Blown away - I Have Nothing - Whitney Houston Cover - Angelina Jordan Reaction

Музыка

Watch this reaction video to the so hard to cover song, I Have Nothing by the legendary Whitney Houston and see if you think Angelina Jordan is worthy of being called the new legend. This is an Angelina Jordan reaction in which I react to her Studio version of the Whitney Houston classic I Have Nothing. This reaction video was actually recorded July 24th 2022, the same day that Angelina Jordan released this version of her cover of Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing. I have also included a live version that Whitney Houston performs and I recorded my reaction to that one as well. I had the good fortune to go to Norway on July 10th 2022 to experience Angelina Jordan live in concert. She did perform a cover of I Have Nothing as the last song of the concert. That tells a lot about the confidence Angelina Jordan has - to sing a Whitney Houston classic as the last song of a full length concert (18 songs in all). Needless to say the whole audience was blown away by Angelina Jordan that day. I hope you enjoy this reaction video where I do a Whitney Houston reaction as well as an Angelina Jordan reaction. For me it can't get much better than this. But of course I know that Angelina Jordan will surprise me in the near future. Looking forward to it.

It took me awhile to like AJ. While I think she is really talented and has a lovely tone and resonance, her fans are totally possessed and obsessed. And the superlatives and accolades are insane. As a 65 year old woman who sang and danced professionally centuries ago, I have heard about every singer who ever sang, and AJ is in the top 5 or 6 best singers ever. I also give her the edge for her age, because unlike Shirley Bassey, KD Lang, Lana Cantrell, whom I imitated, and my prodigy childhood friend, AJ has a terrific tone for her age. However, while I like AJ's tone at 16 better than even Whitney's, there is really no comparison. First, Whitney's diction was perfect and she didn't just reach the high notes, she conquered them. These wows and ahs over this child are bazaar. Also you didn't have to hear every breath Whitney took. But, let's see what AJ does in 9 years.

I must say, when I heard this Whitney version, it was quite a bit better than I was expecting. So much power, and this is Whitney at her jazziest, with all that ornamentation. Very impressive. But then, Angelina’s version, what ClandOp says. The sultriness, the soft passages, that gravel in the voice with words like “walk,” the belting, etc., all in harmony with what the song is saying. Great, great artistry, while with Whitney it’s more like a very impressive fireworks show, with some of the acrobatics getting in the way of the song. Whitney Houston is a very, very powerful singer, but Angelina is on another level artistically.

Being bored, I came here because I never had one of my comments "pinned"!! Not exactly sure why! But as I read these comments, I'm just amazed at the reasons why people like AJ better than the Voice. Incredible. And, she does it in the lower key because she doesn't belt like Whitney, I would even say, nobody does, and even Bassey, she sings one word and I burst into tears, still no Whitney. And the adjectives (if I remember English class) for Whitney's performance, is because SHE was on stage performing, not in the studio just singing. Whitney knew how to put a song across and she was a fantastic entertainer. I'm pretty sure Whitney, alone in a studio singing for a video, would do what you folks seems to admire. As for the way AJ says "walk", I'm really glad you brought that up, because, for me, that's a "cackle" and I really don't like that about her voice. Commenting on that, well, I have the pitchfork holes to prove that if you don't worship this girl, you get attacked. Never seen anything like it. There really isn't too much I don't like, but when she does that, for me, it's just not appealing. Why would anyone like that? To each their own, apparently there is more to this girl that people love and are just ready to accept anything. For me, besides ruining her voice to imitate Amy or Adele, and that cackle, I really do like her. It's funny, her tone and resonance is gorgeous and she's 16, she's tall and thin and gorgeous, Whitney-ish, with 9 years to go, but Whitney had stage presence and while I think AJ seems sophisticated on stage, she's just not Whitney, sorry.

One of the many artistic qualities that I enjoy about Angelina is she never overproduces her covers or originals. She could easily mimic original artists closely and draw praise from that sort of audience. She stays true to her own artistic expression and in both the short and long terms that makes her versions incomparable in their own right.Like Whitney before her I'm in awe everytime she steps up to a mic.

Can we talk about the difference between art (Angelina) and entertainment showmanship (Whitney)? Both are demonstrated at the highest level - kudos! In her delivery, Angelina seems to commit to deliver the essence of the song, lyrics and melody, into the listener inner world. No vocal acrobatics or pyrotechnics for the sake of impressing or just entertaining. Angelina transports us onto the human condition that the song represents. Wonderful!

You're kidding, lol!! How did AJ put in all that emotion? What you folks see is a little girl whom you love more than just a voice and what you hear is a persona. She didn't do this any more emotional than Whitney. But you're right, Whitney WAS an entertainer and when she sang, she did change it up,because she knew how, because she was on stage, had the presence, sophistication, total class, beauty, range, tone, ability, and so on. She wasn't doing some family video trying to reach high notes at the lower range. AJ is terrific, but Whitney's voice flowed like Heaven opened up. No pun intended.

