Diplomacy is a negotiation-based board game set during World War One. 7 players each control one great power (England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey) and fight for control of Europe, using their diplomatic skill to make covert deals with one another and to backstab their friends.

Love the analysis of the perfect V. Spring 1907 cooperation between Germany and France was due to the fact Italy would have benefited too much from an F/G fight and would have had enough momentum to out pace both of us. We needed to get through that round and properly neutralize him and prop up Turkey before feeling confident to revisit attacking each other. There were also threats from Turkey made at this point to throw to Italy if help didn’t come, which given his situation at the time as a 5 SC nation and John’s maverick style of play seemed credible.

I am slightly colourblind, and was using this colour arrangement. Turns out I prefer the original one. Particularly, Turkey and England are kind of messy in this one, as I realized in a game I had a 2 way draw playing as Turkey.

I've had a very similar experience with the colorblind mode - I actually forgot that it was a setting & not an update that I 'disagreed' with. For me France/Germany in this setting are worse than any combo of the OG colors though the map is more vibrant with all 7 powers active. No stranger to dot confusion myself!

@@laKogane I also kind of forgot I had marked colourblind, lol. When I changed to normal, it improved greatly. There are several forms of colour blindness, and I am quite sure this setting was not made with my type in mind. It is not an issue, though, as the original settings work quite well for me.

Going to revert to the standard colours in future given the feedback, I think. Much appreciated!

This was an incredible match! After his stellar coverage of S6's crazy finale, I was excited to see that Ed was gonna get a chance to face off with Ewok, Conq, and the greats for the title this time around. How was the famous "VI" going to be topped this time?! I have to say this was a masterclass on his part! I even found myself wanting whatever nonsense he was selling the board by the end!

I'm colorblind, so here's my unnecessarily long comment on Diplomacy colors. There are 3 main types of color blindness, one for each of the color cones humans have. I am a mild protan, which means my "red" cone is lacking. The biggest impact of this is that blue and purple are virtually indistinguishable(I've heard it aptly referred to as "blurple"), but there are some other colors that occasionally cause problems. I will note here that although people with either a deficient "red" or "green" cone are sometimes called "red-green" colorblind, at least in my case that does not mean that I can't tell red and green apart. I haven't played much Backstabbr to play around it with myself, but just from watching your videos the normal settings for England and Russia can sometimes be pretty difficult to tell apart. The rest of them are fine though. In this colorblind mode all of them are great besides England and Turkey, which is maybe slightly worse than England/Russia in the normal settings. Diplomacy is sort of a difficult game to make colorblind friendly as it relies on differentiating 7 different countries purely by color. With 3 types of colorblindness and 7 colors there's probably not any single color set up that works for everyone, aside from using something else in addition to color. I suppose there could be flag tokens marking supply centers and unique units for each country or something like that, but that would definitely be a bit clunky. I often use Conspiracy, and I will say at least for my type of colorblindness it works better than either of the Backstabbr variations. Austria and Germany are maybe a tad bit tricky, but it's not really an issue. I think having Russia be white really helps it out there, since unless you're straight up fully blind you can always tell white apart from any other color. So instead of 7 unique colors they really just need 6.

I am not colorblind but my best friend is and I do know a lot about it. I have filters that can accurately represent different forms of color deficiency. The backstabbr filter is okay. It seems to help a little with protanomaly (Red-weak). Turkey/Austria and England/Italy are kinda close-ish but still fairly distinguishable. It doesn't do quite as well with deuteranomaly (Green-weak), Austria/Russia are pretty similar. It sucks for Tritanomaly (Blue-Yellow), Germany and France are pretty hard to distinguish. England and Russia are pretty close too. WebDiplomacy still has the best colorblind options as far as I've been able to tell. You can pick the appropriate type of colorblindness and in my testing with the appropriate filter it does quite well. My friend starting being able to tell what's going on with the map a lot better when he turned on the dueteranopia filter.

Thank you for the commentary. I am not colorblind, but with this color-scheme I damn feel like I am; especially looking at a Turkey-Austria-Entanglement. I hope you can find an alternative, that includes colorblind DiploStrategists as well as being more distinguishable in a "full spectrum". Keep it up, mates!

I think what you guys missed is that France and Germany never started their war until ~fall 1907 or so. Hard to say without communication of course, but in fall 03 they were still cooperating vs england(freely giving france belgium), Then in fall '04 germany did take belgium back, but this was also only possible because france moved the unit into london. At the same time france attacked Lvp from NAO rather than from IRI, while germany kind of left Edinburgh open. At this point neither of the players are moving in way that truly suggests war. Them still working together at this point explains germany moving east(giving away belgium and edinburgh in fall '05), it explains the fleet attack to italy from france in ' 06(and italy's defense, if he realized france and germany still weren't at war), and the hesitation to attack eachother in spring ' 07. Whether they *should* have started their war, and especially France around '05, is another question, but i don't think they had any intention of battling it out at that point. Perhaps they were afraid they'd be giving too much room to Russia and Italy by ending up in a battle?

Diplomacy's setting is a bit of a weird one in that the rules state that the game begins in 1901, but it's pretty clearly supposed to emulate the first world war itself, so it really *should* start in 1914. I think 1901 is just used as the start date to make it easier to number!

I feel like the way backstabbr shows moves is hard to understand. In the actual boardgame you see the RESULTS of moves every turn, here the units are depicted at locations that they no longer are in. That is seriously unintuitive, and it confuses even the casters, who are very familiar with the program. They keep missing locations of units, as they have to decipher them from the orders, instead of just looking at the units' actual graphics. Why not show just orders, if the unit's location is completely irrelevant? I think backstabber is nice in the way it shows supports, but it really should change to showing the actual positions of the units instead of where they were in the past. That is completely irrelevant information in nearly all cases.
