Lovely boat. More experienced opinions below have concerns, but this Southerly looks solid. As a parent of eight, I can assure you Liam will only be around for a year or two then he'll be off with his own agenda. Get out sailing as soon as you can so you can get at least one season in with him. Great channel too BTW. I'm so tired of sailing channels where people have pets instead of children! Kids define the adventure I reckon. Cheers guys.

You are absolutely right in what you say Jim, now is the time before he's doing his own thing, with being a parent of eight you will know more than most that it comes around so quickly. We have been blown away by the support and advice given from more experienced sailors regarding this boat and future boats, this is the best thing about having the channel. We have made an offer a boat so fingers crossed. We know we will have this summer and at a push the following summer before Liam wants to do his own thing. Great advice Jim thank you very much.

We fell in love with the inside helm, the owner brought her from Chichester to Falmouth in Force 8's and shut the companion way and enjoyed the journey in the dry. We also loved the fact she's got all new rigging and had the keel removed and refurbished. She's such a solid boat but lacks the storage and space unfortunately. The Oceanis 36cc in our previous video had heaps more room and storage. But the lifting keel gives more options for anchoring, oh decisions decisions 🤔 Thanks

Yes the storage issue is a big thing, we know that a 36ft boat won't have heaps of storage, however other 36footers we have looked at have had considerably more than this Southerly. Also 36ft isn't going to be perfectly ideal for the 4 of us but we don't want to go too big for our first boat. Cheers

I think it has a nice floor plan for a 36ft boat.. A nice pilothouse sailboat.. Not many offer the pilothouse to stay out of the weather when things get rough with an amazing view too.. That is an option that would sell me..

Thank you for bringing us along on your journey. I find it interesting and informative. I have to say 36’ seems a little small for any long voyages but short ones would work Kids will eventually end up sleeping in the saloon anyway...or at least my experience. Bending over to get to master would drive me nuts after awhile.

We are looking at boats around 36ft because it's our first boat and want to gain experience before moving on to something bigger and more blue water ready. It wasn't enjoyable bending down to the master whilst the boat was on the hard so we can imagine it being worse when rolling around. Kyle has already said he wants to sleep on the sofa lol. Sailing SV Compromise I don’t think you will find much difference between sailing a 36 or a 42 IMHO. I understand wanting to walk before you run but might be good for everyone to have some space also. With that said, it doesn’t matter if you are only day sailing. 36 will work fine for that.

To be honest we was initially looking at 40ft to 45ft boats and went on a few of them, it was only when we looked at the Beneteau 36CC that we decided a 36 was big enough for our first boat. Having said that all the other 36 footers do seem quite small, maybe the 36CC is designed in such a way it feels a lot bigger than a 36 footer. It will be our first boat so will be used for long weekends and the school holidays so the most amount of time we will spend on the boat will be in the school holidays for two to three weeks at a time. This is going to be the boat we will cut our teeth with, before looking at a larger more solid Bluewater cruiser for living aboard and working our way to NZ and Oz. Thanks for the advice.

It doesn't help that Liam is 6ft at 15yrs old 😬 and Kyle will more than likely be the same. We have decided on a boat and made an offer 🤗 🌬⛵️

We have a 9yo child and we decided to buy a 27 feet 1985 jeanneau sailboat. it is not for liveaboard but it accomodates well 3 people for a while. The southerly 37 looks great for a larger family! plus it looks in very good conditions and it won't take much to refit it following your taste. of course there are many nice boat out there to chose from. very often you will feel in your gut when the boat is the right one for you. have fun and fair winds.

We are pretty much the same, this will be our first boat and not to liveaboard, it's more to learn on and enjoy our holidays with untill we are ready for a larger boat to live on. we were lucky and found exactly what we wanted for the price we wanted after vising just a few boats (and a couple of boat show... but the annual boat show are just for 'the pleasure of the eyes', as we say in Italy, given the prices. We even went aboard a 60 feet solaris...It was beautiful but definitely out of budget. Plus such big boats have a lot of electronics, batteries etc and we don't want to run our engine for too long during our holidays). Anyway, let's keep in touch. Best. Alberto

Hehe we too went on the big boats at the Southampton boat show here in the UK. They were nice and luxurious but way over our budget and we would be scared to moor up anywhere. We think we have found the perfect boat for us, we will be releasing a video next week. All the best Gav

Great video, got to admit I have looked at this 115 a few times good room for a 37foot boat. The lifting keel sells it for me always wanted to go through the French canals to the med. Noticed she has a tabernackle as well so no fees for lifting / dropping the mast, this with all the work she has done ++. She is also bulit in the 80s so will have a strong hull not like the new boats you can see the sun through the hull and can flex. You can acess a lot more crusing & anchorage with this draft as they say go small go now.

