Keep Them Guessing - The Frozen/Diplomacy FanFic [April Fools 2023]

CaptainMeme and Ezio commentate the Frozen/Diplomacy FanFiction 'Keep Them Guessing', by RebaMacnCheese! You can find the original story here: archiveofourown.org/works/310...
The story features five of the characters from Disney's Frozen - Elsa, Anna, Olaf the Snowman, Kristoff, and Marie (formerly Hans) - join Marie's brother Anton and niece Tosia for a game of Diplomacy.
Diplomacy is a negotiation-based board game set during World War One. 7 players each control one great power (England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey) and fight for control of Europe, using their diplomatic skill to make covert deals with one another and to backstab their friends.

this has me absolutely howling. i don't actually play diplomacy but i just love this channel's content. i watched the first media wars a while back and absolutely loved it. it's a shame that competitive play coverage normally doesn't include the press, as i enjoy that aspect of the game the most. although of course as you mentioned, the utter chaos in this one is possible in part because it's not a regular competitive game. huge respect for these LONG commentaries, they're such a joy to watch

This is a coolest thing anyone has done for one of my fanfictions - thanks so much to the Diplostrats guys, and CaptainMeme for reaching out for my blessing! I don't actually remember if I understood how Norway worked lmao. I think I did assume that you couldn't get a fleet from south coast Norway to Barents Sea up there, since it doesn't work that way with Spain, or with the two coasts of St. P. Elsa's decision in doing that double-convoy was not purely rational strategy movitated - it was more motivated by Rule of Fun, with the idea of a double convoy directly from Edinburgh to St. P. being awesome if impractical.

Huge thanks to the author, RebaMacnCheese, for giving us permission to commentate this and use their artwork on the thumbnail, and for checking over it after! You can check out Keep Them Guessing here: archiveofourown.org/works/31031186/chapters/76655297 They also had some comments on the commentary, answering some of the questions we raised during it (Spoilers below if you haven't finished the video yet): - Re: Holds - the author was new to Diplomacy, and thought that if you didn't have anything productive to do with a piece, the default would be to hold it. They weren't informed otherwise until quite late on in the storywriting process, and at that point the choreography of the board was already locked in place by the story. Some of the more unusual moves were for similar reasons; they were necessary for later narrative. - Anton's lies aren't for the sake of being duplicitous. Lying to Tosia about supporting her into Warsaw was to find out her plan of attack, so that he could more effectively predict and prevent said attack. With trading Budapest to Kristoff, he didn't actually agree to give it that turn, and was just offering it in future (Cap's note - that was a mistake in my notes!) - The game is called to an early end because Tosia is a teenager in this story, and the game had run late enough into the night that her mother demanded the game end. (Cap's note - this is mentioned in the story, but I skipped noting it down and then forgot) - Tosia waited so long to attack her father because she didn't want to be isolated in terms of alliances. While Olaf was technically aligned with her, he was also stalling her out by supporting Kristoff, so she would not have had any useful allies. (Cap's note - this is a common thing in Diplomacy games, I've seen a lot of players who have had very solid stab opportunities not go for it because they don't want to go it alone).

This is probably the funniest and interesting games of Diplomacy I have ever seen. I would love for something similar to be shown!

You should've made a game commentary where your Co-host was just snippets and parts from previous games you commentated together ...
