Boat Camping in a BLIZZARD

The temperature here in Maryland is dropping fast! It's going to be 17 degrees and snowing tonight. The problem is, the water around my boats is going to freeze and that could lead to some serious damage. I can't let that happen! I'm going to be sleeping over in my boat WEBO tonight so that I can make sure the ice doesn't freeze and ruin anything. It's going to be a very cold night camping in the boat, but that's what it takes to be a crabber sometimes.

Great video. Brings back some memories - when I was 8, my family and I lived on a boat for 2 years or so, some of that time in the Bay. I had a small berth and an old crate to hold my belongings. That was it. I'd lay there at night listening to the water against the hull just like you were describing those ice sounds. I'm sure I'm forgetting some miserable cold nights but those were some of the best times.

Brings back memories of when I used to live on a 28' boat for half a decade. It was pretty interesting for the most part and if I ever had to, I'd do it again. Little limited as far as amenities went for a while but it was pretty decent living. On really windy nights, I would get tossed around in the bow and listen to the ropes straining Miss ya, Dulcinea.

Greetings from Alaska. Just started checking out your YT content. Great job and good job on keeping the boats afloat. I admire the ambition and work ethic. Nice to see someone else who started in their teens too snd just keep sending it. I don’t do the commercial fishing thing but can relate. I run a construction company and have rentals and such. Never fails the worse the weather the busier I am either taking care of my own places or doing damage control on my clients homes. It was -10 here this week and I was shoveling my roofs to keep them from ice damming and or collapsing. Sometimes you just got to embrace the suck and keep going. Cheers to 2024

Luke, the cheap Chinese diesel heaters can be had for around $80 each. They could be plumbed to your diesel tank, exhaust is easy, and they are 12v DC. You could put it in the bilge and set the thermostat to 32 or so and problem solved. As a bonus, you could also heat the cabin and wheelhouse using the remote control and some additional dryer hose venting. Have fun... Joe

With good wishes and luck, you won't have to boat camp again this year. But if you do, a large sheet of cardboard over the he hatchway will help keep the heat nearer to you. But stretching a tarp over the cover and tying it off to the gunnals and stern will provide a little extra space. However, if you're really adventurous and risk taking. A camp propane tent heater is your friend. Just make sure you have extra one pound propane bottles or a connection hose to hook it to a standard gas grill bottle.

I would consider installing a couple diesel heaters. A fairly lowcost way of heating up both the engine bay and underhatch areas and the pilot house and cabin. Might also come in handy if you go for a winter season catch. They are pretty easy on 12V power and fuel also put out way more heat then a space heater. I live off grid in Arizona and use one for heating myself. As someone that has had boats I am reminded of the old saying " a boat is a big hole in the water you throw money into'"! Good for you if you can figure out how to pull that money and more back out of the water! Living independently and making your own living is an awesum thing!
