50sKid, this 80sKid really appreciates your videos! I've just recently purchased a '00 323i Touring and I've learned a lot watching your channel. I'm not totally new to wrenching on cars but its always nice to see it done right before attempting it myself. Next weekend I'm starting with the basics. Oil change, Plugs, Filters.

In case anyone asks, tightening torque for those plugs is 50 ft lbs (70Nm) btw. i've seen recommended fluid change interval to be 30000 miles (or 3 years)

Great video with smart tips. I like how you were trying to control the drain of the fluid and then realized it's better to take out the fill plug. Other videos would just cut through these details, but you did not. Very appreciative. I might add that I would pump some new fluid through the fill hole and let it drain before putting back the drain plug, this is just to make sure I pushed more old fluid out. I noticed you did not have any fluid to waste since you have the exact amount for a full fill.

Also in a pinch, if you don't have the right size allen you can use a bolt with a 14mm head with two nuts run down on it locked together. Use the appropriate wrench on the inner nut to open and the outer to tighten her back up. As always, another good clip!

Jason, as an FYI, even if the diff plugs are unable to be loosened by the Allen socket (or torx as on M3) there is a way to still get the plugs out and it feels great. Get a cold chisel and 2 lb hammer. Use the chisel to get a "bite" on the flange of the plug and pound away. Guaranteed to work. Of course, be sure you have new replacement plugs and washers standing by. (For M3 diff fluid change, new plugs are part of the normal service.)

i really enjoy your great videos this one now it shows a very simple diff svc procedure on a very professional level ✅ 💧whenever i svc a diff, on top of it there's a vent valve that over time may become clogged from debris or dust picked from the road/ weather elements; i usually disconnect it, wash it with brake cleaner or solvent, blow some pressurized air through it, and when reconnecting it i wrap its thread with teflon tape or teflon paste - but not toward its end that may become another clogging agent instead 👀 also, there are times when a new brass or copper gasket or washer couldn't be located with the exact inner hole to fit your application; what i do is to grind their outside faces against a file enough to get it some how flat but not much, and then roll up teflon tape all the way next to the head of the drain plug, then i place the gasket on top of it and voila - when the plug is thightened, the teflon will slip betwen the gasket and the thread forming a sound sealed feature cheers 👋

Really like your videos. Not sure if anyone has made this comment but my method of jacking up the car is go the rear jack pads. Oddly enough from the rear you'll end up lifting one side of the car so I can get the front up by lifting the rear. From there you can use the metal plate in the back (which is what I do) or the point where the wishbone and the strut come together on each side.

Generally, taking the fill plug out first is ideal, just to make sure the thing even comes off and you're not left with an empty diff lol. You should replaced the washers on the fill and drain plugs as well.

I believe what you (and many others) refer to as a "skid plate" is properly known as a "shear plate". It is an integral part of the front suspension and subframe. Severe damage to the front structure can result from leaving this shear plate off and driving the car hard. (You can drive around the garage, and around the block with it off, but don't push your luck.) This is quite unlike a skid plate which is just a bolt-on shield and not an integral part of the frame or suspension.

Make sure it`s not only synthetic, but also GL-5 standart! 75W90 for almost every BMW open differential and 75W140 for LSD`s for M`s. Oh..., and don`t use transmission oil with the same viscosity, because the additives in it (for the synchronisers in the gearbox to work properly) will cause problems in your diff.

I have an E46 316i from 2004 with 102k miles. When I change from first to second gear it sometimes makes a rumbling noise and it does this when shifting from 2nd to 3rd but just a small sound. I remember that my dad's X3 had some issues when turning (it made this clonking sound) and sometimes it made a weird sound when changing gears. He changed his diff oil and it all went away. Since the X3 is based on the E46 platform, would changing my diff oil get rid of this issue ?

Just did this on my 2005 330i zhp, your fluid is definitely super dirty and dark! Mine looked very clean by comparison, must have been done in the recent past. Also mine has a green o-ring on the inside edge of the fill and drain plug. Maybe they stopped using crush washers at a certain model year?

Picking up a 2003 convertible e46 that's in really really good condition OTHER than a tiny leak on the diff.. Probably going to change the fluid when I pick it up, then monitor the issue for a while. Not too sure whether it's coming from the axle points or where the driveshaft connects (no idea about the actual names of those I apologise). Would it be worth just keeping an eye on it and getting the leak fixed at a later point, or will the leak be a really serious issue? Thanks!

50sKid... please help! @ 1:35 in the video, I notice that your Pittsburg jack's handle can go down all the way parallel to the floor (and even slightly lower). I have just purchased a new, ultra low profile liftmaster 3 ton jack. It looks very similar to yours... but the arm/handle can't go nearly as low as yours (mine goes maybe 10-15 degree angle from the floor). I've done so much research into this and I cannot find anything that specifies how low the handle is suppose to go, and no one talks about it online. Did your Pittsburg jack just come like that? Or did you have to bleed the lines to allow for that kind of travel? I am heavily considering buying your model floor jack and selling mine simply because the handle on mine cant get that low to the ground. It makes accessing the rear jack point impossible when the front is already lifted. BTW I absolutely love your videos, they have helped me become more confident in working on my E46;)

Do not lift at the jack pad without using the jack pad adapter from Amazon ($8.00) as the jack pad can either be ruined/damaged or fail completely causing the car to potentially fall. Once you jack car using that jack pad adapter, then immediately place a couple jack stands under frame as shown in this video. Never use jack alone without jack stands.
