Now, here's a review that's going to polarise opinion! Traditionally, adventure bikes are large, heavy, complex and powerful. But recently there has been a move to smaller bikes in the class and we here at the Bike Show think that this is definitely a Good Thing. We previously looked at offerings from Kawasaki and Honda but this is the one we've really been waiting to get our hands on; BMW's G310GS. Harry got to ride it first and came away very impressed. He's taken a lot of flak for his opinion but he's sticking to it. So, cue the movie and the abuse!

Far too many people (and companies) have forgotten that simplicity IS a virtue, and *not* a drawback.
Finally, some real world truth about dual sport-multi terrain bikes. The lighter the better!!

In the 90s I always thought adventure bikes would get lighter as we get new alloys and polymers in the future. I was wrong. Look at Yamaha: /1980 XT500 - 150 kg/ 1990 XT600- 160kg/ 2000 XT660R - 170 kg/ 2010 XTZ660 180 kg/ 2019 XTZ 700 - 200 kg. If the 310GS would be a bit bigger it would be the perfect replacement for my old XT660R.

That is so true. But this Bike is too early smarter for Indian and probably asian market. We Indians are just mad we just think by heart not by brain until its a decade.

@@DashRendar308 Brands do not even try to make the bikes lighter. I think ... because heavy bikes simply SELL better. You develop a top notch high end hi tech light full-of-technology balanced bike that beats all competition and on top of that you deliver it for a reasonable price, but in the showroom the attention is drawn by the even heavier, even bigger, even more powerful bull bike, and people pay just a lot more for it as gladly, just because they can. They want the biggest, the heaviest, the most powerful one.

Just bought one as a weekend adventurer. Compared to my 2017 Africa Twin which I use for more serious Touring, this is perfect for blatting round the lanes and having fun without ever feeling like you're gonna get yourself into something you can't get out of! Very characterful and fun bike.

I agree, having ridden a Honda CBR250 from 11'-13' that small bikes can be lots of fun. I currently ride a '15 ninja 650 but I'm considering this bike as a second ride. Keep the videos rolling gentlemen!
I love how Harry gets to the practicality of a bike. As long as a bike suits a particular market and does what it is supposed to do with perfection all other stuff like comparisons and extra electronics and jazz become background noise. 10 ON 10 to this review. I'm going to buy this bike

Hey gents! Just a quick note to thank you all, and a shout out to Harry for one of the finest and most personal bike reviews in a very long while. What I like best about your channel is that it is so personal. I never feel like there is a sales pitch buried in one of your episodes. I loved the route choice for this video because it fit so well with where the motorcycle is targeted towards. I was not clear on the size, but learning that Harry is over 6', although considerably leaner than I gave me a better sense of the bike. Brilliant! Best wishes from Canada
What a fantastic period in motorcycling history we live in. We also have the middle weights coming in the new KTM 790 adventure R and the Yamaha T7. Due within a year I believe. Great review!
Bravo Guys (Harry specifically for touting the G310)! You have made your point very clearly. I will never look at a G310 the same again; now, it will be with more respect and curiosity.
I did a test ride here in Brazil and I agree with everything you said. After that I was completely in love with the G310GS.
I agree….I’m not even looking for a new bike, but yet I cannot stop looking at this little BMW. If only Rally Raid sold Turn Keys in the States, it might already be in my garage.

TheMissendenFlyer Ktm duke 390 ride by wire takes you by surprise if you are not experienced rider. In every gear that bike pull off so brilliantly (although the mileage is like 28-30kmpl but the fun factor makes it up for everything.)In short words that bike is always on adrenaline. Still waiting to ride the bmw 310gs hoping it will be good although recently rode smaller capacity 100cc bike and i felt i was riding a bicycle so light(owner of Royal Enfield Classic) and these lil bikes give a mileage like 80-95kmpl 😂 Would love to see a review by you of those if they are available in the U.K

I have a version 1 Duke 390. To put things in perspective. Wet weight of 154 kg and 43 bhp. New Duke 390 around 10 kgs heavier and the same power. Doesn't feel as explosive as version 1 and dare I say has lost the character inherent in version 1. The 310r is slightly heavier than version one and the adventure is heavier than version 2 of the Duke. Now the most important point the ktms produce 9 bhp more power at the exact same revs. Torque is also slightly more at the same revs for KTM. The ktms will always feel more manic due to this fact and the BMW will be mellower . That is also the image of these brands. KTM s are hairier. Having said that 34 bhp is plenty. 650 twins in the 60s produced that type of power and were considered superbikes but I digress. So KTM hairy BMW slightly less. The Duke 390 does 100 kph in 5.5 s which is bloody quick in the real world.

