CPTP4. The bar I looked at had its active-clamp flyback power supply in good conditions with 24 V across the output caps. No response from remote. When I heated up the chip with a hot-air gun while power was off (unplugged) and then re-plugged it, the bar did chime at power on and could play music. Turn it off and it's gone in mute mode again. I warmed the chip again and quickly following Bose site instructions, I could update the firmware. It works again but I'm sure it won't last long. Shame cos' this is a nice piece of electronics with good-quality components.

Iv got one here that when it’s plugged in nothing happens, no green light when the remote is pressed etc. Have tested the output from the IR sensor and it drops when the button is pressed. If I use hot air and warm up the area under the processor shield a bit (so it’s hot to touch, but nowhere near reflow temps) the unit then turns on when the power button is pressed on the remove and I get a green light, so presuming something under that shield is bad. Going to let it cool down and then try a bit more directed heat on each component and try the power each time until I find the component that needs heat to function and then try replacing.

Hello, I have just had one of these turn up at the Market Harborough Repair Cafe and have already done the same tests as you demonstrated so well, but similarly did not find a reason for the unit turning on the green LED and running. I will be bringing it home next week for a more detailed look. Did you get any further with the repair? If not I will report back if I have any success. Keep up the good work. Kind regards, Steve.

Mine works but stops from time to time and won't respond to anything. The front LED remains on. It has to be unplugged and rebooted, then it works again. Sometimes when it stops working a low level hum comes out of the speakers (not the mains frequency but quite a bit higher). As soon as you said "processor" I thought "that will be the problem". Nothing reduces the reliability of an electronic device like a microprocessor! So I doubt I'll be able to fix it.

The owner said it only turned on, didn't have remote. When I got it the unit was in good shape. I already had a soundbar remote and optical cable. Hooked it up, turned it on and it works great. I recently updated the software on it. Only issue is there a small gap in the speaker cover, dent feel like to wants to slip in place.

@@fabiobrasca619 bat54cw is just a diode which is not current dependent. The valve of the resistor is not that important. Check for open or short circuit to ground at the diode. Resistors are almost never the source of problems in a circuit. Capacitors, MoSFETS, and main logic IC's are prone to internal short circuit conditions in most cases. This is why I was very skeptical that replacing the crystal oscillator(s) would resolve the problem in this system. This board looks immaculate except for the main Processor IC, which by the manufacture's logo looks like it was made by Texas Instruments (tI) and shows signs of overheating. This audio system is basically a no fix, even for BOSE.

I have replaced the six capacitors of the power supply just to exclude it's not those. But it did not help. I've not been able to repair a faulty Bose solo sound system. The symptoms are the same; the device does not turn on, or it turns on and after a few days of use it dies again. After unplugging the power cord for a short time it comes back but does not keep working correctly. I will attempt to replace these two crystals on one faulty device, would be nice to know if this helps.

TO EVERYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM: First, "get a brand new battery for the remote". Then unplug the unit for at least a week, I actually had to go 2 weeks.............then plug the unit back in and wait for the tone. Now, after the tone "WAIT AT LEAST ONE MIN BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO POWER UP". You should get a green light now........................Why does this work??? I have no idea...............but its worked for me twice, since it wouldnt power up, even after the reflash and 5 min inplug. (Id still like to know if the crystal replacement worked or not)..............

I’m fixing my own Solo at the moment. My Bridge Rectifier blew. I’ve sourced its exact part thanks to a BOM I found, but without a schematic I cannot identify the SMD resistor next to BR1201 marked, “750” which is badly burned in my board. If you have the chance, could you scope it’s resistance? Pretty sure it’s 75 Ohm, [0603], 1/10W, 5%, but the package isn’t 603 so in just double checking
