Why I'm SELLING my DREAM boat

darkseas.com/collections/dark...
It's come time to sell my dream boat, Webo. I was hoping this day wouldn't come, but the Webo isn't going to be able to do what I want it to do. Even though it's a great boat, it's not a great crabbing boat because it drafts too much water. The Webo is the best built boat I've had and has a bunch of features that are not common in other boats. The craftsmanship is top notch! I hate to see it go, but it just means that there is another new boat on the horizon...

That is such a bullshit statement that's been around for too many years. One of my saddest days was selling my last boat because of medical reasons and I miss boating more than anyone could imagine . It's expensive but I regret nothing . Edit This statement is said mostly by people that have never owned a boat or could never even dream of being able to afford one . My last boat that I sold I had for 11 years and I sold it for more than I paid for it . And that was because of all the labor and love that I put into taking care of it and keeping it in pristine shape . There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about my boating days on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake .

My brother had a 22ft 57 wood Owens, and he added more metal to the rutter. Without power stearing, he had a hard time turning the wheel. The next year, he cut it off and sold the boat, then bought a brand new 28ft, 12.5 ft beamed Hatteras in 1966. It was one of the smallest boats they ever made. It was fast but could spin around on a dime being twin screw. It was when they started converting over to fiberglass, and it was thick.

The deeper parts of the bay are basically dead zones a lot of year. Due to the oxygen depletion from the farming run off. Even in my short 38 years I have seen how bad the bay has become. Thankfully the legislature is taking big steps to try to save it before it is unmanageable. We have a lot other rivers being restored to and some of the largest went from a D grade in water quality to B the last couple of years.

You should look into kinnamon boats they build them on tilghman Island. Obviously nobody makes a cheap boat nowadays but they built a few for us when I was working up there on the bay. you can't beat one of their boats. We had a 28 footer two 30 footers. The Brittany May was somewhere around 40 and then the last boat they did for us was a 46 by 14 called the little miss Emily. 6 pots wide between the gunwales. And we'd stack them 7 wide and 3 high on the roof. Cummins 450 in the dog box. There were no more days off due to rough seas when we started working that boat 😂. Jellyfish are the only thing I don't miss from those days. There's no better feeling than having to pull the boat into the travel lift slings with 100 bushels on the boat and water coming in the scuppers.

I had the pleasure of working with and learning a lot about the Chesapeake deadrise, from start to finish, with Joey who owns Sinapatuxent Boatworks in Snow Hill Md, out of 2 chicken houses. Which actually are pretty perfect to do it in. Which in comes in handy bcuz I’ve redone a floor in a 35’ Maycraft as well as many other repairs for friends and family. I’d much rather take and spend the money for a custom built “wooden plank” boat, than just going the cheaper route and buying something that’s a production model. I’ve found that that’s the ONLY way you’ll find your perfect boat.I’m 53 and I wished I had the space to build a smaller 16-18’ Chesapeake skiff outfitted the way I want. A person could build a boat like that in say 10-12 months comfortably, while working a regular 40 hr a week job. If properly taken care of, the boat could outlive the lifetime of the builder.
