In this “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) episode, Peter dives deep into the topic of bone health and explains why this is an important topic for everyone, from children to the elderly. He begins with an overview of bone mineral density, how it's measured, how it changes over the course of life, and the variability between sexes largely due to changes in estrogen levels. From there he provides insights into ways that one can improve bone health, from exercise to nutrition supplements to drugs. Additionally, Peter discusses what happens when one may be forced to be sedentary (e.g., bedrest) and how you can work to minimize the damage during these periods.
In this sneak peek, we discuss:
00:00 - intro
00:08 - Overview of bone health topics to be discussed
04:15 - Bones 101: bone function, structure, and more
08:26 - Bone mineral density (BMD), minerals in bone, role of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and more
In the full episode, we also discuss:
-The consequences of poor bone health;
-The devastating nature of hip fractures: morbidity and mortality data
-Where fractures tend to occur in the body;
-Defining osteopenia and osteoporosis;
-Measuring BMD with DEXA and how to interpret scores;

-How BMD changes throughout the life and how it differs between men and women;
-How changes in estrogen levels (e.g., menopause) impacts bone health;
-Why HRT is not considered a standard of care for postmenopausal bone loss;
-Factors determining who may be at higher risk of poor bone health;
-Common drugs that can negatively impact BMD;
-How children can optimize bone health and lay the foundation for the future;
-Types of physical activity that can positively impact bone health;
-How weight loss can negatively impact bone health and how exercise can counteract those effects;
-Nutrition and supplements for bone health;

    I'm a regular listener, and generally quite fond of the channel. That's said: seriously, talking about bone health, calcium and vitamin D, but no word about vitamin K2 and its role in directing the Ca to the bones? Without sufficient vitamin K2, the protein osteocalcin, expressed in the osteoblasts, is insufficient carboxyleted and unable to hold the Ca in the bone. Worse, the matrix Gla protein is unable to move the Ca away from the soft tissue. So K2 is essential if you want to calcify your bones and not the arteries or kidneys. High vitamin D levels deplete the K2 levels. Therfore there is nearly no vitamin D3 supplement which is not combined with K2, as it should be. And, imho, vitamin D3 or colecalciferol is not the active hormon. 1,25-(OH)2- D3 or calcitriol, after vit D3 being metabolized in 2 steps by the liver and the kidneys is it. Please correct me if I am wrong ...

    With avacados, I buy a half dozen or more and peel them when they're ripe, mash them up, mix in stevia powder as a sweetener, then scoop them up into one size serving containers and put them in the freezer. It works great!
