I Sacrificed 3 Days of My Life GRINDING Fiberglass to Save $18k

We find and grind out every single fiberglass crack and delamination on our Lagoon 450 bulkheads. We suit up ebola style and grind what feels like every surface in boat. You won't believe the buckets and buckets of dust, and that's just the bit we were able to collect. Welcome to the hardest 3 days of my life. Hey Peter! I'm terrified of getting more crap in my lungs. Also its amazing what you can accomplish when you're trying desperately to avoid something else. I spent a good month procrastinating starting the grinding, coming up with more and more parts of the dust collection and ventilation system. Eventually I built it all and had no more excuses but to start grinding!

Well I would say poor or sloppy workmanship is a large part of what we live with. There are many apartment/Condo buildings being town down after 20 or 30 years yet my Aunt and Uncle lived in a cottage that had an entry in the Domesday book. I myself purchased a showhouse on a new estate this is built so prospective buyers can order off book .I toured some of these slightly newer houses that had never been live din and the difference in quality was palpable. However a boat is something you rely upon to keep you safe whereas Lagoon obviously slapped then together as quick as they could. It may well be that those 450's that have not had bulkhead issues YET only are in this shape as these boats had better workmanship. I think people should reconsider buying any French built boat the cost of labour is obviously a lot higher in France then say Vietnam South Africa etc.

  • @david_shih

@@glennedwards1449 so i’d say most of the 450s show the problem, and if not, it just hasn’t happened yet and needs to be reinforced. The other lagoon models should be fine, despite the ‘standard’ workmanship levels.

Looks to me to be severely lacking in design strength. I'm not sure these repairs will hold up. Sad to see those cabinets ripped out. I think they will cost a bunch to make look good again. It seems to me the cabinets should have been designed to add lots of structural support. Any boat designer who relied on 3/5" 7 ply wood was not very good. As Collin said his additional lower side plies popped right off so they glued and screwed some like yours. I see so many shear failures and a few days of fiberglass slapped on is wishfull thinking. The fix kit was hatched in the boardroom as an appeasement. Those 450's and 500s have zero resale value in this mechanical engineers opinion.

A full-face positive-pressure (from remote) air supply mask is a really good thing. I use a Breathe Cool II from Turbine Products. A turbine pump is placed in an area with clean air and supplies low pressure air through a hose to the full-face mask. I no longer have sweat dripping in my eyes, or rolling around in the bottom of the mask. No worries about an imperfect mask seal. I haven't tried it yet, but I've got a Y-valve to split the incoming air into the Tyvek suit. That's a modification recommended to me by a shipyard worker. It should help cool and keep some particles out.

@@david_shih The mask works really well. I've used it in nearly white-out conditions while grinding fiberglass in the forward storage compartments of my catamaran during a Florida summer. The cyclonic separators upstream of the shop vacs are definitely required when working with such volumes of fine dust. I use one from Home Depot that fits on a 5-gal bucket. With that and a HEPA filter in the vac, exhausting air into the living area has been OK for me. I'm about to setup a negative pressure zone to grind in one of the heads. I now live aboard, so I'll have to be very careful about leakage. I'll use a 20 inch box fan with a 20 inch air filter taped to it, and fashion an adapter to a pair of 3 inch flexible duct hoses that will fit to the small portlight there. I can't just release dust where I'm docked now. Was the dust that escaped your zone solely from you entering and exiting?

Loving the map of the boat where you show the area you are working on, but really it's all of it, great cuts, great music, great info, and it seems like your videos just get better and better. Great work on your dust system as well! Not being there I can't tell but the only thing I can point out that might make it better is metered air replenishment. You of course want to keep a low pressure area where you are working but also allow a finite amount on new air in to allow your exhaust fan (cool unit by the way) to carry away the particles. No idea if the air from under the door and all the crevices is enough, but you could always put one more hole in your window board and another bit of wood on a screw that you can rotate over the hole in order to adjust incoming flow. Ehh, it's a theory at least. Cheers, it might not be easy, but you will have immortal videos of those times to look back on and for others to study and enjoy :-)

If you don't have an air compressor, a leaf blower level of air is the next best thing, and then finish with high pressure water like from a hose nozzle, not a pressure washer. :-). Use the air and water to push it off your skin, rather than against and into your skin. There's no perfect prevention from itches after it's already on your skin, but avoiding rubbing it in, and a hose spray at the end, has made the itches uncommon enough for me.

