Hey Jamel with the recent death of Jim Steinman could you please react to his masterpiece..... Meatloaf - For crying out loud..... Or even better the whole bat out of hell album? (Just don't listen to Dead Ringer for love as it wasn't actually on the original album, it was added many years later). The best way to look at bat out of hell as an album is that the first song (bat out of hell) is someone dying, the other songs are his life flashing before his eyes.....

Its more genius than that actually, the entire song is actually a cover of Pachelbel's Canon (in D major) carefully hidden. and depending on the lyric set (verse 1 to 2, etc) the song lays other ways in which this scenario plays (2nd verse is about politics for example).

@@Ssgtremy Wow. I never noticed that it has the same melody as Pachelbel's Canon, and I used to know how to play some of it on the piano, but after reading your comment, I could hear it in my head. And I just watched David Bennett's video on modern songs that took melodies from classical pieces but this one wasn't mentioned. No wonder I like this so much.

I'm a mom of two sons who have disabilities. Cannot tell you what it does for parents heart and their kids , who are often on the fringes of society due to no fault of their own, when something like this happens in their life and how very very special it is. Well done sir ,well done!

Every time I see this video I stupid cry when he turns his back on the pretty audience to walk over to the handicapped audience and plays just for them, quietly so they can deal with it. And sings quieter and gets right up there with them. John Popper, damn it, this is why we love you.

I was wondering if there was a problem with the recording or his microphone when he went over to sing in front of the handicapped. Now that you've clarified that he was quieter on purpose... wow! Such a thoughtful man, I was choking up during that part.

@@v.j.3029 John Popper has always had a heart. And he's always associated himself with the people society thinks is ugly or not "our class". Have you heard Ugly American? He had a girlfriend who called him her ugly American, and he was ok with that. Damn it John, such a beautiful man.

Glad you reacted the the video I suggested! If you need something to brighten your day this song will do it, and then watching Popper sing to those kids will warm your heart.

I'm an African American woman and I just love the sound of his voice. I first came across him when I saw him singing on the Roseanne show a couple of weeks ago and I was just amazed by his voice. To me, music has no color. I love all kind of music. If it moves me, that's all that matter and this man here moves me with his AMAZING voice, the harmonica solo and playing to those kids.

Priceless what the big fella did for them kids, cheers n tears right there. ~ they didn't forget that anytime soon!

Those kids are from a school called Bridge.. Pearl Jam played for them back in 99.. There's a awesome video on KZread of them playing the song Last Kiss for these same kids.. It's awesome to see how good music can brighten anyone's day..

The Bridge School Benefit was a yearly fundraiser for The Bridge School, a school for kids who had difficulty communicating. The all acoustic show was hosted each year by Neil and Peggy Young. They brought all the kids onstage for the whole show every year.

Yep. I saw Trent restnor there for Bridge school benefit. He played piano and middle school kids played their orchestral instruments. I believe Neil Young played there a bunch. I know Pearl Jam did a couple of times as well as Green Day

Wow. This live version of this song turned me into a blubbering mess, about the time he started singing to those beautiful kids. Their reactions are so wonderful. Love Blues Traveller even more after watching this.

John Popper is an amazing musician! He lost over 200 lbs about 20 years ago after gastric bypass surgery. I saw him ib concert about 10 years ago and he looked great! He's gained some weight back but is nowhere close to the 420 lbs before surgery. Hope he hangs in there for a long time, he's 54 years old now.

The mountains win again is another great Blues Traveler song

John Popper / Blues Traveller - easily one of the more overlooked bands from the 1990s. For me Blues Traveler 4 is as close to a perfect album as there has ever been made. I really truly love every song on it. They have other music but that album for me is absolute genius. Got to love him with the kids.

Lol there’s no “opinion” about it. XD This song is absolutely an indictment of the music industry, and Popper has confirmed that many many times. You read it completely the way he wanted you to. That’s what makes this song so awesome, is he tells you exactly what he’s doing to manipulate the audience into liking the song, and it’s literally impossible not to like. I love it too. :)

This entire song is a meme! Super clever! Even from the start, the hook of the track is canon in D. The lyrics are low key incredible.

Great choice! This was from an annual benefit for The Bridge School in CA... It was co founded by Pegi Young (Mrs. Neil at the time) after their son was born with special needs. There are lots of great music moments from those shows to check out but what I'd love to see your reaction to is the lead singer John Popper & Ziggy Marley doing "No Woman, No Cry" at Red Rocks...it's on another level.

