Glad to hear my theory of "all army builds from France are bad" supported by you guys. I had a very strong discussion on the topic with "a helping hand", and I hadn't realized at the time that not all players recognize thet France should build fleets haha

I've started reading the messages and they are quite interesting. I noticed that England repeatedly asked Germany 'what's going on with the fleet build' in Kiel in S02, even after having been given an explanation by Germany. England sounded quite robotic there.

This was a pretty consistent thing throughout CICERO's games and a big reason why the researchers never claimed anything along the lines of 'it passed the Turing Test' (imo). If the other players were told that a bot was in the game, I think they could often have spotted which player it was from some of the dialogue; there was always at least something that sounded a little bot-like that got through the filters. Nobody ever actually figured out that it was a bot though, I think because 'this is just a slightly unusual person' is a much more obvious reason than 'there's an AI that can negotiate with me'.

“I’ll stare at this Fleet in the Tyranny Sea really angrily and hope I can turn it into a Army.” -Etzio In my opinion, funniest quote of the entire game, hope to see more content out of this channel!

Excellent commentary as always! Random Diplomacy question: If I want to run a variant map online is WebDiplomacy my only option? I'm gathering friends for a Diplomacy game where most of them are new to the game and I may have more than 7, and I don't want to leave anyone out. It's just that WebDiplomacy's interface is kinda... outdated. Backstabbr would be great, but I haven't found a way to run variant maps on it.

So in London, when we play face to face, we pair novices with experienced players when we have too many players. Not sure if that helps!

vDiplomacy has a huge number of variants (many over 7 players) but is based on webDip and has the same somewhat outdated interface. Your best bet if you want a more modern one is probably Diplicity - it doesn't have quite as many, but it looks a lot nicer! PlayDiplomacy also hosts variants, but they're behind a paywall, so it wouldn't be one I'd recommend.

Seeing how poorly France played made me relativize the IA's success. Not building fleets twice were basically noob mistakes, kinda ruined watching this

Yeah, it's an interesting one. Open to all tournaments are definitely easier to win than something closed (like original ODC or DBNI) and everything CICERO competed in was open to all. That said, I don't think the researchers ever really overclaimed on this front - they announced CICERO as being Human-Level (not superhuman) and the big achievement was that it could play the game well with negotiation involved. It still has a long way to go before it would consistently beat human experts, imo.
