Blocked cat. The emergency in cats that costs more lives simply due to cost and recurrent issues.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is Hershey. He has been blocked twice at my veterinary clinic. He is an indoor only male neutered cat. He was seen by his family going in and out of the litter of and only producing small amounts of urine. The first time we unblocked him we knew he was likely to reblock. When this happens it is an emergency. The average cost at an ER for this can be over $1,000. Sometimes 2,000 to 4,000. They also often reblock at some point soon after being unblocked. The treatment is often a PU surgery which can be another $3,000 to 5,000. This is what every pet parent of a male cat needs to know. Be prepared. Get insurance. Ask a lot of questions. And please don’t euthanize without trying to find affordable help. For more free pet advice find me at Pawbly.com.

Thank you for actually caring & wanting to help people and their pet’s! Too many practices only focus on the financials. For many people out there the lives & well-being of their animals directly correlates to their own health & well-being. For some of us our animal(s) are all we have. Being poor is hard enough but it hurts even more when you have to watch someone you Love suffer and/or die simply because of money!

@@memphis14vicki I’m so sorry. ♥️🙏 Our cat will be turning 15 this May and the last year or two has been really hard. I found a sliding scale vet an she definitely helped with the blockage but recommended an ultrasound because she suspected other problems. I Love this cat but I can’t afford my own medical issues never mind paying thousands out of pocket for a possible diagnosis. I just don’t have it… 😔 Unfortunately he’s continued having blockage’s but Miralax an a wet food diet has helped. Although there have been times when I’ve had to put gloves on and massage his butt (under great duress on both our parts!) a bit to get things moving. I know time is running out. He’s not young anymore and these health problems are becoming more and more frequent. I’ve been through the death of greatly Loved animals quite a few times now but it’s always heartbreaking! @@TaraConti thank you. I found a vet online who told what to do. Leave the catheter in take home and find a vet who did unblocking cheaper like 800. If they would have told me that I could have taken him to my vet that Monday. They knew he would block again but offend no alternative. They only wanted the $ period. Anyway I did find a farmer who said to put 10 ml down him of acv and it could help. I did this yesterday with another cat and it seemed to work. So I been dosing for 2 days and he seems to be ok. If I would have known this I might have been able to save other kitty I found out 1 day too late. The vets take advantage of us because they know we love our babies, and will even go in debt to save them. Felix cost me $3000 in February, $250 2 weeks ago because he caught a cold and had an infected eye, and his food costs $87 for a case of wet food, and $150 for his special dry food….and I have 3 other cats. Now they all get the expensive dry food because I can’t separate them at meal time as the dry food is free feeding. The wet food I’m able to separate….

My cat Obi is currently at the vet now for his UTI. Poor guy was in so much pain and I didn’t know what was wrong and took him to the vet right away. They charged me 2,200 for them to unblock him and keep him for 3 days. I didn’t have the funds so my sister had to apply for credit care to cover for it and we may even have to pay more depending on what the vet tell us after the 3 days. I was so desperate that I had no choice. I’m glad I’m watching these videos now and so disappointed that the animal care costs are super high almost leaving you no choice but to come up with the funds because you don’t want to lose your family . Truly heartbreaking.

Pu surgury in southern California is 7k. My cat was blocked 3 weeks ago for the 3rd time he spent 3 days at the vet paid 3k. Yesterday he started acting up again I refuse to pay another 3k to unblock him. Found a vet in tijuana mexico who is amazing and will be doing the surgury on my kitty. And let me tell you I won't be paying anything near what they are charging me here. It's sad and upsetting that vets especially emergency vet over charge. Like what's the difference between day and night? Why is everything so ridiculously expensive when it comes to emergency clinics. Yall use the same equipment you would use during the day crazy!.

THANK YOU FOR THIS INFO. I agree that no pets should be just euthanized because of that. Also like you say its important not to wait longer than 2 blockages to do the surgery! another important thing is to give your cat enough water access and keep the water away from their food( they will drink more) Apply more wet food in their diet. And even add some of those homeopathic drops in their water or food once in a while which help with acidify the urine to prevent chrystals and blockage to occur.

My male cat is in recovery tonight from a second blockage. First one was 6 years ago and the cat is 10. My mother has adopted many cats in her life. Hard to monitor everything going on and one cat died overnight. You can't beat yourself up over unforeseen medical issues. You gave the cat a better life than living on the streets or in a shelter. I am however of the opinion after being -5k in medical bills, that the best option is rescuing a female cat moving forward.

We just spent $7000 to unblock our kitty twice over a couple of weeks. And now he’s incontinent and I’m hoping it’s just from medications and not from another blockage. Is urinary incontinence normal while they’re on Prazosin? We’re day 4 after discharge where he spent 3 nights in the hospital with a catheter and IV fluids. How long would urinary incontinence/leaking last? He’s still not fully emptying his bladder…we took him for a check up last night and despite him peeing decent amounts throughout the day he still had a decent amount in there. Today he barely peed, but he live big wet spots everywhere he sits.

He is a 22 lb Siberian and they are unable to express him manually so we have been taking him home and doing rubber catheter as the costs have become to much to have him there overnight. Hopefully with a empty bladder and medication his muscles will recover. A warning that his can happen, though I'm told its rare. Hi. Thank you for this, I just wanted to ask for advice. I’m from the Philippines and I have an almost 6 yr old siamese persian cat who had Urinary Blockage last April 4. His past vet got him cathetered and made us bring him home with it bec they didn’t have means to confine him. After almost 48 hrs, we took out the Catheter ourselves as instructed by the vet. He did good, was eating a lot, peeing a lot of big golf ball size after his medications was done. But now he started showing symptoms again of going back & forth in his litter box, there were urine but only small pieces of them. I got him checked with another vet and saw in ultrasound that his urethral lining is thickened. Doctor prescribed us antibiotic again for a week, meds for crystals and another med for his kidneys. Should we get him cathetered again? Or wait for the meds to take effect? I’m worried as he’s showing the same symptoms from his first blockage.