Excellent review guys. Although I'm not a BMW chap, it's a tempting bike. Small engine, but big bike look and feel.
Bing a smaller rider and owning a 2012 z1000 and 19kx100 I appreciate the Manuverability of lighter bikes...my z weighs about 480 and I couldn't imagine muscling around a mid size adventure bike off road with similar weight....that why I love the characteristics and lower center gravity off these smaller bikes makes you feel comfortable enough to rip the trails open throttle...maybe in the near future will buy some small dual sports or adventure bikes for my wife and i...
I never thought I'd want an adventure bike, much less one with only 30HP but I have to admit, I'm intrigued by this. Great review guys!

I recently bought one and it's ok except the engine is a piece of crap.And isn't the motor the most important part of a MOTOR-cycle ? I am German and after being disappointed with 800gs, 700gs and 310gs I will never buy a BMW again. Had Honda, Kawasaki and KTM before all great. My recommendation: go for a KTM 390 Adventure or any Japanese bike ! BMW is overrated and overpriced.
BMW aren't pushing these as ADV bikes because they're making so much money from the 1200 and they'd be shooting themselves in the foot by suggesting a smaller bike makes more sense (which it does). The truth is that the GS800 is probably their best adventure size overall but they don't make enough profit on it to push it too hard. These little 250-300 are the best size when a journey is purely off-road and/or small roads and doesn't include any Autobahn/Motorway/Freeway at all.

Andrew Mack I have a Yamaha R3 that recently did a 1000km round trip across the Australian Outback at 130km/h in 40 degree heat. They can do highways although in my opinion, a 600cc class bike would be the perfect size for this class of bike.

Yes a 500-650 is probably the best option when highways are involved, but I'm not sure if BMW have anything in that range, so I mentioned the 800 as the best alternative in their line up.

Andrew Mack they used have but not these days. Given that a 500-650 is important to meet certain licensing classes in Australia and Europe, they are missing out there.

BMW just had to enter into this sub-500cc market. KTM with its Duke 390 was killing this segment. Now Honda will be replacing their old dated looking CB300F with a newly restyled CB300R; same engine but the styling and small tweaks is what will draw people in. Especially new riders (like me). I loved the G310R, but when I saw the GS version I fell in like all over again. The G310R like most naked bikes are upright, this G310GS is even more upright in its riding position and I like that better.

Owning a BMW 800 series motorcycle which I use for touring, this is the bike you can really use on the trail and not worry about being crushed by the weight or dropping it. It is meant to be fun and I hope BMW continues this philosophy across their motorcar range.
I have considered an adventure bike for a while now but the cost and size plus power can be intimidating plus I just saw a guy doing a world tour on a pizza delivery bike. This is perfect!

I watched this video and the discussion that followed. I also watched other videos reviewing this bike. It is amazing the contrast between other reviews and this one you did.. While your 10/10 rating is all well and good, it paints a picture of a flawless “perfection”. In other words. All praise and no issues at all. Others that rate this BMW were far more critical. Comments like: lacks power, squishy suspension, at 100kph the bike vibrates at the foot pegs and handlebars, the geometry between the rider and handlebars was uncomfortable when the rider needed to stand on the foot pegs. A set of risers would be needed, the bike had average handling. The only good comment was it seemed to be best suited for Urban riding.I am a BMW owner and have 2015 R1200GSA. Even my bike has its issues. Quite honestly your review was just one long advert for BMW similar to an “Infomercial” as they are called here in the US. Honestly, I get quite skeptical of any review that is rated 10/10, let alone this G310GS. I don’t believe it to be “A Game Changer” either. Your comments constantly compared this bike to others costing 2-3 times more, not exactly an even comparison. One good thing, I really enjoyed the route you took, the road was great and the views spectacular in spite of the slanted review.

