Body Bag Stealth Camping In Freeway Interchange

I managed to get out stealth camping this week in a reasonably priced body bag from Amazon. I chose to camp in a freeway interchange in the city. It was freezing cold when I woke up in the morning and the body bag did create a lot of condensation. Overall, I would not recommend camping in a body bag without some modifications for ventilation. It would work fantastic for carrying gear though!

You can learn a lot about stealth camping by what fails. I have an example. A young homeless couple had a camp in the power company wooded right of way in my subdivision. It was close the the community center so they had access to fresh water from the outside hose spigots. In addition there was a laundry room open 24/7 so the could, and did, wash clothes. But one day the police were called and rousted them out. So what went wrong? Before what they did to bring attention the failure at their camp site. They had a yellow tent in the woods in a large clear space under the tree cover. The mistake here was they positioned the tent near the edge where it could be seen by anyone walking in the right of way. The police were called because they got over confidant and brazen in their activities. The community building had security cameras and at night they were hopping the fence to swim in the pool. That alerted management that someone that did not look like they were part of a 55+ community were on the grounds. The final act was they were not content to carry water back to their camp area to wash themselves. So they found a weak point in the lock for the outside entrance to the ladies room. A resident lady walking by tried to use the toilet and found the naked man washing himself in a sink. She ran off and called management. I was walking by and saw a young man on a bicycle peddling like demons were after him ride off to the right of way. Well the community manager and two employees showed up. We found some wet clothes in the laundry room. Walking the right of way with a flashlight saw he had parked his bike at the edge of the woods making the tent really stand out. It was an ideal camp spot and they could have stayed there for many months. The lesson is do not make your presence apparent, leave no trace and do not get over confident.

Your story you told about getting scared reminded me of mine. I went camping in a park with some friends on Halloween night of this year. We were about a 3 mile hike from the parking lot to the site. We had been there most of the day but around 1030pm my friend needed to go back to the car to get something he had forgotten so I went with him. As of 1030 we were the only cars in the parking lot. This was also the only parking lot that had access to the trails as the park is on a peninsula created by a river much to deep to just cross. It had been raining a lot the days prior and the trail was flooded in some sections and was nothing but mud which made it hard to traverse. We get back and all is well. We are having our step 2's as we watch the fire burn and before you know it it is time to turn in. I wake up the next morning and get up to see one of my friends by the fire. I go over and I am talking with him and he asks if I heard the voices and foot steps around the tents last night at approximately 230am. I'm alarmed but I assure him someone probably just got up to pee. He wasn't so sure and said he heard someone say "Oh so this is where they're at" A half an hour passes and my friend in the third tent awakes and comes and asks us if we heard the voices. Now I'm shitting myself. We go around and ask the group if anyone got up last night but everyone reported staying in their tent throughout the entire night. Nothing was amiss from our site and it's hard to determine if the foot prints around the tents were from us setting them up or someone snooping around in the dark. Eventually we pack up and all head our separate ways but I can't shake the thought of someone creeping around our camp while we were all sleeping. I ended up calling the park ranger's dispatch station to ask if there was any chance a ranger was out patrolling and checking in on us to make sure we were safe or were permitted to be at that camp site. The dispatcher informed me that the rangers stop patrolling at around 10pm and the last time a ranger was reported to be at that park was 945pm. I told her what had happened and her tone quickly changed and she took my information because she wanted me to file a report with a ranger. A few minutes go by and I received a call from a park ranger. I give him all my info and tell him the story. He told me that we were the only ones who were registered to be camping there that night but he did not want me to worry. I get the impression that this isn't the first time they've received a report similar to mine at this park. In the end nothing bad ever came of this but still I can't help but feel like we were being stalked that night.

Way too much car noise for me to rest comfortably! But I do like the idea behind the stealth camping. I'm just going to do it in the woods. Away from everybody and where it's quiet.

Was trying to figure out what is so comforting about Steve’s videos. I think it’s that no matter the inclement conditions (be they weather or people), he is always calm as he goes through the familiar pattern of setup, step 2, meal, and bedtime (with some variation). He brings order where there is chaos, and inspires a sense of ease in his viewers, assuming I’m not the only one. The Mr Rogers of camping

I think what is comforting is that he is just an average joe like any of us and we can relate good with him in a sense that the average camper is not an expert. This episode remind me of when me and my brother went camping to the lake when we were teenagers, it was a perfect 70 Degree evening when we set up the tent .The weather drop 40 degrees there was front all inside the tent. We coudlt sleep it was so cold we didnt take approtiate gear for that weather and we bailed out at like 4 am freezing our asses off😂 back home

I for one don't need a lot of "drama" ( e.g. dodging security personnel, police, etc.) on your stealth camping videos, Steve. I am interested in seeing where you choose to camp, the equipment you're using and hearing what you have to say. I also enjoy seeing what you're having for supper! So, I may be in the minority of your viewers but I like to see you relaxed and not seriously worried about being caught. Cheers, my friend!

