Nickal, a 3-time NCAA Division I National Champion (finalist in 2016) and a three-time Big 10 champion out of Penn State, has
the UFC (and amateur wrestling) community standing up to take notice of one of the more promising prospects to come out of American Collegiate wrestling
in quite some time.
Under the tutelage of Mike Brown, Katel Kubis, Thiago Alves and others at ATT (Coconut Creek), and a wrestling pedigree to match his fiery,
Viking-like drive, it seems that the 185 lb division has been put on check by the 26 year old budding star.
With very little wrestle-heavy competition at the upper ranks of 185 lbs., I'm excited to see what this phenom can do in what I think is the perfect
division for him / his career.

Indeed Nate. I think this kid is mentally very tough as well. There aren’t many American Wrestlers with that pedigree in the UFC and certainly not @ 185. Should be interesting, cheers 🍻

From what I've seen, he doesn't lack the confidance as well. He has set his eyes on the top. Has all the natural tools and hard work mentality to reach it. However, I do think AKA would be a better fit because of the competition day in and day out inside the gym. Probably would become their crown piece. As for the 185 division, Romero had more decorated wrestling career but he never bothered to use those skills in MMA so Bo tops him in that regard. Defensive poise that he has will do him a world of good. Looking forward to seeing him in the Octagon. Great work as always, brother. Cheers.

It would be interesting to make some kind of comparison between him and the Dagestani fighters. He has that Justin Gaethje vibe about him (I hope I am wrong) - he probably fuckin' loves to beat people up, whereas to Dagestanis fighting is their second nature and they don't really like it. They embrace it, it is just the way they are and their emotions are for the most part in check. Calmness amid all the chaos.

He said in an interview it was between AKA and ATT. He went with ATT because he started at a local ATT in PA. Seeing him work with Eagle's MMA/AKA would be the best stable of grapplers MMA has ever seen in one room. But ATT is world class too. I don't see him as a Gaethje. Gaethje's wrasslin is comparing a backup OT in football to a 3 time MVP QB. Same sport, different levels of success and 'sport intelligence'. The athleticism seems to have a high disparity as well. But you never know right? RE: comparison vs Daegestani's would be, as I thought as well, very apt. Wrestling from toddler's age, his mother being a boxer and his father his coach all the way thru HS, growing up in the back country (not as hard as D'stan but he's originally from Colorado I believe and then lived in other remote spots), a strong faith and a strong love and devotion to his family. Then you have the international success at the highest of high levels. Then there's that killer instinct to finish and for competition that can't be taught, only kindled. His hips are always in the right spot too, he just floats and rides dudes like a pommel horse while advancing position. Always square to the mat, look at that angle he had on the triangle. Watch the fight before that too. Just amazing stuff.

Great thread boys, I’ll add that I think his collegiate competition history may stray him from “cowboy-itus”, a la Gaethje, and even Khamzat has shown more than I’d like. I think when someone has achieved greatness, and still wants to play the sport of fighting, it says a lot re: character, and oftentimes it shows in performance. He has a ways to go, but I love his professional approach thus far.

@@ajgambs44 Some pretty nice takes You've got there. I take my hat off to you, Sir. I didn't know that much about his background, but, in my defence, I was comparing him to Gaethje only in that "wild" taste he leaves behind when watching him fight. It is beyond obvious that his fighting pedigree is superior to those of many and not just Justin. His MMA body of work is too small though. All it takes is one Poatan's left hook just as the other way around. Fun times are ahead of us. He is a guy to look after and root for.

Dagestani guys like islam, khabib are so dominant not only because of the wrestling but because of their top pressure, submission game , relentless training . They’ve been doing sambo which is basically mma since the age of 6 . And one more thing these Dagestani guys been training with Olympic medalist level wrestlers all their life.