We did say if she was the boat for us we would go through the french canals for sure, that would be a great holiday alone! We wanted her to work for us so much! on paper she is perfect. But the fact she doesn't have the storage we need is a problem. If it was just the two of us we would have signed the paperwork there and then. Like you said she will be such a solid boat having being built in the 80's and opens up so much opportunities for anchorages. The fact you could dry her out in low tides is also a huge bonus. Love that saying "go small go now" Cheers

Yes she's a lovely boat and has lots of plus's like the raised deck and inside helm, lifting keel. But she's a bit too cramped inside for the four of us. We haven't fully ruled her out yet though. We could get something newer in a couple years but need to be sailing this year.

Great video guys. As always. The boat has a lot of moisture damage to veneers and woodwork, got to ask why? Southerly great boats. More modern boats have better storage as 3 d cad design makes use of all the space. I would. Look at the priorities of what you need; size, space, good engine, hull, sails, rigging. Cosmetics you can deal with. Big kit like auto helm , radar, canvas covers are secondary. Go for solid, good engine and good sails and rig. Everything else you can fix.

Always great advice from you guys, thank you👌🏼 One of the jobs it had done in October at Northshore was re-sealing all the windows because some leaked slightly, maybe this is where the moisture is from. We like the idea of an older solid boat but don't want to take on too much work for our first boat and we have recently researched on a forum that the 115 is quite a rollie boat. Like you say a good engine is paramount! Dvseire came up with a good idea of roll playing the boat, for example having the four of us sat around the table or doing the daily things we'd expect to be doing and make sure it works for us. When we see what instruments are on a boat we Google them to see any reviews or feedback lol. Cheers Ant & Cid x

Windows!!! Most are bedded on silicone mastic. 6-8 Year life span in the marine environment.. To basic rules; aluminium frames use non setting butyl sealant. This will let the frame and the GRP deck expand at different rates, as they do. Bonded windows, Sikaflex with bond breaker strip wherever there is a 3 way bond IE two window sections and the deck. Good videos and how to's with Sika and there tech department are great. Ant and Cid

Yeh that makes sense, a broker did say the same about aluminium cleats on fibreglass decks expanding at different rates. I'm not sure if the staining was from the windows leaking or just condensation, not to worry though she's not the one!

It is a fairly oldish boat but southerlies don't come cheap their a well built quality yacht. The keel system is well proven and will not give you any problems. I know them well myself as I'm on my fifth one including two 115s a '89 and a 2004 the later was an excellent boat and do regret selling her. With the keels up the 115s float in just 0.7m of water and dry perfectly upright and stable. Fantastic boat to own with the two kids. Though the one in Falmouth is a touch old if you can find a 115 from the nineties it should be similar money or not much more. The Southerly Owners Association is a very useful source of info and yachts do come available on there. The forum is free to access you just need to register. If you do need any experienced advice on these please don't hesitate to ask.

Great advice Trevor thank you, being on your Fifth Southerly you will know them very well. We wished we had a bigger budget for something slightly newer and either bigger or with more storage. Even though this 115 is old she’s had just shy of £20k spent in 2017 but needs even more money to get her how we would want. Somebody else mention about the Southerly owners forum being a good source of support and things for sale. Thanks again.

Nice rigid boat and love the possibility to get really low draft to visit those atolls in the Pacific. It do need some TLC but anyone could do that interior nice again. Question. What did they ask for it? Think I missed that. Cheers from Sweden

Yes, fully agree with you. Myself looking for something for a couple with occational guests. Too many boats today are made for charter intent. Not for live aboard Couples. I am looking for just a forward and an aft bedroom. I guess it would run even cheaper here then as UK prices seem to be higher. Thanks alot.

sm6wet That particular Southerly had over £20k spent on it at a Southerly dealers on the keel, hull and decks. Amazing boat just too small for us. Totally agree with you regarding most modern boats are made for charters.

