Had a moment to peruse KZread and learn more about the x5 4.8is that I've own for some time now. It is good to have some inside information on what I've experienced over the years and what may come. My x5 has 153K miles. No it's not a vehicle I drive everyday but it is a vehicle that when I am ready to travel it's ready to go. Despite the maintenance cost over the last five years, I got to admit... it beats going out buying a new vehicle. It continues to handle very well. And I must add, I stop taking my X5 to the BMW service dealer long ago. I found a local reputable foreign car auto service (Peak Auto - Apex NC) that has been my diamond in the rough.... and keeps my vehicle up-to-date. Yet... we are still looking for an occasional leak from time to time. Other than its red color, body style, custom running boards, and mag rims, ....three years ago, I got rid of the navigation\sound system and had the Kenwood Sound System installed with all the bells and whistles of today automobile systems (it is sweeter than ever). It is practically a brand new car still with tremendous power and handling.

I drove a 2006 E53 with the Inline 6 and the manual transmission. The engine wasn't "fast" but was more than enough for this car. What it lacked in low-end torque, it made up above 3k RPM. But the thing about the I6 is that it's by far the most reliable engine in this car. The manual transmission is very good in these cars, and easy to drive smoothly. Only "bad" part was the fuel economy because I got 22- 23 MPG with mostly highway driving.

I have a 2003 BMW X5 3.0 and absolutely love it except for the repair bills. Rebuilt transmission cost $5K at the dealership as it had to come from Germany as none were available domestically. Next was oil pan gasket at a cost of $2K at a local BMW mechanic I found. Replace moon roof cover $750. Replace drivers seat control $700. etc etc etc These huge cost came staggered over 2018. Easy to get trapped into this money pit once you start sinking money into it. My rational is cheaper than buying a new one plus I love it.

If you buy E53 4.8is for 6-7k and put in it even 10k for all repairs (complete rebuilt engine + transmission), you get to drive a 360HP, $100k truck next 200k miles for less than 20k. I would say that is a good deal. I bought one 3 years ago and still no major issues and saved $5k on a side because i know something big is going to fail but i do not know when and what. So if you want to save money, buy Honda Civic. And if you want to get a lot of car for a good price go with the V8 which also has therapeutic influence on the driver since you forget about all of your worries when you start that engine. Not cheap but would recommend if your budget is around 15k and you plan on keeping it for next 100-200k miles. And yes, you have to be a DIY guy.

I recently purchased a 2006 BMW X5 with a hundred and seventy-four thousand miles on it ...... I was looking for any videos I can find on basic maintenance and what things go wrong and what I should look for if I plan on keeping this vehicle right side door won't open from the outside the sunroof doesn't open or closed the shade is stuck open.... one more thing the armrest top opens but the bottom doesn't open the little latche. .. is broken so God knows what I'll find in there if I ever get it open I don't want to break anything so I just left it.... until maybe I find a little more information on how to fix this minor dilemma all in all everything runs good seems like maybe I might need a little front-end work though cuz it seems to clunk a little bit whenever I hit a pothole which are everywhere in Upstate New York right now..... thanks again for your wonderful informative video :)

Finding one that has been well taken care of is extremely difficult, because the ones that are cheap and are for sale are cared by 3rd or 4th owners who don't spend any extra money on maintaining their vehicle. For those 3rd or 4th owners that do maintain, they use cheap Chinese aftermarket parts and cheap oils, that either ruin the car's performance or destroy the car.

Valve stem seals is not that bad an issue if you don’t chose to fix it though. Sure your car will smoke if it sits idle for a while, but all that’s happening is a little bit of oil is passing through the worn seals and dripping onto the manifold. The smoke this causes comes out your exhaust. I had a 4.4 and the VSS’s were worn, but it never smoked while driving normally, and performance was never reduced.

  • @jhackett9352

Paul McPherson Worn valve guide seals also cause high crank case pressures. High crank case pressures increase oil gasket failure. They start to leak oil everywhere after a while.

Jeff Hackett eventually, yes, but you can get a fair amount of mileage before that happens. Most VSS leaks are minor. My X5 only ever smoked when left to sit on Tickover for 20 minutes or more. Admittedly that was early stages though, so obviously if someone has had the issue for a long time, it’s going to get worse.

Depends on condition of items and when they have been replaced before, but standard things to look at would be valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, crank case vent valve kit (with all 4 hoses), look out for front drive shaft failure, might be a good time to replace fuel pump and fuel filter, cooling system such as water pump with thermostat, expansion tank, check coolant hoses, also coolant transfer pipes under intake manifold, i can keep going😂 but definitely need to know history of repairs and just inspect those components

Troll Yusef Hunter's The New Home & Travel Channel The M62 is the greatest engine ever built by BMW. It was used in the e39 540i, e38 740i, Range Rover HSE 03-05, and the Bentley Arnage 98-09. V8 engines were never supposed to be "cheap" to maintain and im proud to say the powerplant of my BMW was selected by Bentley for almost a decade. Its a powerful engine that requires some attention every 50k miles or so and that doesn't bother me one bit because my 4 door sedan can chase down a Porsche turbo on the way to the grocery store.

