BOATLIFE: DIVING the Hull, DINGHY Excursions & DESSERT on the Grill! [NORDHAVN 43]

Happy Sunday and Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful Dad's out there!
Living on a boat makes every day a great day. And sometimes living ON a boat means you have to do a few things UNDER the boat to keep things in solid working order.
In today's video, we not only take the dinghy to our new favorite island getaway in the San Juan Islands (a.k.a Duck Island), but Shawn dives the hull of Freedom to scrub the props, prop shafts, stabilizer cooler and keel cooler to help keep the barnacles at bay. After all, we don't need to be cruising any slower because of barnacles overtaking the boat!
And for the icing on the cake, we finally get to those s'mores on the grill we've been craving. Our Solaire grill is not only perfect for grilling meats and veggies, but we recently learned it makes a mean s'more, too!
Enjoy!

Glad you liked Patos (pay-tows). Anchoring is fine there during good weather if you stern tie near the old dock ruins. If you like Patos, you'll really like Cabbage and Tumbo Islands a couple miles to the west. It has about 15 buoys plus good anchoring. Cabbage is a Nexus check-in site so if you have the pass (which includes Global Entry), you won't have to go to Poets Cove for Canada entry, or run to Friday Harbor or Roche to check back into the US.

Notice when you brush the barnacles you push yourself away from the boat? Highly recommend the sea-dog handle. Has suction cup on each end of handle to hold it to boat. Now you can clean with one hand and hold your place with the other. I used them for years. You should be able to find on Amazon or at a West Marine store. I tied a cord to handle and looped cord around arm to avoid dropping when Moving the handle.

Hi from NZ Shawn. Just watching your video and saw the tangled up Huka? pipe and comments of frustration. This maybe a dumb idea but have you considered loading it onto a suitable retractable reel ie, a spring loaded oil dispensing reel. With this you could mount to boat and pull out and alternately retract what you need at any given time - just a thought. Anyway like your channel and all the best.

Are you aware of the (almost) 'Pig War' between the American and British forces in the mid-1800's? It was all about the definition of the border through the Gulf Islands. There were two camps of occupation on San Juan Island, with the British and American camps at either end. It's an interesting story, and there are historical markers there. It would be interesting to see something about them from the ground. Maybe on one of your next visits? I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Regards from Ottawa, CANADA.

Looking at your depth sounder, it appears that most of it is a protective fairing, which you can paint. In fact I painted our depth sounder transducers as the boats at the museum sat a lot in very fertile waters (English Bay) and barnacles/mussels grew quickly. The paint might have a ever so slight effect on the transducer, but the barnacles and mussels are worse. You might want to try it. On your way to the shipyard. check out a nearby feature on your sounder, video it and then paint the transducer. then on your way out, check out the same feature and compare the data return. Worse comes to worse you need to dive and scrape it.

Ahoy, Freedom... Okay... this vlog started out alright... 00:19 ~ I had NO idea that's what they were for, maybe I should get one... then again, nah... LoL 10:19 ~ Soooooo nice and patient. 👍🙂 Question: Why do you not antifoul (and/or propspeed) the other parts such as prop and other things (I can see maybe not the coolers if it would affect their performance) on the hull? Like I said, the vlog started out just fine... but THEN I got to 17:47 and decided I had SEEN ENOUGH! Time to finally click the subscribe button. ✅ Anyone with an idea like that, worth it. Plus I was going to at this point anyhow. 😉 Thanks for sharing this with the world (and me). I really enjoy both the info and watching the adventures. 👍👍

PS ~ All this time watching KZread and I JUST discovered that clicking on the time someone puts in a comment takes you back up to the video and right to that spot! Brilliant (or I'm easily impressed, or both, ha)!!! I always saw it was blue and hyper linked to something, I guess I just never clicked it or thought it was smart enough to do exactly that instead of take me out of the video to something else, hahaha... Now I've learned two things today to smile about. The other being at 17:47, OF COURSE!

@@mvfreedom ~ nice! LoL. I didn't know you could hyperlink it - I always just type in a time - but I had no idea it would take you there by clicking it. 🤷‍♂️ Anyhow - I asked a question in the OP about antifouling/speedproping the other items on the hull.. maybe you'll read/reply about it later, haha... In any case, you've made a subscriber out of me so keep up the great work - I appreciate getting a view into your world - it's very generous of you to share. 👍👍

Rewatching some old videos today... around how much did the dive gear cost? Shawn mentioned the cost savings from having a dive service do a cleaning 4 times a year but I'd have to imagine the dive gear you have cost a decent amount. (if this ends up in a Q+A I am Trevor from Michigan :)

*Tim Morrisey* The larger islands in the San Juan Archipelago are accessible by Washington State Ferry from Anacortes, and Orcas Island has a lighthouse on which bald eagles perch. Both Orcas Island and San Juan Island have miles of beaches and trails through forests, along with nice towns for when you want "civilized" amenities like restaurants and gift shops. Friday Harbor on San Juan Island also has a Whale Museum, a sculpture park, and more. I went to Orcas Island just before the stay-home order went into effect, and I went to San Juan Island yesterday to celebrate the re-opening. I highly recommend a ferry trip to the San Juan Islands for anyone who wants to experience the Pacific Northwest "island lifestyle" but who doesn't own a boat.