23:00 Everyone is a sceptic until they start getting smacks on their walls. I had an experience like that when I was younger. It was in Ontario at a cabin that my family had been visiting for about 20 years. Nothing crazy ever happened until one night. My friend and I were on the first floor of the cabin with our room right up against the woods. Around midnight we started to hear something outside our windows. It was trying to open the door to the woodshed that led into the kitchen, our room just happened to be looking at the door. It was so dark we couldn't see anything. Whatever it was started to get frustrated, and it began kicking the door harder and harder. It made scratching sound on the door, like fingernails on wood. Not claws. Being dumb kids, we growled back at it and started smacking the wall. Very dumb move. This thing started smacking the wall of our room. At first, we laughed but then the fear hit us. Wherever we moved in the room it would smack the wall next to us. Whatever it was it then decided to smack our window. All we saw was a massive hairy arm before both of us took literal flight and bolted out of the room. The thing then started body slamming into the woodshed door. We ran up the stairs to where my stepsister and her friend were staying. They were still awake, and we told them what was happening. We all sat at the top of the stairs listening to this thing bashing the cabin. It was grunting and snarling. My friend and I refused to sleep downstairs, so we slept on the floor of their room. The next day we got up the courage to investigate the door and see what the claw marks looked like, except there was no claw marks. We'd never heard of bigfoot before, so we didn't look for footprints in the area. We stopped going into those woods after that, even during the day. Whatever it was, was at least as tall as a human because the smacking was above our heads.

And he says he heard it twice, once during watching shows, that would give time to heat up and pop, then he went outside which would have cooled down the inside and move the metal back, he then proceeded to stoke the fire to make it big again so once he got back inside it would have heated up and popped a 2nd time. The fact it was a single noise and not a 'knock' so to speak, lays credibility to it i think. Occam's Razor

I have to say Steve is not the first person I've seen body bag camping. Yep, I do it too. Although I don't zip myself into it. I started out just looking for a cheaper alternative to an Aussie swag bag or cowboy bedroll, both of which are expensive, body bags are cheap. At home I place my ground pad, 2 wool blankets, pillow, tarp and spare clothes in the bag, zip it up then roll from the end. Secure the roll with 2 straps around the roll and add a shoulder strap. When you reach camp you just remove the straps and let it unroll, unzip the bag and your ready. In the morning straighten the blankets, zip it up and roll, ready to go. But again, don't zip yourself in to avoid the condensation problem, hang a tarp over you if it looks like rain. Makes a great ground cloth to keep your gear off the ground too.

Spooky story. Reminds me of my own experience when my brother and I, after landing in Australia back in 97 bought a kombi van with the intention of exploring the outback. On our first night in the bush we pulled off road and got ready to sleep when after about half an hour or so we heard someone banging loudly on the side of the van. Needless to say we were bolt upright in our sleeping bags. We sat there for a few minutes in silent fear when came 3 more loud bangs on the side of the van. I felt the blood drain from my face. We had these curtains on the windows so we couldn’t see anything outside and there was no way on earth I was going to snap back the curtains only to be greeted with an aboriginal tribal face starring back at me. My brother cowering under his sleeping bag suggested I climb into the driving seat and get the hell out of there. He promised that he’d be right behind me. I climbed into the driving seat and started the van not daring to look left or right for fear of seeing something that might haunt me forever, but looking in the rear view mirror I noticed my brother still cowering in his bag. I put my foot down and kicking up dust rejoined the highway. We drove all night along the remote Northern Territory highway until morning. The following night we found a suitable spot to camp, a very remote site were we would be safe. Just as we were getting to sleep, someone started banging on the side of the van again! We came to the conclusion that it must have been the fuel tank or panelling contracting from the heat of the day. It happened every night for 3 months and after the first few nights we just slept through it, reminiscent of that scene in the film castaway. I would think that your large camp fire would have heated the panelling on your RV with the resulting bang due to cooling. Hope I haven’t spoilt your story. 🙂

Steve, they now make mirrored fold out hunting covers, the cover folds out and leans slightly forward so it reflects the ground and foliage around you, that makes you appear almost invisible, if you can get your hands on any of them, I would like to see how well they do for your type of stealth camping.
