Borders Episode 1: Guns, Drugs and People

Guns, drugs, people, vehicles and counterfeit merchandise. These are smuggled across South Africa's borders daily. But on the line, the military plays cat-and-mouse with criminal syndicates as they try and one-up the border patrols.

    Good job to SANDF,but I feel as though their efforts are in vain,the state must support the program,these guys need resources such as drones,quad bikes,infrared cameras,night visions,paper spray,Taser and more advanced equipment which are lighter and easy to carry etc.I am sure we can build a better border than just a standard fence.We can do better,government must come on board and fully support our security agencies and no expense must be spared.

    South Africa constantly has people running across the border and the country is on it’s knees. We keep giving warnings to those people to extents that some kill them yet they still come and try to destroy what we built up. It’s like building a huge Sandcastle and a bunch of 8 year olds come and jump on it.

    @Jonathan_Strange

    A border prison where South Africa can feed and shelter them for a couple of days? Nice. It is useless trying to add them to an offenders / border jumpers register, because they probably don't carry their documentation on them - so no way to identify them. If only there was some way to mark them? Maybe a brand or something? Then you know that if they get across next time and aren't caught - that no-one should hire/employ someone with that brand on them...? Just an idea... Then they will come to realise that they are scarred for life for doing something that is illegal. If we're going to hold them in detention (if we manage to catch them) - then they should probably be made to work on a chain gang or something, at least that way they can pay for their accommodation and the inconvenience caused (and the soldier's salary). Hell, after watching this... I'd also just ignore the army patrols... and just make sure I can outrun them... because I know now that they can't shoot at me. The probably can't even flick my ear or stand on my toe.... so why would I stop doing this. I haven't seen anything in this video to dissuade anyone from trying to jump the border illegally (case in point: 06:28). Even the Colonel says it's catch and release, so that they can try again the next day. There should be a strip of no man's land, which if you enter - you're at risk of being shot. Protect the borders. At least the army might have some success at curbing smuggling, but like other comments suggest.... if the price is right... I'm sure they look the other way.

    Military Rules of Engagement : South African law does NOT allow soldiers to shoot unarmed civilians, of course it would be a horrible thing to be a heavily armed solider and find yourself in a job where you have to shoot a poor woman WITH a child every single day and the woman/women you brutally shoot pose NO threat to you whatsoever, so it is OUT of the question to even have these soldiers so heavily-armed in the first place. Secondly, as the corporal explains, the only thing you can do with an illegal Mozambican trespasser is to take him/her back to the border gate, force her to cross the border BACK into her country/Mozambique, and in 3 to 4 hours YOU WILL see here again because she will obviously try to cross the border again because SHE WANTS to ENTER the country. So the solider patrol is NOT an effective solution because ultimately the soldier must go home or rest or knock off, so the trespassers eventually WILL WIN because they have a FAR more solid motivation to get INTO South Africa than the solider's motivation to STOP them :) I think SANDF should abandon this operation and focus their resources on other more worthwhile tasks such as solider training and development. There is REALLY no need for them to be involved in border patrol and spend the whole day/week in the heat doing such a senseless activity !

It's so sad on how we as South African's work hard to build a brighter future for ourselves then illegal foreign nationals just come take whatever that you have worked hard for, worse now that employment is extremely rife for South African citizens. We go to school, universities and colleges then illegal foreigners with or without permits come and snatch off our job's, be it through nepotism or cheap labor which is undocumented; above all poaching our animals, killing our citizens especially when being hi-jacked, house robbed and etc. Then our leadership keeps on drinking tea, have lunches with people who kill us as South African's. People who care-less about South Africa nor its future. ANC must fall... Enough is Enough, Orania leadership style must rule South Africa.

    Drones technology can go a long way. They are much cheaper. They can survey kilometre radii .

    south africa should use drones,its very affective.More unemployed youth should be trained and used to guard our borders.These guys are doing their best but its just not enough,i feel like the anc is not paying attention to our borders,they are not even mentioning it in paliarment.

    South Africa has a lot of unemployed young people. The only solution is to train much more of them because of the many borders SA have. Bring back electric fences and people will have respect and come the right way. Vehicles theft, drugs and other criminal activities will suffer. Our soldiers will not have to waste time on this cats and mouse chase and they can't even use rubber bullets or teargas, they are humans too .

    Right ? The other problem should the money to actually put in a better system comes in the government will steal it . We have the most evil people in positions of power making decisions for the majority. I mean putting up a wall and measures or rules in place to allow people to come in and out and be tracked isn't exactly rocket science . ..Plus if you look around there's so much work to help some people find a better life . AFRICA has enough people to do the work of machines or services that we get abroad . But these evil folks don't want that as they look out for self. That's the theme in Africa , and sadly we have ourselves to blame because it's all about self love , and evolving and moving on as people we cannot blame our oppressors forever. But we refuse to see the bigger picture . A lot of homes dont teach this.
