    Ryan, you showed the tool to remove/replace the drain & fill plugs and questioned their description. I just bought that set and it arrived yesterday from Amazon. That is a "Sunex #2637, 1/2" Drive Impact Hex Driver>" It's a hex socket tool. I don't know about prices when you posted this but today it's about $100 for an SAE/Metric 20 piece set. They look like they're very well made... time will tell. I really appreciate the effort you've put into these videos. I had an E39 530i & an E39 540i (certainly wish one could have been an M5!). The current buggy in the yard is an 2001 E46 330xi. Your videos are informative and the details are clearly presented. Thanks.

    @@E39Source You're certainly welcome, from another old San Diego resident. I was home ported at 32nd St. Naval Station 5/1969 to 5-1972 and assigned to shore duty out on Point Loma for a couple more years after that. I'm find a lot of contradicting info regarding the differential type. Have you found that the 2001/2002 330xi is an LSD or is it an Open Diff? It appears to matter which type of gear oil you use. I had the gear oil replaced about 100K ago by a local shop but I don't remember the type.

    @@MrGaryGG48 Back when San Diego was a different place! Are you still in town? The 330xi uses an open rear differential, so you won't need the special LSD fluid that simply contains a friction modifier for the LSD clutches.

    @@E39Source No, I left there when an interesting opportunity came along in 1979. My job as a "Senior Systems Technician" for Control Data dried up in SD. They asked me to follow the production line back to Minneapolis and work there. I thanked my manager for the offer but pointed out that they really couldn't tell me much about living in the snow that I hadn't already experienced. He said something like, "...what???" I told him I grew up on a homestead about 20 miles outside of Anchorage, Alaska from the late 1940s through the 1950s and I didn't really care to refresh those memories! ;^) He just laughed and agreed. I took off driving a semi for Global Van Lines all over the country. Totally different field but an interesting series of experiences. I may have to return 2 quarts of Redline 75/90 Synthetic Gear Oil. After reading several conflicting comments I ordered the wrong oil. Is there any problem using the LSD oil in an Open Diff or is it just a bit more expensive? If it isn't harmful to this rear/front end I might just use it instead of wasting more time. The "75/90 SD" apparently is the preferred choice. Thanks Ryan, for your advice.

    @@MrGaryGG48 I don't blame you for not wanting to make the move! I don't think it'd be a problem to use LSD oil in a non-LSD, but you'd never want to use non-LSD fluid in an LSD. Any full synthetic 75w90 gear oil should do the job.

    Hello sir, i have a bmw e46 m3, there is a bold on my oil pan to let out of the oil, and now when i drill it in, it kinda worn, so it is causing oil leak, do u know any product could be good for sealing it? Or do u have any other idea to fix it? I know the expensive way is to replace the oil pan, but it is too expensive

  • @E39Source

    @E39Source

    7 жыл бұрын

    The oil pan is stripped, and needs attention ASAP. Driving with a loose bolt could cause it to fall out, and then your engine would lose it's oil and oil pressure which could destroy it in a matter of seconds. If replacing the oil pan with a new one is too expensive, perhaps try to find a good used one. Or- you can remove it, and then have a machine shop re-tap a larger hole and new bolt for you. That may be the most cost effective. Either way, be sure to replace your oil pan gasket at this time!

    twhitfield510 Thanks for sharing these threads. It looks like the concern would be the differential mount. These cars are getting older, and using the alternative method would be safer. For the sake of inconvenience, however, I have no plans of adopting the new method. I've been lifting my BMWs by the rear differential for years, and most everyone I know does as well. I suppose we'll continue to take the chance.

    Nice topic about jacking by the diff or note. I do not want to sound smart or anything, just wondering - isn't it important to differ between jacking by "the diff" vs. jacking by "the subframe below the diff". At least on e46 there is a huge strong piece of metal onder the diff mounted to the car - where I can see no reason why it would not hold the weight of the car. On the other hand, jacking the car on the differential seems like really a bad idea because it is on rubber bushing mounts, so putting so much weight on it seems like bad idea. What do you think about it? Thanks for the answer.

    Lifetime fill per BMW is 100,000 miles. You should change it every 60-70k miles.
