Blue Öyster Cult will return with a mammoth new studio album “The Symbol Remains“ on October 9, 2020. Coming nearly two decades after the release of their last studio album, “Curse of the Hidden Mirror,” the album showcases a band who hasn’t been slowed by the time passed, but simply unphased by it. “The Symbol Remains” is one of the band’s most spirited, diverse, and inspired releases to date.
The album will be available on CD, 2xLP, Limited Edition Color 2xLP, and Digital formats. Pre-order/save HERE: orcd.co/symbolremains
As the old saying goes, “good things come to those who wait” and the 14 songs showcased on "The Symbol Remains" embody that. The BÖC faithful will be delighted given that the band has delivered an extremely inspired album. Ultimately, this sounds like a band looking back at their storied catalog and giving the fans a bit of everything they’ve ever loved about BÖC, while simultaneously continuing to evolve.
Blue Öyster Cult started sessions for the new album in earnest in 2019, bringing songs to the table that had previously been in the works as well as working on new ones. The goal was to craft an album that gives an appropriate portrait of where the band is in the here and now.
"With the song demos emerging for this record, we realized there was as much if not more variety in style and content on this record as any in our history,” tells Eric Bloom "We embraced this and the thing tying all the disparate elements together is the band’s sound and performance."
"The goal was for the new music to stand up to the quality and vitality of our legacy recordings, and I believe we have successfully done that,” adds Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. “Other than that, the sound of our voices and style of our writing and playing can’t help but sound familiar to fans of our work."
“The album title, “The Symbol Remains” comes from a quote of an old Sandy Pearlman lyric, which basically we are using to show that the band is back and still rocking after all these years. To me, it means we’re still here and doing what we do...” explains Eric Bloom.
As fans well know, Bloom and Roeser are the two steadfast members remaining from the “classic" lineup of the band, but Jules Radino, Danny Miranda, and Richie Castellano are all long time members. Their constant touring has truly caused them to gel as a unit and you can hear it in the performances on “The Symbol Remains”. Jules, Danny, and Richie here have left their mark on the 50+ years of Blue Öyster Cult history.
"We wanted to record the current band’s lineup for some time and the result of Jules, Danny, Richie, Eric and myself giving our all on “The Symbol Remains” speaks for itself,” says Buck Dharma.
While the current world situation caused some distress, the band is still very happy with the final result. "The Covid-19 lockdown slowed the completion of the record. We were prevented from traveling and collaborating in person. But luckily we had already done the basic tracks. We resorted to video conferencing and producing each other over the internet. Fortunately, the technology exists at this moment in time to do that. The live performance cancellations gave us a little more time to carefully consider the finishing touches. We also sent the album out to be mixed by Tom Lord-Alge and we worked together over the internet on that as well,” adds Buck Dharma.
Formed on Long Island at the end of the '60s, Blue Öyster Cult are best known for their massive singles "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Burnin' for You," and "Godzilla." Riff-heavy and head-banging while intelligently hook-laden, the band remains a constant touring presence and as relevant as ever. Pioneering the heavy metal style while providing inspiration to psychedelic jam bands and arena rockers alike, genre-benders Blue Öyster Cult is a widely respected classic rock band with a storied catalog., The band has been covered by everyone from Metallica and HIM to moe, which showcases the wide ranging influence of their music.

Yeah, when I saw their latest concert at a drive-in movie arena (genius) in Connecticut, I wondered who the main new singer was with a very powerful voice to compliment all the band's incredible instrumentation. I thought perhaps he was Eric bloom's son. Glad to know he is Richie Castellano. They are such cool guys to include new blood and keep on going strong as they do and always have done. I met them once a long time ago. They are such great band. Have that NY vibe, just a little vampiric. Too bad the city has been taken over by the undercurrent; ie; demonic rats. Hah!

Some may be suprised that BÖC new album comes with lots of titles with Castellano as lead singer / author / composer, some even might say "this is not "our" BOC !" (as there are always haters and grumblers). I was a bit surprised too in the first look, but in second thought, THAT IS exactly what Blue Öyster Cult is. The band has ever used all the talents of all bandmates, from the very first album and that's precisely one of the things that makes that band so unique. Every former member composed, wrote or sang in at least one album (check "Agents of Fortune" and "Spectres"songs to find out). And they widely use all members to create polyphonic vocals (Golden Age of Leather, and so on). Ritchie is really a great singer, guitarist and that song is probably one of the best in the new album (with Alchemist). He brings some modernity to the band without betraying its original spirit and that's really cool.

