Block Plane [Restoration]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

/ handtoolrescue for upcoming projects.
This is a Millers Falls No. 16 block plane. Cleaned up very well and could still use some more material removal on the sole. Sharpened to 8000 grit.

    Why is it that I can watch hand plane restoration videos all day and I still enjoy it. I swear someone could make "hand plane restoration the movie". It would be 3 hours long and my eyes would be glued to the screen like it was a new star wars movie. Then I would pay to go see it again the next weekend.

I just wish you would slow down a bit because for me I had to rewind so many times to figure out how to put this together again. I am stuck with the long lever and how to put it together. • @WHCAudio

    @WHCAudio

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nope other way around. Put it on it's side and you risk knocking it out of setup. The blade can handle resting on wood, just don't slap it down.

  • @PeterColmore

    Shitty Bill thanks for that and your probably correct with wood, but say you were working outside and had nowhere else to put it except say concrete or metal then you would have to put it on it's side. My uncle who would be over 100 if still alive always taught me to never put a plane blade down on any surface, he was old school so i would have thought he knew what he was talking about, just my 2 cents worth

    @@PeterColmore You dont need to manufacture some improbable instance to justify your incorrect notion of putting a plane down on it's side. Planes are used on wood, predominantly. You can put it down on the sole. End of discussion.

    I noticed you sand blasted and repainted a hand drill recently but this didn't get repainted. How do you decide how far to go, the estimated value of the tool? Just curious... Love watching these videos, I have been amazing a collection of "user" tools and slowly refurbishing them but I wouldn't go so far as to say "restore". I just want them to work, and I don't want to sell any kids on the black market to acquire them. LOL!

  • @HandToolRescue

    Some of these tools don't need the FULL restoration treatment, but if something has less than 50% of the original paint left, then I repaint it. Certain high value tools should never be touched though, if you want them to remain as collector's items.

    I work in a hardware store so I find your videos particularly useful; We sell vaporust in a spray but when I saw you dip your hardware in a 5 gallon bucket of it I was amazed by the results! I'll have to pick some up and try it out on some random hardware so I can learn how effective it is; although, judging by your results it works well. I do like the fact that it's effectively reusable, hence your giant dipping bucket. EDIT: my order guide suggests that is actually a 3.5 gallon bucket. Apparently out of stock for my store it seems...

    To flatten the bottom of your hand plane you should stick a piece of wet-dry 400 2 a piece of quarter inch plate glass. You should have the lap until you get a consistent scratch pattern then lap again with a 600 grit wet dry sandpaper. Then you would be sure you'd have a flat bottom on your pan plane.
