Looks nice! It seems like an easy build using treated or better, cedar 2x4’s and 1/2” rebar and especially using heavy duty corner brackets cause that’s where the “give” will be. Homemade is always better and sometimes way cheaper imo. 👍🏼 UPDATE: so what I wound up doing was buying a metal 4’ cattle gate and mounted a 4” wheel on each end with wooden guide on one end and a magnet mounted on the house to keep it shut.

Hey! Thanks for posting this! Question though: could you have attached your rollers to the railing and then have the gate slide through them? Does that question make sense? Do you think it would work? Because I too have a top board. I’d like to know what you think before I purchase this expensive kit.

Hey Brooke, I just took a look at my gate to see if your idea will work. I think you may be able to finagle it so all the rollers are attached to the deck rail however it would require some modification to them because their sizes aren't designed for that configuration. Also I think the gate would lose some of its stability. If you took off your top rail and put 3/4in spaces in you can still use the rollers as they're designed. Let me know how it goes :) Take Care

I drilled some pilot holes in it first so they don't crack. Then just some deck screws Take care :)

could you have eliminated the "gate" roller on the top of the gate? I'm thinking it is only there to align the gate. It would have eliminated your "gap" on top and you would not need the 2x6. just wondering because I have a similar issue. Your three points of contact be enough?

Hey Shawn, I thought about doing this when I built it and then decided that the 2x6 cap isn't going to look too bad. That being said, after reading your comment, I took a look at the gate this morning to see what would happen if I removed the top roller. I think the gate would still function. One drawback I can see is when the gate is completely open it loses some stability at the top. I don't think it would fall but it may come away from the deck railing and not look as flush. Another issue I can see is when the gate is completely closed it again loses some stability at the top and if the gate were to bed pushed (from the inside towards the outside) it may swing in a little at the top. I think you could probably get away with removing it but if you have kids that will climb on it or a large dog who could jump on it, you might want to keep that top roller in your design. Please let us know how this product has held up? (It doesn't seem to be galvanized from online info, just powder painted) My area is very damp, so I'm trying to find a galvanized type, no luck so far. Also, the MFR site Pylex, has an installation video now. Thanks

Hey John, It's held up pretty well. There is definitely some rust happening on the screws and a few other spots but I think it's easy enough to paint. My main concern is the wheels. We get quite a bit of snow here so they are wet a lot of the time. They squeek and there's rust around the bearings. My main worry is where the heck am I going to find replacements when these give out...? Otherwise the family love the gate. It easy for the kids to open, keeps the dog at bay and is nice and wide. Excellent video Bob! Do you how much larger the gate had to be than the open space so that it could be securely attached to the fence? The installation guide says to add 18". Is that what you did? Thanks!

Hey Bryce, I know it says 18in but I wanted it as short as possible. 13in was the minimum because the steel corner brackets (that hold the wood together) block the ability to mount the gate gliding guides any shorter than 13in. When the gate is closed the 13in overlap means that gate mounted guides and deck rail mounted guides are touching when the gate is closed. I hope this makes sense. Let me know Take Care :)

Is there a different way to install that guide bracket so you won't need that gap between the top cap and the 2 x 4?

Hey Glenn, I looked at a few different ways and this was the only way I could fit it in my application. Potentially you could build upper and lower guide rails that attach to your deck railing. This would bring the gate out a few inches from the railing but you wouldn't need the gap at the top because you'd be using the separate guild rails. Let me know if you find another way Take care :)

Hey Scott, The railing wasn't a kit. I bought the pre-drilled railing wood and black aluminum balusters at Home Depot. The gate kit only comes with the hardware and you use the pre-drilled wood and black balusters with it. Hope that helps Take Care

How do the gates hold up in the winter is sliding a problem?

Hey Catherine, It's held up quite well throughout a few winters. The wheels still work well. If there's a lot of snow it will restrict it's ability to slide easily so you'll have to clear a bit of snow where the wheels slide. I do notice a bit of rust on it. It could easily be painted. Take care :)

Hey @40redfox40, The gate is holding up well. The screws have definitely rusted and there's some rust at the pin that holds the wheels but otherwise it's completely functional. I feel like over time the rust will cause the wheels to come off however this can easily be repaired with a bolt to replace the pin. The rest of the frame has no rust :) Hope this help Take care

Hey Mountainbobcat, There is hardware included in the kit that will allow it to lock. I can't say for sure it's "approved". Maybe give you're building code department a call to get more info. You could even refer them to this video ;)) Take Care

The gate must comply with min. 4" O.C. Spindles placement and latch at 60 inches off ground, of a 5 or 6 ft high fence. CA code
