why did you use 4x4 for the ends? did you attach it brackets? how is the weight? I am asking because I want to make a gate with horizontal cable to match the railing and I am considering using 4x4s like you did. thanks
I build a gate for my deck with 2x4’s and that was pretty heavy. I can’t imagine making it with 4x4’s.

It's not too bad actually.

A 45x36" gate that I made weighed 47 pounds while the wood was still wet. Once it dries it'll be a bit lighter.

I agree, since the weight, and bulkiness of the 4x4. I would think you would use a half lap joint with the rails. How has this held up over the last two years?

It's holding up well👍👍

Thanks fro the video! I am replacing a gate on our deck that has begun to sag significantly. Would using 2x4s rather than 4x4s be practical to keep the weight down?

You're very welcome! You can certainly give it a shot. Even with the 4x4s the gate isn't super heavy.

I was thinking the same thing
What was the width of the plywood piece you had under the 2x4s when screwing to the 4x4s?
Now there's a gate that will stand a little abuse. 4x4's on the side and 2x4's top and bottom would make it less likely to warp, especially with green lumber you always have to buy.....

You got that right! It's a hefty gate for sure and is holding up great👍👊
Keep it simple! You did!, No cross brace?. Clean production! Cheers

Thanks Bill! Didn't need a cross brace for one this size 👍🏻
I'm looking at a rather wide opening for my porch. The gate looks great, but how do you determine the hinges you'd use to hang a wide gate of this size and weight?

Thanks, glad you like the gate! I just got the heavy duty outdoor hinges from Home Depot and they've done a great job!
Loved your video! How do you put a cap on top of posts that hold up railing when railing and posts are flush? A friend told me I could do that and could leave that wood as is, seeing that it's redwood. I need your help! Thank you!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😃 I'm not sure how to do that because caps usually sit on top of a post. My only thought would be to screw a short section of a 4x4 where you want the caps and then set the caps in place that way... Maybe I'm not picturing what you're wanting to do quite right though. Hope that helps!
how much space ahould you leave on each side of the gate so it can open and close with no problems ? 1/2 smaller than total opening or more ?

1/2" is great.
What is it’s weight? Looks heavy. Thanks for the video

Hi Michael, Glad you like the video! It's not too bad, maybe 25lb at the most. Regards, Mike

What hardware did you use to hang that gate?

I used the heavy duty gate hinges from Home Depot.

I highly doubt you're still watching this comment section but is there any concerns about sagging in this scenario?
@WoodshopMike
Жыл бұрын
Hi John, No concerns about the gate sagging 👍
Too heavy - why not mitre cut 2x4 cedar for the frame, mount the 2 x 2 spars inside by counter sinking and screwing them through the 4" frame. Hide the countersink holes with a thin trim (top rail only - the bottom cannoy be seen). Half the weight of that monster.
@WoodshopMike

That would certainly be a good approach. Client wanted this aesthetic to match her fencing even though it would be heavy. That was a few years ago now and it's still holding up well. Cedar is great, but it's much more expensive, so since this was a budget job it's just wasn't in the cards. Cheers! Mike
