BMR - Basal Metabolic Rate :
Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. Even when you're at rest, your body needs energy for all its "hidden" functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate - what you might call metabolism. Several factors determine your individual basal metabolism, including:
Your body size and composition: People who are larger or have more muscle burn more calories, even at rest.
Your sex: Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than women of the same age and weight, which means men burn more calories.
Your age: As you get older, the amount of muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight, slowing down calorie burning.
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories you burn as your body performs basic (basal) life-sustaining functions. Commonly also termed as Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is the calories burned if you stayed in bed all day.
BMR Formula:
Men : BMR = ( 10 x weight (kg) ) +( 6.25 x height (cm) ) - ( 5.25 x age (yrs) ) + 5
Women : BMR = ( 10 x weight (kg) ) +( 6.25 x height (cm) ) - ( 5.25 x age (yrs) ) - 161
Someone with a fast metabolism or fast BMR burns a lot of calories even while at rest. If you have a slow metabolism or slow BMR, your body needs fewer calories to keep it going. A fast metabolism does not necessarily lead to thinness. In fact, studies show that people with overweight/obesity often have fast metabolisms. Their bodies need more energy to keep basic body functions going. There are several evidence-based strategies that can help increase your metabolism to support weight management and overall health.
1. Eat plenty of protein at every meal
2. Drink more water
3. Do a high-intensity workout
4. Drink green tea
5. Eat spicy foods
6. Get a good night’s sleep