Protect your ball is priority nr one. Good stuff. David. Drop those mask filters. Get a mask connected to a hose with pressured fresh air. No big engine. Just some positive pressure to breath. A bit cumbersome but clean air and easy breathing will compensate a lot.

Dan...i've made some videos years ago that got tens of views. So i'm really trying to put more effort into these as I love the process and would love to be able to do this full time one day. I really appreciate you noticing the little things...and yes these vids are taking forever to edit at the moment--I'm down to about 70 hours each. It's not exactly sustainable in the long term, but hoping i figure something out to speed up the process.

  • @Dan-ld2py

    @Dan-ld2py

    2 жыл бұрын

@@david_shih 70 hours is definitely up there in terms of editing for you to be able to release even a biweekly vid, and of course, that's not feasible if you want to get anything else done. You'll get faster at it, for sure, although you might need to cut some of the little details from time to time if you want to keep to a deadline, it depends where you want to go with it. IMO, don't worry too much about releasing on a set schedule at this point, I'm sure most of us viewers can appreciate the amount of effort you're putting in making and editing the videos, and as long as you're enjoying doing it, it'll shine through in the end result. Having said all that, there's no doubt you'll be able to grow to match the larger boatbuilding/sailing channels one day. I'm already looking forward to the time I'll be like: 'David Shih? Yeah, I saw his first video when it was actually released, are you just catching up now?'

I worked with sheet and shard fiberglass for a living. Use 2 different shower scrunchie. Cold first wash helps. Only wash down, NEVER up. From the top of your arm to your fingers. NEVER up. Pulling up only pushes the glass in your skin more. The fist shower scrunchie is to remove glass, the 2nd is to clean. Even when the work is done, wash down for a week after.

Keep a generous amount of baby powder handy. We drench ourself with that stuff and pour sufficient in our clothes and coveralls to keep glass dust from entering the pores on our skin. Shop air it off when done grinding and the itching is almost non existing. We also keep powder handy for sticky hands and fingers that accidentally touched resin. Good for those hard to reach places where gloves get ripped up and you need to grab something that can't get resin on it. Give tour hands a couple of good squirts of baby powder and Bob's your uncle.

What a shambles the Lagoon factory is, they appear not to have a clue.

Oh god I have so much more to say about that. Throw money at it! Go into debt! What ever you do don’t go into it thinking it’s as easy as Colin and Jamie made it look!

You better stop this fancy editing David or you will have to start doing this full time, no excuses. Another highly entertaining episode although just a few minutes longer than last time but great stuff, love the content.

Thank you so much Gary! I would love to be able to do this full time. I’m trying hard to grow this channel so that I might be able to do that one day. I almost broke 20 minutes on this one!!! How long do you think is too long?

@@david_shih David, I reckon with the way you keep up so entertained, 28 minutes would be your target in the medium term.

@@david_shih it didn't feel like 20 minutes at all. I enjoyed it a lot. Probably anything less than 30min would ideal, but I'd totally enjoy watching for more than 30 minutes. I wonder if youtube let's you know how long the average viewer watches each video. You could experiment and make sure most people are watching your whole video

Hey Rold, youtube definitely has metrics, and the ones that help the most is when the average viewer watchs for more than say 50% of the video. Thanks so much for watching and appreciate the encouragement!

Excellent content, storytelling and editing make for a great video. Lagoon should be buying back every Lagoon 45 at market value B.C. (Before Colin).

Yes this should be a buyback. But why before BC?
