“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

I've been booth renting for 2 years and I have had to make the decision to move into my home. The business in my town just isn't there. There are too many salons in my small town so everyone is spread SO thin. I know of 5 nail Techs that were killing it before Covid that have had to quit because the people in our area are still working from home so they don't do those services any more. I have been just making enough to pay booth rent so I became #6. Tracey tells people all the time "you will fail" ... 🤨 . But at least the clients I do have said they wouldn't care if they have to come to my home..THANK GOODNESS!

I agree . I used to work from home and my clients always tell me that they rather come to my house. Who knows, when I move to boca I might go back to working from home. Will see. I like the booth rent because I get to leave the house but I kind of miss being home.

I recently opened a salon...I didn't want to, but the town I moved to, I couldn't find anywhere within 40 minutes of me that would be okay with acrylic in their space. It is a WHOLE different world from booth rental. I had to work at my home for about a month before opening and that was AWFUL. I am not the person to have people in my home in that way. I definitely see how different situations would work for different people though.

Well in school they said you can’t work from home UNLESS, you have a separate bed room or room for nails. Also you need a business license and liability and other insurance. Etc . I’m in NYC. Booth rent you still have to get a business license if you booth rent.

I'm from Australia and home salons are so common, most of the nail techs work from home if it's not one of those walk in ones that don't follow any kind of hygiene etc (we don't need a license here) also the majority of hair dressers that are really good also work from home. So definitely depends on where you are located.

Most salons want you to have experience. I really didn't get much experience in school. I was thinking about working from home so I can get faster and then be able to go to a salon and charge well. What do you think?

If you prefer to work out of your home, that is an option. Just make sure you get the proper licensing required by your state/city to be able to work out of the home legally. There are salons that hire techs with minimal experience and provide training. Sometimes these salons require you to be there for a certain amount of time if they are investing in your training, but it can be very advantageous to both you and the salon. You may just have to check out a few salons in your area. Also check with the school you went to. A lot of times the school will have a placement counselor who works with local salons to assist graduates in finding jobs.

I recommend getting some experience first before going out on your own, and if you do decide taking clients at your home you must have boundaries and by appointment only, NO EXTRA GUEST, no waiting at your parking space until you’re done none of that, cameras for your safety and your family.

You would have to determine what's best for you and your business. If you own a rental salon, you would collect the rent from the techs, take care of the property and they would basically run their own business. If you run a commission business, you would have employees you are responsible for.

Check with schools in your area to see if there are any loans/grants you can get. You may also check with local salons/beauty industry companies/supply stores to see if any of them give out scholarships. You might also be able to negotiate an arrangement with a salon you are interested in working at. They may be willing to help you with your tuition/expenses if you sign a contract to work there for a certain amount of time. There are lots of ways to get funding for school, you just have to start researching options in your area. Maybe try doing a quick google search for cosmetology/nail tech scholarships or grants. There are also several professional beauty associations that offer scholarships.