@@challloyd215 I don't think anyone is taking anything away from Whitney, who sings with great power and beauty. This is her song and she owns it, as she should. AJ has her version that foregoes power, partly because of her age and style, to give the song more emotion than Whitney. What I mean is you can feel AJ pleas to her lover in the song are genuine (you hear that she is singing to a particular person), whereas Whitney is performing (singing to an audience).

Ok ...after some research they cover both 3 octaves, with the difference that one was fully developed and the second is only sixteen! Spinto soprano for Whitney, with some difficulties with her low notes. Mezzo soprano spinto for AJ shorter in her high notes but more richr in her low notes. And as you should know range doesn't not mean anything! except if you are on for the next Olympic of singing 😂😂😂! That's what we have these days with those mainstreams. No singers but vocal performers. Showing of there belting abilities, so ridiculous! Carey, five octaves , tone flat, dull, versatility none. Billie Holiday 2 octaves, full of soul, colours, textures, authenticity, certainly no need of stupids studio tricks, or any kind of stage tricks . Why? because that Lady like Angelina Jordan need only there voice to exist and capture attention . Sorry but those belting machine leave me cold. Whitney being the most acceptable in the genre . But one should forget Barbara Streisand far better comedian than Whitney.

You have the same feeling that I do about Angelina. Her tone hits a certain frequency that resonates inside me. I can feel her singing not just hear it but actually feel it. I think the hard core AJ fans have that connection as well. This is my theory anyway. There are some that like her voice and see the young talent but don't get the passion some of us experience and I think that is where the difference may be. When she sings I go down the rabbit hole with her and I feel emotions brought out by her resonance. For me, she is a once in a lifetime talent and I am in my mid sixties and been involved with music my whole life. I've seen and known many performers that were truly great. But this young girl sits atop my favorites.

It looked like she was also really enjoying it herself. I loved to see that. Angelina's version at 13 was amazing, mostly because I've never seen anyone else (except WH) do it better, no matter what age. But, this latest version, IMHO, is the new standard. Hi, Pontus! Thank yuou for another excellent reaction video. As you know there are many KZread channel owners who react to Angelina, and it is my, rather subjective opinion, that although there are some who genuinely appreciate her talent and versatility, many of them are "performing" to their viewers. Their body language is "over the top" and the cynical me doubts their sincerity. It is refreshing, therefore, to watch and listen to a reaction from you. You remind me of the school teachers of old who knew and were enthusiastic about their subject, but did not let that enthusiasm get in the way of being able to clearly explain to their students what they were required to learn. As to my thoughts about the differences between the two performances. Whitney was a great performer and plays to her audience because that is what they expect of her. Angelina totally convinces me that she had experienced the emotions which the lyrics convey, To repeat what has said many times before: Others "sing" songs, while Angelina "lives them.

You hear Whitney when she was on TV, if you're old enough, and you can watch YT videos, but NOTHING and NOONE can compare with her. They may be Whitney wannabes, but she was otherworldly. And for AJ fans to be so determined, naive, obsessed and having a lack of reality, it's unbelievable, really. The excuses are insane. Now, with that said, I think AJ has the nicest tone, outside of my 4 favorite singers, but she doesn't have what Whitney was but they keep trying, it's actually quite comical. Let's see in 9 years!!

Hi Pontus - thank you for this reaction. Whitney Houston is iconic indeed and I have been a fan since she came on the music scene in the 80's. I love her music and the body of work she gave to the world and I also have a tremendous respect her talent. She was and always will be a favourite but honestly since discovering Angelina I have to say I am hooked in a way that is totally beyond explanation. Angelina gets to me in a way that defies understanding. I have been following her since NGT and STILL when I watch those videos I get a tightness in my chest and the tears flow. I have watched some of those videos a hundred times or more and they STILL affect me the same way. I feel privileged to have been at her concerts in Norway this past summer. The whole experience was MAGICAL and these days the world certainly needs more Angelina magic.

Whitney Houston is one of my top female vocalists. Along with Tina Turner,Pat Benetar and Melissa Etheridge. Her voice, her stage presence, her life story who she was such a tragic massive loss. But I have to say Angelina was not only the first cover I didn’t stop listening to at some stage of the song but she gave me chills. Then when you said or at least I think you did that she is only 16!!!! I was blown away. She is so very very talented with years of experience to gain still. Amazing!!