Agree with you thoughts in that it was too small for you all. The broker was right in one thing though, that unless you have an infinite amount of money any boat is a compromise. We have been through the same and now on our 4th boat, and this will do us for a while.

To be honest I had footage on the normal camera but made things too close so had to go with the gopro wide angle. If you are on your 4th boat you will have a great understanding of the difficulty in trying to find something suitable but not too big for a first boat. What boat do you have now Lee?

You are right in that you will want something big enough but also not too big (a hard thing to do). An AWB (average white boat) such as a Bavaria (or a Hunter Legend like we have) may offer what you want as they are set up for the Med market really and the fact they are used by the charter companies in the Med says something.

Think you are right Lee, we found the Beneteau 36CC to feel far larger inside than the Southerly. We have just looked on yachtworld at the Hunter legend 36 and they look stunning, the only drawback is they are slightly over our budget for our first boat. They also look spacious for a 36!

Very good video guys. Personally, I think its just too small for your family. A 40 to start maybe & 2 heads, your not mum, dad & 2 kids, really you need the room for 4 adults. I look farward to the next video to see what way you go, Cheers

This exact same boat seems to be still for sale or for sale again 6 years later by same broker.

You are right abut the lack of stowage on these 115's, it is quite limited for living aboard as a family. Have you looked at any of the older Oyster's? 39, 406 435 can crop up for similar money to the Southerly and will be a reasonable investment. Good aft cabins and lots of stowage and big tanks too.

jigsawofgosport We have typed our search credentials into yachtworld on pretty much a weekly basis but not come across the Oyster's. We will do a specific search for them, an oyster would be an ideal solid boat with plenty of help available. We can understand why the stowage isn't great on the 115's because of the lifting keel taking up room. Thank you for watching, hope you enjoyed the video!

I just had a look at the ad, from the photos it seems in reasonable condition and fairly well kitted out for a family of four. I have an elderly Oyster and they work as liveaboard boats.The forepeak is quite spacious for two people, we often have two adult males sleeping up front for periods. We did an Atlantic circuit in our boat about ten years ago and are just getting it ready to go away again next year. You might also look at older Amel's such as the Sharki and Maramu they are very good liveaboard boats and they are often for sale at good prices in France. I have no idea what your boat buying budget is like, but just a couple of ideas that are a little different.

The claims that she's been recently antifouled and that the running rigging is new don't appear to be true. Personally; I'd avoid a drop keel - more to go wrong ( and the keel is quite important!) - , but each to their own there. I see no real advantage to the tabernacled mast if you're thinking of salt water sailing, and even in the canals, if you drop the mast in its tabernacles, the whole thing is in the way. I actually think the boat is big enough for 4 of you, although it'll be tight. Bigger boat = more expense (generally), so there's a compromise there somewhere. I'd recommend buying from private (with a survey). Better prices and you don't have to put up with the BS from the agent.

I could see the standing rigging was new but the running didn't look new. One of our subscribers did say they have had a keel stick on a 115 which isn't ideal! I suppose with its lifting keel and tabernacle mast she would be ideal to do canals but like you say the mast would be something you would have to live with in the way. In comparison to the Oceanis 36cc she feels very small internally and the stowage is an issue both on deck and internally. Great advice thanks

I suppose the one real advantage of the tabernacled mast is that it makes it very easy too work on anything that's high up on the mast.

I dreaded watching this through to the end, because I thought you might say we bought it! Its clearly not a suitable boat for your family, because of the limited storage and living space. The enclosed steering position, the tabernacle mast step and alleged new standing and running rigging were all good points, but the hull really didn't look anything like it had been "fully restored", just from the video, I would have serious concerns with the rudder shoe and post, weeping from the rudder itself, the through hulls regardless of the sales patter and the keel joints looked like crap even if they hadn't been allegedly "fully restored" and the engine bay looked like it hadn't had a lot of attention. Perhaps you should consider doing more role playing in the boats you are looking at, all of you sitting down in the salon, pretending to make and serve dinner, someone moving through the boat as if you are going use the head or shower, while everyone else is sitting in the salon. this testing out the mechanics and practicalities will give you valuable information to make an informed decision. Also something to keep in mind is that Kyle is going to be much the same size as Liam in about three years, so Liam needs to be able fit in both bunks for them to be suitable. I know you have said you don't want to get a boat bigger than 36 feet, but I think you ought to reconsider this and look at some more options up to 40 feet.