Another gem from the new BOC studio album! I’m a long time fan of the band (almost 30 years, seen in many live concerts, met the band several times backstage), and I saw them evolving musically throughout the years. This new song is as beautiful and appealing as the old classics, but at the same time sounds different, refreshing, opening the way to a new era for the band, where the talents of Richie as composer, player and singer are showing in full glory with this great power ballad (check out the lyrics!). It does not sound like the classic BOC tunes, yet to me, is a BOC song. The eerie lyrics, the guitar riffs and the whole “mystery and horror” feeling this song gives to the listener, helped by a clever and perfectly fitting music video, are BOC at their fullest, reminiscent of albums like Specters and Agent of Fortune. The influx of Richie, but also the stunning rhythm section with Danny on bass and Jules on drum (cannot wait to hear his song on the album!), is instrumental in this new period for the band. Kudos to Eric and Don “Buck Dharma” to giving space to the younger talents to give their personal contribution to the songwriting. It’s a great sign of maturity, respect and forward looking, avoiding the risk of falling into writing songs that self-indulge in the past and do not provide to the listener the thrills of discovering something new, like several other classic rock bands had done recently. The 3 songs chosen for the preview so far are a clever mix of what the full album will likely provide. A heavy, fast rock bullet (That Was Me) that enhances Eric Bloom’s vocal talent paired with a killer riff; the easier listening silky guitar melody of Box In My Head, proving, once more, that Buck Dharma is one of the most gifted guitar players in the rock world to date. Both tracks are more aligned with the past BOC sound, and then this superb Tainted Blood, that welcomes the listener to the new stage of BOC soon-to-be, amazing 50 years musical career. Long live BOC!

OMG! Richie has breathed new life into Blue Oyster Cult. His talents as a writer, producer, videographer, vocalist and inspiration for the band is immeasurable. There IS life after death and damned if BOC hasn’t been woke. It’s great to see they’ve given a cameo to Albert Bouchard in another video as well. Bringing the Bouchard Brothers back into the fold (if only for some inspirations and creative endeavors) would be awesome. The current band is great. This is a solid fucking album that gets better with each listen and stands up (and even surpasses) much of their earlier work. Congrats Blue Oyster Cult. RIP Allen Lanier. I’d bet he would be proud.!

Tainted Blood" We danced among the mortals blind to their despair As the sweet scent of certainty fills the midnight air I offer first taste to my love as is our way Tainted blood, she cries and dies, my whole world fades away No one to wipe my bloody tears The life we had for 200 years Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light Do whatever it takes to end this endless night Without her there's nothing for me Make the sign of the cross, wrap me in silver chains Do whatever it takes to end my pain Without her eternity is misery Throughout the many years our lives were oh so sweet But this tainted blood has taken everything from me No place for me within this world, the dance is done No reason to remain, you were the only one No one to wipe my bloody tears The life we had for 200 years Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light Do whatever it takes to end this endless night Without her there's nothing for me Make the sign of the cross, wrap me in silver chains Do whatever it takes to end my pain Without her eternity is misery No one to wipe my bloody tears The life we had for 200 years Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light Do whatever it takes to end this endless night Without her there's nothing for me Make the sign of the cross, wrap me in silver chains Do whatever it takes to end my pain Without her eternity is misery Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light There's nothing, nothing for me Make the sign of the cross, wrap me in silver chains Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light Make the sign of the cross, wrap me in silver chains Put a stake through my heart, throw me out in the light

This would fit in so well on Spectres. It feels like classic Joe Bouchard-style storytelling & dramatic style. Somebody mentioned Nosferatu and I totally feel that. I also kind of am reminded of Vengeance (The Pact) and Wings Wetted Down. They sound different but I feel as if the vibe of the storytelling is the same. I've been a fan of BOC since I was 14 years, now I'm 35, and I am impressed that this band so openly embraces its new members. I've always felt it was so wrong for The Rolling Stones to exclude Darryl Jones as a full member after over a quarter century playing bass with them and counting. In short, I love this.