I like bmw too, but look at the versys300. Infinitely better bike than this.

It's not lacking power, it's a 300cc!!!It's suspension can be upgraded with Ralley Raid's, and it's light and easy to move around and upfront is in the budjet bike and fun division. Why would anyone compare a 300cc to a 24000million cc power train? or a light duty dual sport with a ktm 690? All the bikes offered these days are all great bikes. Just measure three Es 1) your ergonomics 2) your rider's expectations 3) your economics. Enjoyed the video ride too.
true, it's aspirational here in India.. coz BMWs cost almost 50% more here than in the west.. some times it's even 100%, you know.. but the town where I live, you can still see BMWs, the Audis, the Mercs, et all in hoardes.. one thing that you failed to appreciate is that BMW is launching this adventure bike here not just because we have bad roads, but we have a thriving road trip adventure junkie community that goes on longer road trips that you guys could imagine in the most hostile of places! we have couple folks who did a 90k road trip across the globe, then another group of 4 that did a 50k.. then there are many who have done "world tours".. heck, even our chicks are doing 27k km "solo" road trips.. there are countless, countless communities going on cross-country road trips throughout the country, every time.. and India is a big country.. hope the west appreciates we can be adventurous too that is why the bike makes sense here!

how is the power I have an xr650L it says 33hp is it really the same hp as my honda??

I'm in America, and I want one. I agree with your conclusion.
I’m in the USA, I’ve ridden husky 250s, Honda 500s and a grom as adventure bikes. The grom was my favorite, super lightweight and I can carry a tie down strap as a come along in case I get stuck. I’m looking at getting a gas gas contact es or a 310 as my next bike. It’s way more fun to ride a slow bike to it’s limits than to ride a fast bike slow.
I’ve been a 1250 GS rider for years, but just added a 310 to my garage for all the reasons you mentioned. The 1250 is great, but off road it’s generally a chore to ride - just too heavy and I’m always worried that I’m going to inflict expensive damage with a drop. My 310 on the other hand makes off road fun for a change, and if I drop it while trying a tough trail it’s easy to pick up and cheap to repair. A great place to start as a new rider and a really fun little ride even for more experienced folks off road. Yes the KTM 390 is better to ride, but unlike the KTM my little GS isn’t going to break down and leave me stranded.

A long long time ago when I was in high school I had a Honda XL360 we called them enduro's back then I had a blast on that bike, in North West Arizona, I miss going off road a tootling around and seeing the wilderness, when I returned to biking this year at age 57 I got an LS650 and sometimes group ride, but it isn't my cup of tea, have been looking at scramblers and they are typically in the 950-1200cc range and I was thinking why on God's green earth would anyone want that monstrosity on the trails I had been looking at the Honda CB500X and thought that might be ok seems a bit tall in the seat, stumbled on this and it caused me to raise an eyebrow and go hmmm .

Good review. This bike isn't just for those with limited offroad skills, it's for people who know that big heavy lumps of metal is absolutely what you don't need offroad. I do a fair bit of offroad and weight is my primary concern when selecting a machine that can handle the tough stuff. What I really want is a 500/600cc twin with proper suspension, cush drive, decent ground clearance and rally fairing all for 150kg fully fuelled.....now there's a challenge for BMW

Totally agree. However while waiting for a decent ~600cc to come along ( No Suzuki dr650 dual sports were available here I looked all around Sacramento nobody had anything in stock nor knew when they would have) I opted for the 310.
I have one and agree with this review. Very nice bike. A Hug from Portugal!.

There is nothing funnier ( sadder) than the videos of the big GS's mired in the mud in Mongolia.. ( or with busted frames)... where it takes 3 mean and a mule to get them up again. If you really want to go someplace gnarly.. take a bike you can pick up or crawl out from under alone !