Before you decide to buy one you have to ask the most important question: Am I going to do the work or do I have to pay someone to do it? If you can't do it and money is an issue but you still want this model then get the 3.0d or 3.0i. If you got money to spend get the 4.4i. If you have money to burn then skip the 4.6 and go directly for the 4.8i. Back then the 4.6 was an option but nowadays I see no reason to buy this particular model. Worst mileage of them all while maintenance will cost the same as the 4.8i.

I replaced 6 or 7 exterior door handles on that truck in the almost 300k miles it had on it. There was a week or so we had only one working door handle on our car because 3 others were broken at the same time. I absolutely despise the exterior door handles on this model. Cost isnt much different if you do it yourself Labour is the cost with the v8 and the things he mentioned e.g. stem seals there is a replacement part that doesn't go bad.. timing chain is same as most cars needs replacing 80 to 100 k some have made 150k with 5k oil changes front drive shaft was updated .. transfer case has updated parts with lifetime warranty from aftermarket places.. link arms as people mention go bad i mean come on its a 2ton car you can throw around something has to give!!! Air suspension can be a headache but same with others with it... the oil leak when you have to lift the engine is a pain but better seal is available coolant seal again has better seals available .. secondary airintake can clog but not often or at all if you do right things then the engine is bullet proof and powerful ... so get some tools, gloves and do it yourself bit by bit and boom reliable power

I own a Black Metallic Sapphire BMW X5 E53 2003 3.0D Sport Auto(2926cc, 184HP, 135KW) - And I say it’s the best of all X5 generations, I wasn’t sure about it when I bought it but then I deeply fell in love with this magnificent machine (it’s powerful, strong and reliable just only in one case if don’t allow others to mess with it), I had the bloody Police stopping me absolutely for no reason then they arrested me simply for being quite (because I did nothing wrong and all my paperwork up to date and correct) and they drove my Bemma, later on when they released me and I reunited with my passionate machine, I discovered many issues and problems didn’t exist before and they frankly messed up almost with everything in my reliable powerful machine… etc. also I had some stupid idiot mechanics messed up with it more than fixing it. Anyway I am now in the process of perfecting it again. Finally my answer is Yes indeed without a shadow of a doubt it worth buying a used BMW X5 E53 according to my own experience. (Sorry I forgot to mention that it’s the prettiest of all it’s successors so far by miles.)… if you fancy to see how steady and fast it goes check KZread videos {( BMW - Speed is a need & a Mobile Phone is handy indeed )} the journey from “Land’s End” to Reading Berkshire captured by my Samsung Galaxy S8+. #***And by the way I don’t have a girlfriend or a wife and no children at all - I had enough very nasty unpleasant experiences with women in the past!. - so please don’t ask why or how!!… so I made a decision to spend the rest of my life single, alone and individual until the day I die and this magnificent, powerful and reliable BMW X5 I own is every Love, Passion And desire in my personal life and it helped me massively to forget a lot of shit, issues and problems. So now it’s my beloved companion for life and it did the perfect job to help me carry on pursuing and chasing my dreams together forever myself and my BMW X5 - One Love, One Dream. - She liberated me when my feet were tightened, shackled up and chained in one place and granted me freedom of movement and allowed me to explore more grounds and landscapes ***# … You may find some spelling mistakes due to software issues in my iPad, but not by me personally... well I got used to this also, but the brightest side is that I am extremely happy and satisfied the way I am now.. Thanks I had to say this even if you think it’s not relevant.

And I've driven more than one or 2 vehicles in my day. But for a hundred thousand freaking dollars those rigs should last like a gdam Toyota or better! I just did the oil thermmostat gaskit ok its under the alternator bracket and seals a hole in the block for the oil to get out to the optional cooler! Its freaking ridiculous ya gdam Baverians! The raduous on that o ring style gasket can't stand up to the heat! Here's the deal its basically a freaking remote!!! You can put it ANYWHERE!!! WHERE DO THEY DECIDE TO PUT IT??? BEHIND THE FREAKING ALTERNATOR BRACKET PLUS PUNCH A HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK ! So its a 5 dollar part and anywhere from 1800 to 2200 to have a shop do it! Why you ask....there is like 7 freaking bolts that hold the alt bracket to the block! Yes 7! All of which are a buger in there own way,but the last one in the back is nearly impossible just short of pull in the motor! It took me a month! Of working on it when I could stand it! Cost a grand to rent a Chevy Malibu for the month and I'm still a thousand saved in having shop do it!!!!! Grrr=r BMW SHOULD HAVE TO FIX THERE DESIGN FUCK UPS FOR FREE! RECALL IT! YOU BUILT IT!!!
