Lucretia MacEvil is a banger from this group. Another stellar horn band-Lighthouse has a monster song called One Fine Morning which also features horns and a great lead singer.

This may very well be the only tuba solo in rock and roll history and I love it! This is near the top of my favorite BS&T songs!

When David Clayton Thomas joined BST they dunked and souled it up with hit after huge hit in the early 1970’s!

I'm glad you finally found blood sweat and tears. They were awesome band great horn section great voice is a lead singer. They were overshadowed by Chicago and never got the notoriety that they deserved so thanks for bringing this out for other people to hear.

The bands with horns always got me too.... Lighthouse, Chicago, BST, Earth Wind and Fire...... Dig up a few more of these tunes....

Check out CCS from the UK. They were great too! Their lead singer was the late Alexis Korner. They are mostly known for their excellent big band rock cover of “Whole Lotta Love”, which became the credits for Top Of The Pops in the UK.

The only rock song with a tuba solo. We played this song in Jazz band back in high school in 71-72. Thanks for reacting to this. Been trying to get other reactors to give it a listen, you're the first. Next you need to listen to BS&T Hi-De-Ho.

They were such a great band. I knew the trumpet player from this band...Chuck Winfield. He was a teacher in the jazz program at the University of Maine at Augusta , in the town where I live. He was a nice guy and a great horn player. Have always been very fortunate to have lived near this jazz school. It afforded me the opportunity to meet and play music with a lot of amazing people over the years....and I agree with surlechapeau..... I think you should check out their songs "You Made Me So Very Happy" and "And When I Die". Certainly 2 of their best songs. Kurt from Maine

I couldn't agree more. In fact the New Blood album was definitely a different and welcomed direction from the band. More jazz sensibilities and very sophisticated sounding. They sounded a lot less like a rock band with horn "icing" and really well integrated arrangements.

I loved this group. Great lead singer. This was jazz-rock or progressive music. Bobby Colomby, the drummer, became a producer and record executive. He actually helped produce the Jacksons album, Destiny.

Yes Colomby did at CBS records. He was an excellent VP, very instrumental with Michael Jackson. It's interesting also Al Kooper left after the first album because the band didn't think he was a strong enough vocalist and Kooper didn't like the direction the band wanted to go, so he left, even though he was the main guy that put the band together. Of course, he went on to produce Lynyrd Skynrd's first three albums so he didn't do so bad.

Thanks for this one Wilburn - brought back memories of when I was a kid back in Australia. I'd busted my face one day at school, came home in tears and my dear old dad seeing me in distress did the only thing he could think of to cheer me up - he put on my favorite song nice and loud - this song! I still think Bobby Colomby was one of the best drummers of all time.

Colomby really turned out to be the driving force after Al Kooper left after the first album. Of course, Kooper went on to produce Lynyrd Skynrd's first couple of albums.

Bobby Colomby is one of the best unsung drummer's of the seventies. Great pick Chod. Check out "High on the mountain"🤠

BST original songs and cover songs arranged with heavy horns seen them three times once in 10,000 seat arena and twice in 200 seat concert halls

I'm jealous

I'm more of the "prog rocker", but "BS&T" and the old "Chicago" are always a feast for the ears and soul. (Maybe it's also because I used to help out on the keyboards of my brother's jazz-rock band quite often)

They called themselves the jazz band that had a couple rock hits. :) Their self-title album was the very first album I ever bought as a kid.

One of the great horn bands. Their "You Made Me So Very Happy" and "And When I Die" are next for you!!! I see you've done Spinning Wheel already. David Clayton Thomas' voice fit their music so well.

And their version of "God Bless the Child". I've seen a couple of jazz bands doing the BS&T version rather than the Billie Holiday version which I also enjoy.

Brass from another Galaxy. David Clayton Thomas's vocals ride this rhythm like a runaway locomotive train on a dusty rail.

This song was unusual for BS&T in that vocalist David Clayton-Thomas was on guitar, he usually just sang. Great song!

Their usual lead guitarist Steve Katz didn't play flashy riffs and was more of a rhythm guitarist. So Clayton-Thomas rocked out on this track (which he co-wrote with alto saxman Fred Lipsius). Yes, very surprising indeed. Who knew he could play like that?

Listening to BS&T doing God Bless the Child brought me all the way to Billie Holida and opened up my ears and eyes to blues and jazz...

Interesting that this band's roots were from a band called The Blues Project (a sort of bluesy -jazz- psychedelic mix) that eventually transformed to Blood, Sweat & Tears from an idea from the legendary Al Kooper (look him up) (the original singer on the first album) till he gave way to David Clayton -Thomas) But in this setting this band is right down your alley .. MUST do Lucretia Mac Evil .. Horns.. drums.. guitars.. and Thomas's great voice on the rest of the early albums.

I know many veterans of this era -and earlier-on the Toronto scene from which singer David Clayton-Thomas came, and it's often celebrated on FB and more, but I didn't know he could play guitar like that. Long a fave, I now know more about it , them and him. Way cool/hot.

Finally...their second album Is a pure masterpiece. Their third one Is excellent. The drummer Is awesome.

When the players are this good, it's easy to forget how unexpected and brilliant the compositions are. You're one of the few people who does this bad. I've never understood why. They're to rock, what Chicago is to prog rock.

I realize this upload was posted six months ago but had to comment. Attended three of their concerts and they were just incredible. To hear so many instruments play with such precise timing is mind blowing. The vocals and all the musicians are next level, and the studio albums now digital sound so live and powerful they give me chills almost like the live performance.

Two words...Lucretia McEvil !

This was from their fourth and final album with singer David Clayton Thomas Despite the acclaim for their first two albums This is my favorite If I recall there were no covers which made a difference Steve Katz songs on side 2 were magnificent The track with their former member and founder John The Baptist hits just as hard as this My only complaint with BS&T besides lack of original material which is why Chicago outshinned them was their arrangements Particuarly on their second album they literally tried to show off on every track The most absurd example was adding a Latin section which dropped in out of the blue for no reason on God Bless The Child On this album all of that was reigned in All the arrangements had purpose and were wonderfully executed as heard on this track A tuba solo would normally sound weird but it sounded just right here

High school bands played this alot in the 70s.

In my youth, there were 4 songs from this group on the car radio. God bless the child (cover from Billie Holiday 1942) Spinning Wheel, and when I die, you made me very happy. I heard these songs over and over and over. I have never heard anything from another album. New to me.

This was a great band from the late 60s and the 70s have actually sat down and listened to three of their albums from start to finish that's the way we listened to music back then

Love the brass in this song - doesn' t. Overpower the song but its presence is prominant and strong.

I know this is a bit old but if you like this you should check out the band "Chase" Led by Bill Chase, it's got a very similar feel for some of the songs. Some of their albums are a little too out there for me but I think you'd like "Woman Of The Dark" on their 1972 album titled "Ennea" For real, check it out.

Great first album with Al Kooper… decent 2nd album after Al Kooper left.. after that I lost interest…. But a great 1st album with Al Kooper

Kooper didn't do so bad after he left, producing Lynyrd Skynyrd's first 3 albums. Before that, that's him on organ on Bob Dylan's famous song "Like a Rolling Stone."
