FortNine this is my bike, well 2010 GS. You nailed something that's so hard to explain, it is a tall, heavy dirt bike...that is old man perfect around town. You nearly killed me with the reality vs expectations bit. Beautiful. I have had a chance to get on the AT yet, but the DCT is enticing. Great review

I actually realised even before I bought my 1200 GSa that the 800 GS probably would be a better choice. It is cheaper, nimbler and of course much better to ride off road. However, I hardly ride off road at all and I simply love my 1200. I love it for the range, for the comfortability, the weight when it is windy, the look of it and because of the engine. Yes, the 800 would have been a better choice in many ways but still....

4 year old comment, but this is the exact reason why BMW aren't getting my money. It's an ADV bike. It's gonna get beat up, and it's going to need replacement parts because of it. VStrom will let you take that money and put it to gas or gear and not to bmw.

I agree with you Albe; I also own a 800GSA and every single comment by Ryan hits the nail on the head. Stats are easy to obtain and mentioned in 85% of every video review out there, no-one needs to spend 5 minutes watching a boring ass repeating them all, again. What is more useful is exactly what you'll find in this incredible review. My conclusion is the same, this bikes imperfections cancel out my imperfections almost perfectly - its Bose noise cancellation in an adventure motorcycle. When I want soppy drool all over my bike I'll take the 1200GSA out, but that stuff is nasty and difficult to clean, I much rather prefer people leave me the hell alone and let me enjoy my solitude and silence when I'm on my time.

@@sivvinod3187 I ended up buying a T7 a 2 weeks ago. I've owned at least one of every major type of motorcycle (this is my first adv bike) and it's by far my favorite. I ride it like a big supermoto on the street and a heavy dirtbike off road, and it will still do 90mph on the highway for as long as there's gas in the tank. Love it :D

@@FortNine Great job, like really great job . I've watched like 60 of your videos in last 2 days and they are all story telling beauties of cinematography. I want to get my bike license and here in Europe (Cro) we have A1 (125 cm/11KW), A2 (35 kW), & A (No limit except age min24 or 20 with A2license for 2 years). Since i'm old and lazy i've went straight for A , which means I learn on bike of min 600 cm3 & 40kw which is hard to control . I already leaned it stopping, as it was 240kg Aprilia Shiver which i found very hard to steer and violent on gas. In the meantime i broke arm in totally unrelated accident and now I'm checking all the cool instructional videos (mostly yours) that will help me master bike riding more then my instructor . Thanks for that . What i didn't check is how to service bikes , like you have what to service and when but it would be really interesting to see details of changing tire , replacing chain, and so on... but on level of detail you do it , minimal effective tools ( as well to have with you in case of emergency fix on long roads) , what to watch out when positioning and why. Personally I plan to buy smaller used bike (eg.Versys-X 300) and do practice on it , getting feel for road and cornering , and then something like this 800GSA to travel the world (midlife crisis) for few months so doing tire swap or some other basic fixes you came up to with your driving history would be much appreciated . All the best in future and safe driving .

Always great watching your videos. As an owner of a KTM 950 and F800GSA, I can tell you the 800 is not a bad bike. An aftermarket windscreen like the Puig, Andreani fork cartridges, and a better seat will make your ride so much better.

Your videos that include the v-strom 1000 are helping me a bunch, I know that wasn't the point on this vid but it's good to see that there are more dirt worthy bikes that aren't $15k us dollars. I am in the process of getting myself a 2014 v-strom 1000 and I think now more than ever I'm not changing my mind to anything else. Me having a motocross bike means my on road bike doesn't have to take me that far off-road. So for me I think the v-strom will be perfect.

When this video came out, I'd already enjoyed my GS800 for over a year, but was still open to the idea of an 'upgrade'. Now it's 2022, I've tried every competitor from Honda, Yamaha, KTM and even BMW (including the 850s and 900s) and I'm still riding my '13 GS800. Admittedly I upgraded the fork springs, fitted a spicy end can, and have 17" wheels for summer tarmac/track duty, but it's a very boring, very dull, very competent motorcycle that seems impossible for me to replace. Love/hate/love.

I’m still in the same place - although I also have a rear shock upgrade. Never stop being told I should buy an KTM890adv by friends and I’ve tried them loads of times, along with the T7 and I just can’t see why I would change? My 800gs just keeps plodding along, doing its thing never making a fuss. It gets abused on the trails and left caked in mud for weeks and rarely misses a beat or fails to start. It gets up all the technical sections the others do and cruises happily on the tarmac in between.

Ryan, another wonderfully watchable movie. I don't ride motorbikes yet, though I plan to (Rookie to Rider this year hopefully). I'm not sure if the reality will match up to the expectations but in the meantime I'm really enjoying your narrative, personable and wholly original content - and that's a very qualified statement as I watch a huge amount of motorbike videos. Keep them coming and thank you. (there a significant time-gap between this comment and publish date for the film above, I wonder of your thoughts on the latest f850 gs? And the 750?) Hope Vancouver worked out, it seems so...:-)

Depends how you see power. The 800 twin has more torque. And even revs lower at highway speed. Than the triple. There isn't anything to really say about the 800 rotax engine it's completlly sole less probably the most boring engine ever.

Watched the video a number of times, bought a 2015 GSA in 2018 lightly used, put 5,000 miles on it, 60/40 road dirt. Watched the video again to confirm my experience. Am spending New Year Day watching videos on upgrading fork springs, been in touch with Ted Porter Beemer Shop on choice of rear shock upgrade this winter. Will be taking it from Cape Cod to the Dempster Highway this summer. I lIke it more than my riding partner’s 2008 R1200 GSA. And of course I very much like the F9 videos. Well done.

I'm in love with my GS, but there's just some things from the NC that I miss dearly, namely that frunk (front trunk). Nothing beat being able to store your helmet there and your jacket in a top case in the summer and being free of gear when you reached your destination!

Great review Ryan. I have had my GSA 800 now for 3 years touring all over Europe off road and trail riding and agree with everything. I have tested most other bikes but still can't find anything to come close to it. including the New GS 850 which I found faster but sounds like a bag of spanners. the 1200's are far to big for serious off road or trail riding so I will keep this bike for the forcible future. Cheers Mick (Motoadventure Man)

Have you test ridden the 850? I have a regular 2016 F800 and see no reason to want to change it at all! I love my bike. It just hit 25,000 miles and I'm hoping to push it well past the 100k mark. Part of me wishes I went with the GSA for the larger fuel tank, but I suppose I can always remedy that with a Camel Tank and still retain a lighter weight.
