It's possible that Erica is just so horrifyingly disfigured that she keeps away from children to avoid traumatising them. They do suggest that she has lost a tooth, a foot, had extra vestigial ears, been burnt beyond recognition and needed split brain surgery at various points in the past.

Erika's back story could be nothing more than an animal who is a victim of animal testing facilities. From the mutations and burns, losing a limb and down to having a misscarrige cause of the results of the animal testing. At some point maybe the products made her beautiful and charming but it would have negative affects on her latter.

I love that last one as someone who has a dear family memeber who lost an ear to cancer. When you love someone, you love everything about them. And to me thats what Erica represents.

Can't explain, but there's something sweet about Bojack mentioning Erica as well, not just Mr. Peanutbutter.

Erica is a doctor who works in a burn ward & takes skin grafts from cadaver parts like feet and ears. Her extra and lacking parts are not on her body, they are the medical supplies she needs for her patients. Same as the tooth. As for the not around children, she lost a child patient and is struck with grief when she's around children.

I think it's a play on words, from the expression "always a bridesmaid, never a bride", which foreshadow Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane's marriage, while Bojack falling in love with her. That being said, I don't know why he didn't just say that expression, I don't get the whole "Clyde" thing either...

chevaliersemeraude is right, but "clydesdale" is a breed of draught horse! bojack's dad was a draught horse, so maybe that's the reason for it, beyond just being a horse pun? i'm not sure about it being shortened to "clyde" but i'm just gonna assume it's because clyde rhymes with bride and mr. peanutbutter really doesn't make much sense sometimes.

Troll ending theory. Some really dark stuff is going to happen in the final episodes and their going to continue to build up that one of the five main characters will die. There will be a dramatic scene in the final leaving us to believe either Bojack, Diane or even Mr. Peanutbutter has died. Then they cut to a funeral scene with an image of a closed casket......the sad Silence is broken by Peanutbutter crying "Oh Erica! Wwwhy!!" Then we see all the other charaters attending. Todd is like "aaaa....Who?" And bojack explaines who she was while getting on his case for not knowing Erica "I mean Peanutbutter was with her all the time!"

My theory: Erika was first a felon, which is probably related to her not being able to be near children (So, likely, sex offender) Erika suffered an accident (that might have involved fire and blunt trauma) in which she lost her foot but gained a friend. She might have lost an eye, too, leading her to use a fake eye that gets stuck looking at the stars. There might have been more than one accident, one before she met Peanutbutter, and one during the series right before "Who let you out of the burn ward?" The tooth and ear references might have to do with reconstructive surgery, which she would have had to undergo if she lost a significant part of her face ("Get out of here with that face!")
