I didn't care much for the album at first few listenes, but it grew on me quickly. My first Dylan concert was the before the flood tour.

One of my favourites albums of Dylan. Very underrated, Something there is about you is one of Bob's best songs in my opinion. Greetings from Spain!

Interesting discussion as a relative newcomer to Dylan outside the big 60s albums. Tickled to see it shares a 50th birthday with Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark!

Jerry Garcia did Tough Mama and Forever Young. He did a great job with many of Bob’s songs

I wanted to address the insert. So my copy , there is a gold sheet that detaches from the cover which is white with the song titles, personal, and notes about the album. Mine is a U.S. copy. The gold sheet has fingerprints on it , which seems to be intentional. Thank you for the videos over the years John. I have enjoyed them.

I am very aware of all of Dylan's catalog, and I certainly believe "Dirge" is one of his most overlooked songs...Thank you again for taking the road less traveled...Peace and Love, Terry and Julia Tutor

I am fond of this LP I have a copy on Island record label! Recall it was recorded in a rush prior to tour! Think the tour may have started before it was out ! Like the last track wedding song

I think when Dylan plays with the band on Planet Waves it sounds more spontaneous and earthy. I love the song 'Tough Mama' - the lyrics are quite fun and the tune reflects that. I think Dylan also sounds happy (which is fairly rare) on this record. 'Something There Is About You' reminds me of 'If Not For You.' 'Never Say Goodbye' is quite good - very straight forward. You can hear the pick slap the strings on 'Wedding Song' or maybe the pick is slapping the pick guard. It almost sounds like an acoustic outtake, very raw (I love you more than blood). Overall, I think there are enthusiastic love songs written in a way only Dylan can that appear on this record. I'm putting it in my car (maybe along with New Morning). Thanks for inspiring me to do that John. As an aside, Jerry Garcia's Bob Dylan catalog include the songs 'Tough Mama,' 'Going Going Gone,' and 'Forever Young.' Jerry certainly had a reverence for Bob Dylan. And thanks for giving Jeff (CalicoSilver) a shout out!!!! He's great - highly musical and intellectual and finds new things to talk about regarding Bob Dylan all the time. Sheer brilliance for sure!

Jerry Garcia (without the Grateful Dead) covers three songs from this album to tremendous effect: Forever Young, Going Going Gone (acoustically and electrically), and Tough Mama.

Street legal is favourite of mine,I seem to remember that it was released when UK punk was appearing a changing of the guard as he put it and the British media were all for it. planet Waves was a relief for me as I bought all the previous albums on release but I didn't rate the last 3 or 4 albums very highly and there were only a couple of songs on them that I thought were OK. planet waves had the rock sound back and alongside it expressed deeper feelings than those previous albums

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE… this album…!!! I always think of this period of Dylan’s music as a trilogy…. Planet Waves… recorded WITH… The Band… great songs… it had a masterpiece… in “ Forever Young “… but I love everything on this album… which led into the tour with… The Band… for the live….” Down In The Flood “… album… the first LIVE… Dylan appearance in years… followed by another masterpiece… the next album of original music… “ Blood On The Tracks “… with heart wrenching songs about divorce and separation… I wore out two copies of this album… Bob’s soul… out and exposed… putting his emotions on vinyl. BOTT…& Born To Run… were released within months of each other… and in that time frame… between the two… my head and heart was spinning… I’ve always loved the rawness of Blood On The Tracks “… recorded in about 9-11 days… mistakes and all… and it was Dylan and…. The Band… together!!! So underrated… give it another listen… historically important… in Dylan’s catalog of music… 5 STARS ⭐️!!! Thanks to Bob and… The Band…🙌👏🙌 I Love This Album!!! 🌜🌞🌛

Hi there, John. Great video as always. I have just revisited the album and I didn't remember it to be that good. First of all, the Band are in stellar form on this album. The musicianship is fantastic throughout the whole record. And when it comes to the songs it has, in my opinion, some of Dylan's classics on it: Going, Going Gone, Hazel, Forever Young, Dirge, Wedding Song...I mean, how great are these? :) But deep cuts like Tough Mama or even You Angel You I also absolutely like. A wonderful album!

Planet Waves is truly an overlooked album in Dylan's catalog. Thank you for spotlighting it. I want to come to Louie Kemp's defense. Louie's girlfriend made the comment to Bob about Forever Young. When Bob asked Louie about it, Louie told him it was one of the best songs he had ever written. This exchange is all in Louie's book, which I highly recommend.

Remember having a cassette of this when it came out. Felt disappointed overall; summed up by "Dirge"! There is one track that I really liked; it was "Hazel".

Thanks for the review! I wish there could be more studio albums with Bob and the Band. I don't know which Uncut magazine you are referring to, but I have "The ultimate music guide Bob Dylan & The Band" from 2018 and I've read that magazine so many times. Now we only have Garth and Bob still going. 😢

I love this album, no complaints other than having 1 song on it twice (like Harrison did with 'Isn't It a Pity'). 'On a Night Like This' was good enough to make it onto the "Biograph" compilation.

The Last Waltz version of "Forever Young" illustrates what's missing from the studio recording: a strong Robbie Robertson guitar solo. It is odd that a live album would include no songs from the then-current studio album. CSNY do something similar by including just two songs from Deja Vu on the ensuing live album: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_Way_Street#Track_listing (though they also include the non-album single "Ohio" and its B-side "Find The Cost Of Freedom"). As for "Hazel," in 1994 Dylan performed a great version during his MTV Unplugged rehearsals: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGyX0MZmnM64Zpc.html

This record never gets any attention in the VC John. The Band gives outstanding backing. That’s the original inner, bought the album when first released in Canada. Very listenable album for the uninitiated. Cheers.

I really like this album. I agree that The Band contribute a big part of what makes it great. For some reason, I have always really liked, Never Say Goodbye, although I can see why some people would consider it to be an unfinished song. I always thought Dirge a little out of place here. To me it sounds like a precursor to Idiot Wind in terms of bitterness. The fast version of Forever Young seems a bit pointless to me and I think it’s a shame they didn’t finish Nobody Cept You you properly and put it on there.

My things all things dylan started with planet waves in the 90's. Along with street legal and greatest hits 3. Dylan nearly left Every grain of sand of shot of love also. Cause a roadies girlfriend calling it sentimental. From all reports Dylan's marraige to Sara finally shattered when Bob went out on the road with the band. Dylan may had some e flings with woman on the road.
