Tommy James & The Shondells are an American pop rock/psychedelic rock band from the 60's. They had a lot of great hits such as "Hanky Panky", "Crimson & Clover", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mirage", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Ball Of Fire", "Do Something To Me" & "Crystal Blue Persuasion". When Tommy went solo in the 70's "Draggin' The Line" & "Three Times In Love" were hits for him.

Thank you this beautiful classic. Remember listening to this song on the old AM, radio stations in the day. Still one of the best, classic songs of our time. Sorry, music today does not even come close to the epic classics. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. God bless.

Harri, it's not just me. There's a rumour that only boomers like old music. 70% of sales is for music that's 50 years old and more. Young people who work in record stores and restaurants with young clients are listening to Led Zeppelin and the Police! Music should be a transcendent experience, with emotional impact. Even Wall Street is betting against it;. buying publishing rights from Warner, etc. People are buying boxed sets, compilations, and on VINYL. I feel better now.

I interviewed Tommy James last week and he told me this song Crystal Blue Persuasion is about the book of Revelation and the new born again experience. He also said that Sweet Cherry Wine is about the blood of Jesus. He said he felt a song was a snapshot of where you are in life at the moment, so he put his faith in a couple of songs. Today he is still strong in his faith and shares how watching a Billy Graham special changed his life. 🙂

The band was so good I always assumed they were British. This one is a particular favorite, and very well celebrated the blossoming mindset set into motion by your Beatles and your Dave Clarks, Yardbirds, Kinks, and Moody Blues. I know I would like you by the music that touches your soul. I have seen reactors being non-plussed by the song. I hope your generation brings back the groovy peaceful vibe and adds a new layer of grooviness. Funny you should think they were The Rascals, who did "Groovin' (on a Sunday afternoon)"...as it was another case where I figured they were also British, because of the complexity and groove of the music. And beautiful acoustic guitar. Peace and Love. db

Many bands were adopting a variety of styles rather than sticking to just pop rock by the mid to late 1960's. Again a Beatles influence that gave permission to explore different music styles in pop and rock. Tommy James really grew and explored....he was no slouch for sure . He was from my home state of Michigan, and very influenced by Motown of Detroit as well, as evidenced here. Using a acoustic guitar solo was clever, making the song also sound a bit Latin or Hispanic style as well...the singing just beautiful.

Many of the songs in the 60s were peace, love, no war, spiritual in their context of bringing in this to the world. And yes, this was the start of the frequency raising on earth even now, even tho it doesn't look like it. The earth is a duality of good and bad, has been run by the service to self crowd (ego, power, money, control) but people are protesting and taking back their own freedoms...and this music and more like it was the start of that.

Imagine being in high school in 1969, and your classmates are being shipped off to Vietnam, and many of them are not coming back alive. Imagine anybody in this country of any Asian descent being treated like the enemy in addition to the country just 25 years out of WW2. Imagine the black population rioting in the cities, because just five years after the Civil Rights Act was passed, they are still being treated like they don't belong to America. Imagine throngs of kids between the ages of 14 and 17 running away from home, not telling their terrified parents where they are. Imagine angry protests in the streets, fathers choosing not to love their children because of the generation gap, and worst of all, our bravest of the brave coming home and getting spat upon for serving. And then imagine this song hitting the airwaves, providing that level of hope and calm to a crying nation. I still tear up when I hear that last verse.

Fun fact: according to his interviews it kind of is a Gospel song. Hit rock bottom, found a Gideon Bible in a hotel room, started reading it, "stole" it (so he thought), got saved, wrote songs like this one & Sweet Cherry Wine in an attempt to describe what he was reading about. This one is about Heaven, Sweet Cherry Wine is about the blood of Jesus. I highly recommend looking up his later interviews, his story is amazing.

That acoustic guitar playing throughout is like a butterfly darting around, following you as you walk through a field. I've had one of those things follow me home once.
