The R850R does NOT have carburettors - it has electronic fuel injection, just with a manual choke. that's not a choke in the true sense, but the choke lever just opens the throttles slightly for cold starting. All of the 4 valve Oilhead models were fuel injected from when they first appeared in the early 1990's. The 259 Boxer engine is a very reliable, bullet proof design. The 850 cc may be down on power slightly, compared to the 1100 and 1150 versions but the 850 is smoother with less vibration, and is freer revving

My ex’s father had one of these and we switched occasionally so he could ride my 2100VTX and I could ride his BMW I enjoyed it very much when we swapped for a chance and so did he….spot on talking about used bikes there are very many and very good deals sir !!!! 😀😀👍👍

Great review of a good honest solid motorcycle, no frills, just gets on with the job and what a lovely example you found. They may not be the fastest but these days there are so few places left in the UK where you can go faster than the speed limit excess power can be more of a frustration than a benefit and as long as it has enough shove to pass cars then what more do you need ?

Good video, I have a BMW 850r and love it. It is actually fuel injected, or mine is anyway. I had a couple issues when I bought it and it needed a bit of TLC but it's looking good now. I had to change the paralever bearings to which I made a video on. Anyhow you explained the bike well🏍️👌📹

It is truly a classic I feal, mine was carb as it was a 1998, its easier to deal with but I just am a lazy biker, efi all the way lol

@@Bykersam OK, yes mines a 98 too. They look like carbs but they are throttle body's on each side and have the injecters in the top. It's easy to confuse them as carbs. Hence the choke isn't actually a choke, it increases the pull on the right cylinder throttle body to increase the revs on that side. Dosent matter, it was a good review., top notch nick your bike was 👍

Best bike I ever had, rode over 25,000 miles in South Africa. Unpaved mountain passes, Sani Pass several times. A lower diff ratio than the 1100 so had great took and would accelerate up any hill at 80MPH. I would love to find another as clean as yours.

That's a nice specimen! I bought my neighbors 1996 R850R that had 8k miles on it! It's near mint and came with panniers and Givi top case along with an Aerostitch riding suit that happened to fit me. I've done a few upgrades and required maintenance to it as required. I love it. It's a bike I want to ride as much as I have time for.

I just bought the same bike with only 8400 miles on it.

Great work. The front is really in line with 'Chips' that we watched a long time ago, but this stands out and it is more of a good think. I remember this model from my youth. Keep doing like this.

I have the opportunity of buying a 2001 version of one of these and wanted to look up some reviews first. Great review, honest and to the point. Just like the bike! I'm not looking for the fastest thing out there just something that can munch away on the miles commuting to work and back again.

Much as I love the idea of a r1150gs, this makes way more sense for everyday use. It's a lot lighter,I doubt many people would notice it has 70bhp as opposed to the 11/1150gs 90/95 bhp. Top speed is only 5mph down and .3 second worse off on the quarter mile,compared to the r1100r. Midrange grunt is where it's at for me,I drive diesel cars as I hate revvy petrols. Yet more weight can be shed 21lb to be exact just by swapping out the heavy exhaust for an aftermarket one. I think I've convinced myself now. Looks wise it reminds me of my boxer dog,so ugly I love it😍

I saw one of these bikes for sale locally recently. I had a little think about buying it as it was a good price. I finally decided against it as having 2 big bikes is really not sensible. You end up riding one as it just needs a run out when you really want to ride the other one. I do love the bike though. Nice review. Take care.
