I replaced the steering bearings and races on my '92 K75s without the tool and I could never get a tight fit. Nice work!

I don't have a MIG welder but I know from experience that a stick welder will do the same job. It shrinks the bearing race sufficiently to drive it out. In the absence of any sort of welder, what I have done is to grind a 13mm solid round bar to a chisel edge (10mm will do, but I don't think I'd go below that). The outer bearing race has a tiny lip on it when you look down the steering head - patience, the chisel-edge bar and a hammer will drive it out that way. Keep the old outer race because you can use it as a drift to get the new one seated properly.

Hey Chris! Thanks for your K75 videos. I picked up quite a few tips and tricks for working on my own 1990 K75RT. Just replaced the gearbox (mine had a faulty 2nd) and the auxiliary drive shaft unit. This last one was very informational too. Marcel

I am currently looking at an '86 with 34k miles on it and these videos are making me feel a lot more confident about making a decision, thanks. dry ice and iso alcohol gets cold as fuck and will save time freezing small parts. poor mans liquid nitrogen.

Chris, nice video again. The MIG weld technique is great, IF you already have a MIG welder.

Mate you could do the install with a ring slightly smaller than the OD of the bearing race. Then another ring with a shoulder to center it on the steering column and pull it in with all thread / booker rod and a battery drill. It will be straight then

Hi Chris, when I know there's gonna be some bearing work like this job I usually buy a block of dry ice.You bag what you need to cool in a clean plastic bag and set it in a can with the d/ice. It gets them absolutely freezing shrinking cold in no time. Then I hit the race seat with a hot air gun for a while and they just about drop in.An old fart told me this trick years ago.Now I'm an old fart so I'm telling you.Dry ice is cheaper than the spray freeze if you can find it locally.

Hey Chris, thank you very much for your videos. Especially this one. I have a question though, somehow my K75 has another set of bearings in the middle between the top and lower fork bearings. I want to sent my Bertha (the BMW) to the paint shop for a new powdercoat, so I kinda need this bearing to f*ck off. Oh and it turns out that I have a steering lock.

If you tighten it too much the forks will be difficult to turn when the front wheel is pushed to the side. The forks should move without too much assistance yet not flop right over when pushed.

I was surprised at how "notchy" they were when I checked them, because I had just come from a road trip and the thing stayed in the lane nice. I thought all was fine, until I checked them. I did find myself wondering why I got so tired at times. Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe it was the steering head bearings.

Another great video with some usefull advices! You explain to tighten the top-collar if it's possible to move the fork back and forth, but how do you know that collar isn't too tight? I imagine those bearings will wear excessively when tightened too much... Is i just a matter of starting loose and tightening just too the point where he play goes away, or is there an actual trick/test to check if that collar isn't overly tight? Thanks, Isabelle

Hi Chris. Any chance that you recall the other model with the "backwards" front wheel installation? Was it something specific to do with ABS models? About to get the tires changed on my 85 K100, and want to make of note of it to the mechanic one way or the other.

I did tried 2 different BMW shops to fix my 1200 GS 2006 (pistons in line) 4 times . It charged me 4 K dollars after the warranty expired. They blamed the Oxygenist sensor and replaced 2 times my pipe, for a loose power and died like a gasoline problem. They did replace my battery twice, but after 2 months later it failed again.. my BMW has bean garaged from the last repairs in 2008 until today. My "new" bike started having problems almost at six months from buying it at the store. They kept fixing it until the warranty ended. After that I had to pay 4K as described, trying to fix it. You are to far from me. I live in Ontario Ca. I don't trust anymore in the BMW Mechanic shops at all. Please if you recommend any one near L.A or san Bernandino county in CA please notify me. I would really reallly appreciate it.

Are you sure you are getting a good ground with the O2 sensor? These bikes are know for having some grounding problems. Try different places to ground any ground wire involved. They will not run or will run like crap, acting like it's running out of gas, if the ground isn't right. It happened to me, when I bought an O2 manipulator.

Chris, I just did this today. It worked. Used old races and it worked well because the races do actually go down below flush, though at first it was like holding a jig saw puzzle together. If I was serious about making a tool, I would get stuff welded together. It really did torque down nice once it all was in place, and it bottomed things out real nice.

I just called a local ice place near here. It's $10 for 10# (minimum purchase). Seems a little pricey just for one job. I think I would just try bagging the item and sticking it in the freezer.