Please can you do a full comparative test between the G310GS, Honda CRF 250 Ralley and Kawasaki Versys X. Not a short day trip but a proper tour show all their strengths and weaknesses for adventure riding, including things like tar/dirt/gravel and luggage capacity as well as fuel range etc. Make a tour from Jhb to Cpt on the back roads.

Sorry, but there is no way I am riding the Honda 250 Rally any further than to the shops and back; too slow, too uncomfortable and too softly sprung; anything over 100kms and you would want to end it all.

The Bike Show. Thanks for your reply. That is exactly my point. So the Honda is really only a toy (albeit a brilliant one) to be used on a day outing but what about the other two or, when it arrives, the Suziki V-Strom 250. The purpose of these smaller adventure bikes is more than just a daily commuter. I honestly believe I'm not the only person who is interested in seeing how they all would cope on a longer journey without any modifications other than factory fitted options. Hell I would join you for the ride as I believe the point of them is to get more of us "regular okes" out there without breaking the bank so to speak. Anything that can sit at 110km/h to 120km/h all day is a genuinely intriguing travel option. Speed is not everything.

I didn’t think I’d like this but I do. Bikes like this are almost perfect for every day riding. Ride it to work, then act the maggot on a trail on the weekend. Hopefully it doesn’t have the quality and reliability issues that Indian built Harleys and KTMs do.

Harley built anywhere has reliability issue.... harley is the royal enfield of US... :) Pay attention to bikers dying on expensive bikes in india and you will see it will be a harley.. may be its the attitude of people who buy it or the bike itself is an issue !!

how is the power in low rpm, it says 34hp at 9700rpm not good off road. my honda 650 gets the same hp but at 90% of torque at 3000rpm
I totally dont agree about the brakes. We have lots of bikes here in India with sharp as hell brakes.. Case in point Duke390... Awesome video!!!

I think if you try the SWM SuperDual you will arrive more or less with the same results as you obtained to the G310 GS, in therms of easy of use, height and other benefits to Adventure purposes...even if the SWM is a 600cc
Sold me on getting one I want something I can take off the main road at times lightly and relax from traffic. When I’m in the mood to ride on the street and kick back I’ll bring the Kawi Vulcan 650S out.
I cdnt agree with you more. Its a step in the right direction. Ive been on the two of the highest motor able roads in the world over 18000 feet on a puny 100 cc , 11 bhp bike with a pillion rider, and that was in early 90s. The heavy bikes are a huge problem when going to those places.. Just watch any videos of kaza, spiti leh drives and you will see the challenge it is taking heavy bikes. Heck i remember a guy took a 60 cc moped to the highest motorable road Khardungla. The biggest advantage of lighter bikes i felt was on the way when there was a massive landslide and the road was blocked everyone waiting for bulldozer.. Me and my pillion we just sort of lifted and went across the landslide !! And you dont want to be stuck in such terrain n temperature on a bike. I have friends who own r1200, ducati and so on.. but the speed regulation is 120 is usually everyone goes at 100 cos of the mixed traffic in asia. This is the bike for me.. BMW has started sending it to the dealers here in India.

Absolutely .. weighs less than himalayan and is more powerful .. will definitely be more reliable than enfield.. Ive seen many a royal enfield with broken cranks somewhere close to mountain passes on leh route. That will never happen to a bmw. how ever you will have to see the price justification.. if the price difference does not matter to you then bmw for sure.. if price matters then..

With the offroad helmet, surely the wind sound was so loud even with 'BMW' without windshield.
The ADV ,market needs to get smaller is CCs. I had a 1200 and loved it on the road but not so much off. I'm on an 800 Tiger now and love it. I wish Triumph would put the new Street 3 765 in it and take another 50lbs off the bike. It would be perfect for all roads for all capable mortals then.
Could be nice long-term punishment bike for Don, after Ducati V4 case. )

Great review, many thanks. I'm currently on an Xmax 125 for my daily commute but looking to do my bike test later this year. This 310 GS is on my list. What do you think of it as an urban commuter? A mix of surfaces plus some dual carriage way, and of course, city grind. The GS could be a good solution?
The headlights seem to vibrate a lot I asked to some owners and they said the same too

What About low rev torque? Is this bike can climb hills easily with luggage as people r saying that this bike lags low rev torque as compared to royal enfileds!