The hook in "Hook" is actually a reworked version of the main melody from a nearly 400 year old Baroque composition called Pachelbel's Canon. They used it because they wanted to prove that a hook is a hook, period, no matter when it's from.

Such an Amazing song, So reminds me of the good times in college and in the 90s. I worked in the DD community and special Olympics for 10years and seeing John Popper perform to those kids was very touching. Keep up the good work brother.

A little nutty though...

One of the BIG hooks in this song is the chord progression itself. Not that this song is unique in this fact, but it was deliberate, and part of the message of the song, to make the chord progression the same as Cannon in D by Pachabel. The rest of the song is rote, canned pop riffs and progression and the lyrics satirically suggest that hooks, beats and riffs are all that matter. All in all, it's a commentary on how pop music is derivative and manufactured. This song made it to the top 10 and thusly validated it's careful and deliberate construction. The only thing truly unique about this song is Popper's harmonica solo. And perhaps that was also deliberate... maybe a way of him telling us he knows he's better than these tricks. That man is legend!

Growing up I always thought he was saying “the heart brings you back”. I thought he was saying that no matter how jaded you might become, that you once had a good pure heart, and that’s where you can be again. I would hush people as they corrected me at karaoke. I eventually got it. But I still sing it my way, lol.

Gotta love pachbels canon ... A piece of classical music that's been used to create hundreds of songs in rock, country, blues, pop. Then u slap in a catchy hook and u got a hit lol

John Popper will always be a great memory from my childhood and definitely one the greatest harmonica players ever. His voice is amazing.

I forgot about this band completely. I only know a few of their songs, but the singer really does have a wonderful voice. They remind me a bit of Dave Matthew’s Band, who are great in live performances. If you haven’t reacted to them yet, I recommend check out Crush, #41, Ants Marching - or really any live song.

That’s so awesome him singing to those kids like that! I’m disabled myself and I would have been so thrilled to see something like that as a kid!

You're right ...this is a band to see live for the best!!!

I saw these guys live in Springville Utah at some city celebration. There were only about 1,000 people there but the band still gave it their all and played a full two set show for those who were lucky enough to be there. I was only about 20 feet from the stage and they were amazing, real musicians. One of my favorite concerts of all time and I have been to hunderds.

Yes! Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Now that is a deep rabbit hole. Anything on the Live Art album is a good starting point.

Jamming to the Grateful Dead has opened you up to a whole genre that’s just as big or bigger than any rock scene that erupted in the ‘90’s. Bands like Blues Traveler,Phish,Widespread Panic ,etc. gained huge followings back then and are still jamming to this day . They don’t care about radio play or anything like that. They do it the hard,old fashioned way: live performances . Congratulations ,you have found the golden treasure in the rock world of music . The legacy of the 1970’s classic rock.

I saw this band for the first time in 1991 in a club in Breckenridge CO. while on a ski vacation. Never heard of them and thought they were so good. A few months later I see they have a song on the charts and thought I was lucky to see them in a small club setting before they got really big. Loved them ever since, great, great band.

I've known about this song pretty much since it was released, but this is the first time I've seen this particular performance of it. The way Popper turned around to play to those kids was amazing!

John Popper is an absolute genius, especially with a harmonica in his hands. I've had tears multiple times dry a lot faster when he's playing. Heck, I don't think there's a bad track out there, that has a good harmonica in it. My college roommate looked and dressed like John Popper, and when we walked out of the theater in Joplin, MO, after seeing Blues Brothers 2000 in theaters (Blues Traveler had a cameo in it), some girls swarmed him screaming, "Blues Traveler!! It's Blues Traveler!!!!"

Glad to see you enjoying some Blues Traveler. They always put me in a good mood; even their lesser songs are still (mostly) entertaining. Another thing I like about them is that I've seen them on big tours to small local cook-out type concerts, and they've ALWAYS put in effort. This show was the Bridge School Benefit, where most artists came in and stripped down to acoutist-only performances. You get some really great and unique performances from these shows, and often from some extremely popular artists of the time. Within the music community, these were some of the shows performers loved most. A good cause mixed with a chance to publicly explore new formats for their tunes, etc. Because many of these shows were a Who's Who of musicians, many a musical friendship was started here.

Being but 6 when this song came out, it was one of the first songs before metal that actually blew me away. I still listen to it today. I’m 32 now. Great tune, man.
