How to give your cat liquid medication - without traumatizing you and the cat

This video is about administering liquid medicine to your pet cat. Vivian Borders, Owner of Derby City Critter Sitters, will show you how to approach your cat, how to hold them firmly (without hurting them) and prepare to give the medication quickly. You can avoid traumatizing the cat and more importantly, avoid getting scratched or bitten by following Vivian's instructions. The method is quite simple and actually works. You'll see that Vinny (the cat) takes the medication very easily and is not the least bit upset by the process. You can do this, too if you follow step by step what Vivian suggests. #planeteinsteintv

You have there a very cooperative cat and not a very smart one. Our cat smells the medcation from the other room and disappears instantly. If we catch him when he naps, there is no way he will open his mouth, and he will use all his razor sharp claws to teach us a lesson. Now it is so bad, that he smells our anxiety even before we open the meidcation vial. He knows what we mean to do and - he is gone. All the videos on KZread show well behaved cats. Nobody talks about real character cats.

Thelonious2Monk We lured him with tuna (and his front paws are declawed, but he's a biter!) The "medicine" was just water so you are correct about being able to smell the medication.

+Linda Christie How do you know she did the declawing? Many declawed cats are rescued because the heartless people that did it to them didn't love them enough to keep them out of fear they might scratch their precious furniture. Sorry, but I doubt these people were the ones who declawed this cat.

exactly. Most of these videos are bullshit, my cat can smell my anxiety from a mile away and is a fucking ninja. You don't touch her without her approval, period. This cat is dumb and cooperative.
My cat knows exactly when I take out meds for her and runs away. Very stressful.

i just saw another video that said NOT to lift their heads up too high because the liquid can go into their lungs. to try to keep their heads straight, with a slight lift but not too much.
My boy fights me like a banshee, hissng and throwing himself around, it is a real struggle and most of the time he gets away and then feels bad towards me for days.
I need to give my girl cat antibiotics for 7 days. Good Luck to me !!!!

Ohh boy wear a helmet
First she said she will coax Vinny to come to her, but seconds later, she tells the owner to bring Vinny to her. And when she administrated the liquid into Vinny's mouth, a lot of the liquid spilled out of his mouth.
Just plan my emergency room visit cuz I'm already knowing my wild beast won't go for any of this. Show me a feral cat getting oral meds! Lol
It seemed as if all the water that was thrown into the cat's mouth, the cat easily disposed out of the mouth. If this was a $500 dollar medicine, it would have been almost a complete waste, but most importantly, the amount of medicine that cat really took would have been minuscule. This really isn't giving the cat medicine, this is an excuse of giving the cat medicine.
My cat is a very big adorable one but when it comes to taking medicine, it never happens that easily ! I think he understands first telepathically even before we mooved a finger and the we need to wrap him with a towel a fight...fight again and still fight.... ☹️
That is not the right way to give a cat liquid medicine. The cat did not get it in it's mouth as you can see how it dribbled out. You need to do it at the side of the mouth where there is gap and just squirt it in. The cat will love you for not forcing a syringe in front of it's mouth.

she hasn't got s clue u dont put medicine in a cats mouth like thst u have got to put the syringe in the side of his mouth and u dont hold him by the scruff u good the tip of his head and ears so then the cat will out it's head upwards so then its easier to give it and a lot less stressful for your cat,and u got to rub their throat after to make sure he's swallowed it.

Hey guys! What if the medicine is really thick and I have a hard time pushing it out! Should I water it down a bit
Wow. A lot of assumptions are being made in this video. First, many cats don't like treats. Secondly, there are cats that won't come near you. Notice, you have two people involved. The one woman carries the cat to the sitter. Also, what if you have a cat that doesn't even let you touch him? Not a real world scenario.
Wow this is great. Thanks you so much! You’re saving me and my boys a lot of stress!!
The part about giving a treat before is so important. That, and go to where the cat is rather than carrying her to your table. If practical, give her the med where she already is.
Thank you! I watched you video after getting scratched up n meds in the carpet. Now I'm going to try this again
This video is perfect everything we needed to know, thank you so much!
I have always heard you aren't supposed to tip the head back because it increases the risk of liquid going down the wrong tube, In my experience if you get it in the right spot in the pocket of the cheek and go back far enough, there isn't really a need to tip the head back and thus reducing the risk of fluids going into the lungs!

Awesome thank you so much for this, just gave my cat her first dose after viewing, a great help x
Thank you so much for the video! I've tried to give him liqiud medication in many ways but he vomited it or coughed it out immediately. But finally everything went well. Lots of Love, Tori and his mommy

What did you do differently?? Let them eat a little bit of food first?
EXCELLENT. Thank you. You make it look so ez.
Why didn't I think of the scruff, of course, thank you so much fr this video, I have administered three doses so far but two of those took two attempts and each unsuccessful try ends up with medicine on her fur and me. So can't be wasting it, so much appreciated.
Thank you all! Very good video.
I got long hair flame point siamese and she looks so similar to your cat!
Do you put it as far back to the mouth so that they don’t choke on it? My cat is the worst, when administering liquid medication’s. He acts like he’s dying and then I start crying because I feel so bad.
The last thing my rescue cat is interested in is taking food after the liquid meds (and I have to give two different liquid meds in succession which has been pretty difficult for us both). Any words of wisdom for my situation other than being as quick as possible and trying to calm her afterwords before she runs to hide and pout? God I wish this wasn't so tramatic for her. My poor kitty.
Love her hair!!
WRONG WRONG WRONG - shooting liquid that speed / pressure straight down mouth is asking for the cat to inhale the meds instead of swallowing it!

militaryrep...ok so what is the right way, you didn't say.
What fell out of the cat's mouth when you injected the meds???
Found this video randomly and literally thought it was me in the pic. Vivian (appearantly 9 years ago) looks a lot like me today 🤭
Worked with my kitten. What a breeze! Thank you.
My cat fights me n after i put the medicine in its mouth she starts foaming... like she almost regurgitates the medicine out
What about to hide it on small amount of yolk taw egg ?
Perfect 👌 Thank you 😊
My little old guy has an ulcer, so now I have to give him something for his stomach, and antibiotic, and a pain medicine for his arthritis 😫 multiple times a day. Not easy
thank you very very much, soooooo helpfull, muah xx
I have to put mine in a kitty straight jacket and she's still nearly impossible. Without it 2 of us couldn't do it. My cat doesn't like anything except dry cat food.

