BMW G310GS vs. F800GS vs. R1200GS Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the launch of the new G310GS, BMW has opened up adventure riding to a whole new audience but how does the baby GS stack up against its bigger brothers, the F800GS Adventure and the R1200GS? Mat, Don and Harry come up with some simple tests to find out.

Ok, that brings back memories! Was riding my 2015 F800GSA off road, crossing a very cold, fairly swift creek about 8' wide, and about 3' deep. I hit a boulder and in slow motion i went down. Try as i could, I could not raise it against the swift creek. Im 200 lbs, 6'0, have been riding over 40 years, never had problems, but the swift cold creek there was no way i could lift it. Fortunatly my son was with me, saw what happened and came back and saved my ass! My point, lifting it on a grass field is one thing, lifting it with the elements against you is another!

Fun stuff! The absolute truth is after about the 5th time I dropped my old Vstrom when off road by myself, I quickly decided a much LIGHTER bike was the way to go! After a set of Kenda 784 big block tires, SW Motech crash guard and skid plate, Hepco pannier racks, Pelican 1500 series side cases, Moose Racing windscreen, BMW accessories top case, and more to come, I am pleased to say that the G310GS in my opinion is one SUPERB do everything - go everywhere bike.

:-D If KTM buids a 390 ADV bike, it will take that segment by storm! But look out...……..I can see Kawi putting the Ninja's new 400 powerplant into the X300 changing the model to a X400. Also, for many years Honda has been building the CB500X, and with the Rally Raid stuff on it, it is a real performer!

Having only ridden and owned the DL1000XT, I think something in the 650-850cc range with a twin or triple is the most ideal ADV bikes that can do the dirt really well (21" front wheels, provided). But generally weight is the enemy, the enemy of handling, enemy of comfort, enemy of distance, enemy of picking up a downed bike, enemy of efficiency. There is one aspect that weight is one's friend: high speed traveling on pavement. That's about it.

You need to ride a 1200GS. It will change your mind and that's not me exaggerating or pushing a bike I own. I don't even own one. I sell Suzuki, Ducati, BMW, and Yamaha (HA!🙄) when it comes to Adventure bikes. I own a Multistrada. Given, it's not an Enduro, there's no way the DL, Tenere, or Multi can do what the GS is capable of. The recent switch to the 1250 Shiftcam firmly locks the BMW, again, in the top spot with everybody else looking at each other going WTF!?!?😱🤯

You don’t literally pick it up, you simply back into and it comes up with you. You turn your back to the bike, grab the handle bars and rear grab handles then you squat down put your bum against the seat and step backwards your pressing against the seat picks the bike up. It’s much easier than literally picking it up.

awesome video that everyone should watch before buying your monster 1000cc adventure bike. Take a good look at how and where you will ride. Think your an awesome rider, load up that big bike with gear and get into a crappy spot and then try to pick it up. These guys have no gear and are in the best possible situations. It shows we need more avialable small and mid size adventure bikes for the real dirt goers.

I rode a G310S a few weeks ago when my 1200 GS was in for a service. Compared to the Duke 390 which is the only other bike of similar size and spec I've ridden to the 310, I honestly thought it was a poor effort. It vibrated like anything if you went more than 60mph, there was no room on it, the suspension was rubbish and I think BMW took inspiration from Speedway bikes for the brakes. Sorry, not for me! The 1200 on the other hand, I think is immense and is far and away the best bike I've ever owned and ridden. Anyone who thinks otherwise ought to have a go on one.