Hi, I liked the review of the G310 GS a lot, but I'm need to decide betwen the bmw and what I think is a better buying option, the Honda CB500X, because it's a little bit mor expensive but you get much more bike (at least it's what I think). Can you give me your opinion betwen this two great bikes? or if there is a better choise too. Thanks!

Honda is about 198 kgs wet so if you want something light,go with g310gs or else cb500x is better as it has better cruising speeds

I also like the bike. Handling, comfort for tall riders with option for seat height, the light weight, the luggage rack, wich is rare on motorbikes today. I have one big complaint. Under the immense, bombastic plastics in the front there is a small 11-litre fuel tank. The little Yamaha ys125 has a 14 litre fuel tank, and so is a more honest bike. The plastic bonanza make it very hard to acess electric wiring and headlamp bulb.
Spot on about the electronics. You don’t need them necessarily. With so much electronics you are not riding the bike anymore.

Twas not long ago when a 650 was a big machine, todays machines are heavy and lumbering by comparison. Well done BMW.

Totally agree...the engine hp went beserk- we secretly blamed the american market for this.
The problem of taking out the Gs 310 from the city is the highway riding for long distances, not enough over taking power. Uphill enough said. Great bike for what's its made a city style icon. Also this bike isn't for the heavier rider it shows up the brakes and suspension.
If it's meant mainly for the Indian and Asian market, why is BMW not launching it there? They've launched it all around the world

Raw naq service Network is the 1st thing to look before launching the bike anywhere and BMW is working on it with TVS. The final dates have been declared by the company which is in mid 2018.

It is here in Thailand where I live. I'm debating purchasing this or the cb500x. I've ridden them both, and think this would be better because I'm often in the mountains on dirt roads that can get pretty bad. The Honda is kind of heavy for that. On the other hand, I really like the engine and 2 cylinders of the Honda as opposed to the thumper in the BMW, and the fact that a passenger is much more comfortable on the Honda. Hard decision for me.

Bmw was ahead of its time and should relaunch G450X Challenge; but with long service intervals and G650 X Challenge 156 kg / 344 lbs with Ohlins suspension.
Do a 750 version with a shaft drive too both wheels.
Great bike review..but...I think I'll wait for the KTM 390 adventure..!
It's made by TVS and BMW collaboration yet we have been deprived from owning such a bike in India. South eastern countries these bikes have been launched example Malaysia, South Africa etc we had a glimpse in Auto Expo2018 without any launch promises.

That's a great pity; I think this bike would be perfect for India. I would be very surprised if BMW did not, at some point, introduce the bike to the market there.
How do you compare with Kawasaki Versys 300x?

Are those Kulcha riding pants any good ? ?
I get it. This bike is less expensive and it handles well in the dirt. We can all agree that no bike can be perfect for every application. I live in Canada and I tour with my wife. Short rides are 3,000 kms and long rides are 10,000 kms+. We need to carry gear, have some measure of protection against the cold, and the fuel capacity to make 350 kms between stops. During the work week, I need a commuter that can hold my helmet during stops and a GPS to help navigate the city. The R1200GS is the best-suited bike for me.
USD shocks for off-road? Isn't that a big no-no? How tall is Harry?
It's fly fishing rather than a deep-sea trolling rig. It's all finesse and technique - you can't just winch it in with power. I have a Tiger Explorer 1200 and a G310GS, and the GS is just a lot more fun..
Guys would be great if your check the honda cb400x as well.. perhaps pitch them against each other too.
This show needs a subscription service for over countries. I'd pay $2US per episode for this or an equivalent per episode price for a subscription.

I really wish these reviews would take adventure bikes on something rougher than hard-packed dirt roads. He didn't even stand up on the bike. That tells me nothing of the off road capabilities of a bike like this.

i won this bike and lol i agree with him. i use every bit of power out of it top speed is 109mph 1-3 gear are most fun.
But why didn’t they push the tft into all of there bikes
it will be spot on if BMW can make this bike easily assemble to the G310R where most riders will use as commute and then if needed for off-road then push the button and walla G310 GS that's where the market