Did you find a way to painlessly medicate your cat? My cat doesn’t like anything except dry cat food too. I’ve tried a lot of treats and different brands of wet food but she won’t even look at them. I even tried to starve her and see if she’ll eat them. The tuna water used to work but her new meds must be really bitter. She foamed in the mouth and hid from me. We tried to burrito her but it stressed her out. I’m really afraid she’ll open up her sutures. 😭
I guarantee it wouldn't be that easy for my cat!
Hii dear doctor please give me some advice my cat Please Please My cat ingred lag And Dr. Recoment Novamox 250 mg Madicin one day 20ml give cat My dout is a 20ml is overdose for cat
Interesting, you didnt grab the cat's head.. will try that thx! any tip when the medicine has a disgusting taste? may be avoid letting it get in contact with the tongue?
It’s a lot different when you’re trying to administer a nasty tasting liquid-especially when it’s a large cat and the dosage is @ 3 mL. That’s too much to give in one squirt-you risk having kitty aspirate.
This is an ideal situation. My cat has zero interest in treats when he sees or hears the med syringe.
I’ve tried everything, my two cats are extremely difficult giving them liquid meds.
Is that a Javanese flame point? I just got one from the shelter.

Melanie Haney Melanie, he's a Himalayan Flame Point.....not sure if that's the same thing. But quite a character!
What about giving meds to cats that non compliant cats?
I need to give my cat 1ml antibiotics twice a day by syringe (tooth infection gone up into her brain) she's always been quite wild, and can easily rip your hands to shreds when you try to hold her or pick her up. She's quite ill at the moment, but it's still almost impossible to go near her with the medication.

What worked for you? I used trick my cat with tuna water but her new medication must be really bitter that she even refused tuna water. My cat gets aggressive when she is stressed. I tried burrito method but she trashes around and I’m afraid she’ll open up her sutures. I’m on my wits end.
was the table sick or your cat????
I wrap my cat in a blanket and then open her mouth. Then I administer the medicine
Is there anything to mix the small dose of liquid with that way the cat can just slurp it up? Maybe tuna water or something? Anybody ever try that? I have to give my cat oral meds and it’s impossible. The pill is easy but the liquid isn’t going down.

The problem is that a lot of these liquid medicines taste really bad so instead of disguising the taste in some good food it actually makes the good food unappealing to them because now it tastes bad. :( So trying the voluntary route usually doesn't work, in my opinion.
Could you make a video like this using a difficult cat? This isn’t helpful for me.
My kitties are normally super chill...for anything but medicine. Lol we keep trying though
My first two doses have been unsuccessful lol gonna try this
The diversion of the tuna is a good tip.
my cat is big like Vinny and he has huge paws which he grabs my hand with, which is not fun at all, so now I wear a leather glove.
The fleur de lis told me right away that I am in the wrong hub here.
Question for the gentleman administering the medicine: what if the cat wont open up?
I WISH my cat was that EASY!! Mine Starts Throwing Punches at the Syringe and Me as I'm Heading Towards Her to Make an Attempt to Administer Anything!! Is there any type of TASTELESS Antibiotic On the Market, That I can Put Into Her Food??
The water is easy, the real medication smells bad to the cats and at the momend they smell it they run away. I have hard time to asminister the antibiotic to my kitten, I have this feeling he will start to hate me soon lol
It's too bad that it seems like half of what was in that syringe went everywhere but in the cat's mouth.
Appreciate the video but my cat ain't going for this lol
Never ever lift the head up thinking that you are helping ur cat to swallow..instead the medicine goes into the lungs instead of their oesophagus.. they always swallow with head slightly downwards..
Ha! Yeah right.😂
This won't work for my cat.
Oh crap a cute hairy cat on top of a kitchen counter yikes!!! My OCD is running wild!!! I wouldn't ever eat there. Yikes.
i will be traumatized by this process for the rest of my life, tried to administer a liquid diuretic to my cat, he went into a panic, was dead an hour later, i am devastated!

Wish my vet was Hot like Vivienne 😊

This doesn't work....none of these vids work. I am having to give one of my cats a med right now and holding him by the gruff and putting my arm on him doesn't matter, he still wiggles out and clutches his mouth so tight you couldn't pry it open with crowbar. Animals are smart, he knows what we are doing and he wants none of it. Some say try wrapping a towel around him...yeah OKKKK....Trying treats does nothing. Every time I end up with medicine on him, my bed, and my clothes.
Comment number 100! Use a more unwilling cat next time please.
you used water to teach us how to give medicine to a cat?!??!! they run away at the smell of any medicine
Who on earth gave Vivian that haircut? Grotesque.
Terrible That was awful!
Horrible instructions
You have a declawed cat, and you dare to give any advice?? Declawing cats is torture for them,, BIG SHAME ON YOU!!!
