Boat Tour! I found 2 Catamarans w/ Broken Bulkheads Just Like Mine!

Tesla road trip across the country to tour 2 Lagoon 450's with broken bulkheads exactly like mine. 8 months ago I knew nothing and Colin from ‪@ParlayRevival‬ discovered broken bulkheads on my catamaran. Now I get to pay it forward with everything he taught me and help 2 friends inspect their bulkhead damage. Next week, we'll be back to Panama and all the boat work and fiberglass craziness!

Great episode. Love the style. To those 450 owners who want to brow beat you about exposing this major design flaw, shame on them for wanting to bury this safety issue. Someone could die at sea as the rigging goes slack and the boat starts to fail structurally. Thank you, and Parley and others too, for demanding a solution.

No doubt, Dave. If it is true that no owners have filed a lawsuit, and that no class action suit has been forth-coming, I question the intellectual capacity of Lagoon 450 owners. Such a pervasive and catastrophic mis-design yet the owners just wallow in the quagmiire, create KZread videos and sing Kumbaya together. If it were me, I'd be putting a call into Blood, Hurst and O'Reardon. By attempting to repair the boat as Parlay Revival did, you are subjecting yourself to inhaling more fiberglass and resin dust than one should reasonably do in three lifetimes. Not to mention the massive exposure to solvent compounds known to cause organ cancers. This, even if you do all you can to control your exposure. Jobs like that should be worked in nearly the same fashion as asbestos abatement. I feel for these hapless blokes, but cannot understand their willingness to take it up the backside. Must have something to do with the personality make up of cat owners in general. No matter what, Dave Shih makes great videos. All of them are tour de force productions for a KZread guy.

It's probably been obvious to everyone else for months, but I just realized that a lot of what many of us thought were "fit and finish" quality issues on lagoons may well have been shifting from broken bulkheads. Also, if you're editing this yourself, bravo. If you hired someone, keep them, it's a unique style on boattube.

Exactly!! Its so common to hear that this and that problem is "normal" on a lagoon. Yes, they're only normal because all the bulkheads are broken and causing those issues. Thanks for the kind words on the editing! If i could find someone to edit I would absolutely use them because this episode literally took me 67 hours to edit. Didn't sleep from thursday early morning until saturday night. Also edited every spare second of the day all week between all the boat work. Yes , so true . A friend had a Lagoon 450 and I stayed on it a number of times . Great party platform and comfortable but I noticed the crap fit and finish , sliding door not closing and more and just put it down to production boat . I now realize it was busted too . He never sailed it , it was just a party platform for the Caribbean and there was a different boat for sailing - he said the Lagoon sailed like shit and motored everywhere . So he never broke it Lucky for him he sold it before this all came out and never knew about it .

  • @david_shih

Its crazy how long this problem has been lurking being the cabin walls. If there are newer 2020 models with this issues that means the older ones were probably broken just out of the factory. There was just no reason to premptively disassemble wooden walls and trim to inspect the bulkheads. So they just kept bending and warping until one day it finally fails completely and the rigging goes slack. Then you know...

Another tip, if it's necessary to file stainless steel don't use a convention file unless you finish with a cutting disk and polish the cut edge, the reason? A file is made of carbon steel and when you file anything with it, it leaves steel deposits on the stainless, this mixed with salt water make for rusty streaks, trust me this was something else we learnt through experience and experiments.

@@david_shih The thing is, Lagoon pretty much HAVE to help owners out, now it's proven that a) the issues aren't "hurricane damaged boats" only and b) that they have some manufacturing issues, as demonstrated by the state of some of the bulkheads. If they start hassling legit owners like yourself I doubt they'll ever sell another boat - things already look pretty tough online whenever anyone tries to sell one, and that won't change unless and until Lagoon get a reputation for helping their customers, so I reckon things will work out in the end. Also, some of the nations that have bought Lagoon boats have some fairly bulletproof lemon laws - Norway and Finland, to name just two. But in 8 years time kids are all grown up, my loans should be paid off and the more I see from the Lagoons I recon you might still be in Panama fixing up your boat so keep a beer cold for me 2030!!

David, don't worry about the haters, both yourself and Colin have helped communicate to people the need for a proper survey on ANY boat purchase. Not just Lagoon 450's or any specific builder... ALL boats need a survey as part of purchase.. or the boat had better be $ Free ! You have to know what is going on, particularly since this is a home that MOVES. You can't get a loan on most homes without an inspection in most places in US, a boat needs it even more.. any seller trying to avoid that isn't worth buying from imo... Take Care !

Great entertainment. Let me comment on the number of Lagoon Catamarans... If the 450 is affected, also the other models will probably have issues. The bonding of the plywood is done on all Lagoons the same way. Maybe the bulkheads on other models are stronger against buckling and bending but the joints below the floor for example will be done similar. And as said the bonding to the hull also.

  • @david_shih

The bulkhead issue is not only the 450. We have fixed a 50 with the same issues. I have just finished fixing a 450. Both have companionway and forward bulkheads, inboard on both, damage. As boat builders in NewZealand we are appalled with the construction methods used. I used Iroko timber posts on the frd repairs glued to the existing bulkhead. I removed the companionway bulkheads each side and replaced with a19mm mixed grain hardwood ply, 4 layers of 625 double bias tabed to wing deck and all around the cabinets etc, fitted fore& aft bulkheads and glassed on to the cockpit floor and bridge deck. We hung the boat so the hulls ended up within 10 mm of the design center line. If anyone would like me to email some pictures I would be happy to do so. sailorwalks@hotmail.com. The material costs are not that great, but the hrs can add up.

The Lagoon 450 when released was the catamaran that just about everybody wanted, it was a beautiful design and that flybridge was simply heaven. The bulkhead issue is never going to go away and Lagoons response has been pretty lack-luster at best. Anybody who thinks about it will recognise that it would cost millions of dollars for Lagoon to do all the repairs to all these cats but failing to do the right thing is costing them more in lost business and a devalued product and reputation. Like you the 450 was one of my dream cats but would I buy one now --- I don't know, would Lagoon be my first choice in a cat purchase, also doubtful. Even if every 450 is repaired this story will be remembered for a long time. This cat is tainted because even if the bulkheads are repaired can owners be sure that all the secondary damage as been found and repaired. It will never have the same number of people chasing to buy second hand and certainly will only sell at rock bottom prices.

@@russellprout723 Sadly you are probably right Russell. Even if properly repaired and strengthened any potential purchaser would be hesitant or at the very least want to see all the repairs, strengthening and possibly engineers reports and those items may not be available. The crying shame is that this is a fantastic design and if properly repaired is one of the best cruising cats ever built. The damage to Lagoon's reputation (which was a bit dodgy anyway re after sales service) will take a long time and a lot of money to repair.

@@david_shih I hope so David. Where the owners have gone through their boats like yourself and Colin have it would make me as a potential buyer happier than if a yard were to do so.

Great Vid, man that is the cleanest boat I have ever seen. Nice shots of the 450 from all around, love the 450 flybridge but I had to look up that Nautitech 46 Fly and that is something else (although the 450 as a bench encourages you to be together)... Trust Dave to come up with a Tesla hack for steering hahahaha

Nice thanks for sharing this with us. Its been a problem for a lot of people for sometime. Sad to see its a problem with boats that didn't have damage from storms. Its really a good looking boat and should be fixed. I would like to see the factory help with this a little more but I guess that there trying to limit there involvement so they can say its just hurricane damage or something like that. But its not. Good luck and safe travels. You have gained a new subscriber.
