These guys are all monster musicians. While John Popper gets most of the hype for his harmonica playing, their original bassist, Bobby Sheehan was out of this world good. He passed in 1999 and the band was never quite the same after he left them. Good bassists are truly the unsung heroes of music.

John Popper is something like one of only 4 harmonica virtuosos on earth. The dude is a legend. I’ve always seen the message of this video as being don’t judge a book by its cover, John standing behind the curtain, while the handsome guy is out onstage pretending to be him.

There's a lot of fun wordplay in the song. Tra-la-la-la-la bombardier this is the pilot speaking and I got some news for you It seems my ship still stands no matter what you drop Pilot and "what you drop" linking back to bombardier. The dier in bombardier being a play on "dear," as in saying "Dear, I got some news for you." The "tra-la-la-la-la bomba" is a reference to the classic rock song La Bamba. And the "I like coffee and I like tea" part links back to the two previous lines... that he'll drink whatever he's served... basically saying not only will he accept whatever's coming, he's fine with whatever it is. It's really quite clever stuff, and it all passes so quickly.

It's actually not so random, it's old music business lingo for execs talking about American and British bands. If you like Coffee you like to take American bands and make them famous, if you like Tea you like British bands. This is saying they will take either. So it's something to do with how the whole sing is about the fakeness of the biz. But hell yea I have to sing that line every time!

John Popper is proof that you don’t need to have a pleasant voice to be an excellent singer. His voice isn’t very good by any objective measurement, but he sings and uses his voice as an instrument extremely well. It does look like they're going to great lengths trying to keep John out of frame, doesn't it? 'four' was their breakout album and I think this was the first video from the album. The first I remember seeing, anyway. I'm sure their handlers were nervous about it.

Makes me happy to know that popper got his weight under control these days.
John Popper is something like one of only 4 harmonica virtuosos on earth. The dude is a legend. I’ve always seen the message of this video as being don’t judge a book by its cover, John standing behind the curtain, while the handsome guy is out onstage pretending to be him.

The video honestly isn't that deep. It's just "Wizard of Oz" with the real band being the man (men) behind the curtain.

Yeah, Popper was considered unattractive by the studio and they wanted to have a thinner, more handsome guy lip sync to his words, so he made this video where he's the Wizard of Oz hiding behind a false frontman.

For those old enough to remember the early days of MTV, the actor playing the club promoter trying to keep the band hidden behind the curtain was Ken Ober, he was the host of MTV's Remote Control game show.

Listen to the whole album and you'll get a better sense of the message being about the industry. The theme shows up in multiple songs on the album.
That literal behind-the-curtain aspect was a brilliant bit of filmmaking for the time.
The whole "Wizard Of Oz" theme is in this video: The band that's onstage is basically doing a "Milli Vanilli" while the real band is behind the curtains doing their performance

Dad and I listened to Blues Traveler when I was little. Taught me to have love for great music. Please listen to their song, "Yours." You don't have to make a reaction vid or anything. Just close your eyes and listen to his beautiful voice.
Every time I hear this group I cannot help but think of the sitcom "Roseanne". They did the music for the show's theme song and appeared in an episode, too.
This was a look behind the curtain, ala The Wizard of Oz, whatever the internal strife in the band. The tension between Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham produced some amazing music in the same vein.
Hook next by blues traveler, excellent song EDIT: he posted the hook live performance on his channel right after this

I saw Blues Traveler at the H.O.R.D.E. festival at the South Park Meadows, Austin, Texas 1995 with so many great bands, including Black Crowes, Morphine, Sheryl Crowe, Ziggy Marley, Wilco, Joan Osborne, and Dave Matthews Band. What a great summer for music.
John Popper is proof that you don’t need to have a pleasant voice to be an excellent singer. His voice isn’t very good by any objective measurement, but he sings and uses his voice as an instrument extremely well. An excellent example of this is “Sweet Pain”, probably one of my top 10 favorite songs ever. Might be heard to find that one on KZread in sufficient quality though.

Lead singer John Popper has a brilliant cameo in Blues Brothers 2. I recommend you see it, if only for his number. I saw this band in a tiny rock festival in rural Wisconsin around 1993. They all were sunburnt, sweating in the sun, and playing their hearts out. An excellent show for H.O.R.D.E. fest.
If there's a better harmonica player than Popper I have never heard of him. Super underrated band.
Jamel, I agree. Most people don't want to hurt anyone so they don't feel comfortable being truthful. They don't realize that they hurt the person more by not being g straight with them.