As always an amazing reaction PO. She is the only artist I know whose live versions seem to be better, yes maybe more soulful, than her studio version. What I find interesting is Whitney, like Adele, is technically flawless. But nobody can emit the emotion and soul of a song like Angelina. I think she reads the lyrics first before listening to the song. In this way she can understand the feeling and emotion the artist wants to convey. Then she arranges it, maybe Jazzier or Bluesier as required, to be able to dramatically convey the feeling and emotion to us. She takes iconic songs and makes them Angelina songs. Her vocals, tones and smokiness do the rest. She is already The Greatest of All Time! Just amazing!! Also, if you had raised your Bye a couple of octaves, it would have sounded like hers. LOL

"I Have Nothing" is in 12/8 time -- a signature that encourages syncopation -- so improvisation is almost required in live performances. Whitney's performance is the ultimate in ornamentation -- although IMO Whitney's acrobatics in this performance distract from the emotional impact of the song, which is inevitable because the focus is on the vocals, not the content. AJ's timbre is just so suited to the song -- and remember, she's sings this song in E rather than G so it gives a more sultry effect. All in all I prefer Whitney's studio version over her live performance, and I like AJ's performance best of all because it transfers emotion better than Whitney. It's richer and more nuanced.

  • @Pontus-Osterlin

Performances later in life were often heartbreaking, and not in a good way. Angelina wisely does the song her own way…and it is breathtaking. If you remember what Whitney did with the National Anthem, I don’t think there will ever be anyone who will ever get close. Angelina is great, but she will never be Whitney Houston, thankfully, because she is uniquely herself, and to be in the conversation with Whitney, Mariah, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and others is a testament of her artistry, she just needs to continue being herself.

She's more than a "cut"! When she sang, the Heavens opened up! Angelina has a nice tone and is very talented, but absolutely cannot compare to "the Voice"! I've read comments from a lot of fans for 50 years in magazines, on KZread, other places, about singers, groups, cars, horses, and other things, but never have I come across fans like AJ's, lol. Talk about left field, especially when they say she's better than Whitney. Sure, they can have their opinions, I don't care about their opinions anymore, but better than Whitney..."come on man"! It's purely shameful.

look up Angelinas version of "I Have Nothing" at age 13, that is an amazing performance. she is standing in front of a microphone wearing head phones. she records the entire song in 1 try. Whitney took many tries and they had to blend her recordings together to get the finished product .

Actually I do believe that version was recorded in different takes. Not that it matters a whole lot. However she sang it for Jonathan Moffett (drummer for Michael Jackson) sitting down in one take in her studio. No wonder he was impressed 🤗 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJV5ztiLadabcdI.html

Pontus, through my many years of listening to music from all the greats many have held my respect and admiration. I fell in love with Elvis especially, and there was a time or two throughout my life I didn't care much for music, I lost touch. Then a young lady caught my attention called Adele. When I first heard Angelina of course I was awestruck. I proceeded to find all I could about her and listened to everything I could possibly watch on videos. That was almost 3 years ago, no artist has held my attention, respect, love, like Angelina. All do respect to all singers out there. In my eyes Angelina is a special human. Thumbs up sir. Thank you for your time.

AJ is fabulous and amazing, but Whitney was a vocal beast among women. Many replicate and emulate, but never quite outshine Whitney.

Whitney knew how to bring out the best in her songs. I first heard AJ do Yellowbrick Road, by Sir Elton John, and I was mesmerized by what she did with it. She made it her own. Seems to me that about every 25-30 years, a singer comes along who "just gets it." They get the music and the words, and when they put it all together and sing, WOW. You just know they are the next great talent. AJ does that. I looked her up to see how far back her career went and was surprised at how young she started. She was "special" then, and gets better and better so I'm always looking for something new she might be doing. I am a fan 4 life.

I’m a fan of the KZread channel of Fil Henley, Wings of Pegasus (@wingsofpegasus), especially his analysis videos of singers to show whether they use autotune or pitch correction. He uses the app Vocal Pitch Monitor. He isolates the voice and then shows us whether it’s pitch corrected or not. I did the same with the cover of I have nothing by Angelina Jordan and, as I expected, no pitch correction and spot on the notes! I hope Fil once will analyze some of the songs of Angelina Jordan to show there are still some great singers, in this case greatest singer ever, doesn’t need pitch correction!

Whitney Houston 's powerful voice is captivating and getting into your mind, and soul. Angelina Jordan has her own magic to take you into her world with a sultry, smooth, voice . Both have it but in different ways.

Angelina is able to tap into the emotions better than most. She delivers the actual intended meaning of the songs better than anyone I have ever heard before. In listening to her songs, I am finally able to understand the storyline that the original songwriter had attempted to convey with the right amount of passion and emotion. An amazing talent that brings me to tears every time I listen.😊❤

I agree, Lisa. She’s an amazing storyteller that seems to bring out the meaning in the songs she’s covering in a way that makes them fresh again and even in some cases it’s like I hear the lyrics for the first time. It’s astonishing, really.

I enjoyed this very much. I spend more time than I should following Angelina on You Tube. I try to see and hear everything. I really appreciate the things you, Chris Walker, Rusty, Alan and others do to promote, enjoy and share Angelina with all of us. I would have really liked to be able to travel to Norway this last summer to see Angelina and meet you all in person. Maybe it will happen at some of her future concerts, I hope. Just keep up what you are doing and know it is appreciated by her fans