This proves how dominant Gordon Ryan would be in mma. He manhandled bo nickel which is insane to think about

  • @BrendanDormanMMA

    @BrendanDormanMMA

    Жыл бұрын

I want that to be true, but even John has said that Gordon is built more for grappling. Tonon was the best suited for MMA of the bunch bc of his athleticism, and I’m not sure that Gordon would ever have the ability to get high level guys down. In BJJ people are forced to engage Gordon, in MMA they would try desperately not to. He didn’t manhandle him, and JDen Cox def did manhandle Gordon (ps I love Gordon, this isn’t personal) in the stand up portion of the grappling. What remains to be seen from the American pedigree is the ability to keep someone grounded who wants to stand up, sometimes people watch Islam or Khabib and think it’s wrestling but it’s so much more. Cheers, good post

If you follow wrestling there are a few guys from each generation that stand out and nickal is one of them. Probably would be a perennial world medal contender if not for the strength of the US in his weight class. Aside from Aaron Pico most have turned out to be champs. Probably the best wrestler in the ufc since Cejudo/Anyone from Dagestan

Masterclass once again. He's the American version of a Daegestani. I.e. wrestling from 5 years old, growing up in rough terrain, being coached by his father, and strong faith. There's gotta be something to that combo. My only claim to fame is that I turned you on to Khamzat and then this other savage, and you cosigned. And you haven't been wrong yet!

Great stuff as always shame it’s not getting more views yet hopefully it changes but it’s still appreciated by those watching. How do you compare him to Khamzat I find it hard to judge fighters who haven’t fought the same level of competition you seem to be good at that we know Bo is running through these guys but Khamzat has already done that against Gerald who I don’t think has ranked but is definitely at a higher level than the guys Bo is fighting

  • @BrendanDormanMMA

Well Khamzat best fN Durinho, that’s just unheard of w/ that experience. I talked about it earlier off air, and I think I need to see Bo against someone who’s game I know better or in person maybe to have a fair answer. I think he’s shown a better IQ and swagger, whereas Khamzat seems almost sensitive like he’s been bullied or something? I don’t know if he can get his head on straight but for athleticism it looks like Khamzat, and for intangibles I’d take Bo. I just want to see a scintilla more I guess. Good question, cheers 🍻

@@BrendanDormanMMA Good answer the reason I asked is because Bo called him out after his last contender series fight I used Gerald as the example because Bo is at 185 and Gilbert has fought at 155 i also think that Khamzat is affected by the weight cut to 170 and is the main reason for what seem to be cardio issues he looked thin in his face for that one. Interesting thought on Khamzat maybe being bullied it’s not something I had thought about myself but can definitely see it being a possibility with the way he is reacting to things the thing with Abubakar when Khabib and Islam were celebrating was nuts and makes him seem like he’s unhinged even more so when they made a video the next day apologising

Brendan, A post assessment after fight with a Dagestani would be much better for proper evaluation about him even he bragging. We have witnessed few America collegiate wrestlers miserably failed against them in the match who were much better in paper and evaluation.

To further elaborate so you know I’m not a troll… people are more likely to watch and listen as opposed to read everything on their own… A certain percentage of your viewers immediately click out of the video once they realize all the reading that is required that affects your watch duration as well as other metrics which sends a signal to the algorithm to not push you

I appreciate constructive criticism, I admit I thought it was trolling at first, but I can handle that. It’s hard to pay for things without return (fancy cameras, real microphones, a pay-for-edit, and on it goes). Last year I paid the government more than I made from doing this. Here’s the thing that good rational men miss: You have to understand that I’m a musician also…..and when I started doing this, and was getting million view videos, it was just music and text. Some of them were LOOOOONG too, and it was the #smarks that were there then that get it now. I’m an artist, if it doesn’t feel like art, I’m not motivated to make it. I love talking sh*t about MMA with people in real time, but I don’t even know if I can get past agents at this point. In short, I’m stuck…..until someone reaches out for an interview or something, I’m going to be stuck.
