I start my family vacation with my wife Gwen and nine month old daughter Abby in Cross Lake. It's a rainy day, but that doesn't stop our fishing efforts using bobbers off the back of the boat. We also give a demonstration of our recipe for cooking bass. I have a hard time watching without getting hungry for some nice fried bass!

Relaxing rainy day fishing with my family and one of my favorite bass frying recipes.

Good stuff, Mike! Great family vacation spot and beautiful scenery. I've had real good luck with those weighted pencil-type bobbers. They have a lot of visibility, enhance casting distance, and the fish don't feel as much resistance when they pull it down. When I win the lottery I'm going houseboat fishing at Temagami! Thumbs up. Yep, usually by the end of December. Saw the first truck on the ice this weekend in our bay. It's been a slow freeze and we got snow right when the ice came, so vehicle traffic has been delayed. This week it'll be very cold and might allow things to be opened up to vehicles further up the lake if it is still closed to heavier traffic. The 15cm of snow we just got won't help though... Likely going to have some slush to deal with. I'll be looking for those floats next trip to tackle shop.

Mike, They would work the same. The 'pencil' floats simply have a slimmer profile, are normally made of foam, and come in a variety of sizes. The most common colors are flourescent orange and yellow, which is a bonus on days with limited visibility. The ones I've been using lately for crappie jigs have a small lead weight built into the design (wraps around the bottom of the float) that allows you to cast light jigs farther. Does Temagami freeze over this time of year? Don

I like to try and cook my fish as fast as I can, so I get my oil pretty hot. Of course you don't want it smokin' hot... :) But a nice high flame (depending on stove), watching the oil for signs that it is getting too hot. Get your oil hot, put in the fish, and watch the oil when you remove done fish and get ready for more, because without the fish in there cooking, your oil will heat up quickly. The key is having the next set of fillets ready to go in when you take the done ones out.

I like to cook my fillets until they are a nice crispy brown. I know some people that cook them at lower heat settings and it just doesn't get nice and crisp. It's all according to taste. I use a flour-type coating and it seems to require high heat to crisp - a thicker coating like the egg and bread crumb coating I used to use would crisp up with a little less heat. Check that the fish flakes and the meat is cooked through the first few times until you get the hang of it.

Most of the cutting of video is done in Adobe Premiere, while the intro and some effects are done in Adobe After Effects.

Thanks Don! I've liked the small bobbers her so far and only use the lower clip for line so they will travel down the line as I reel in if needed. How do the pencil bobbers work for that?

One reason you were missing lots of fish was because y'all were waiting to long to set it. The fish will run for a short periodic time then once they feel the hook they spit. Seemed to be that you or your wife was waiting a little to long. Good luck and good fishin
