    I liked B a lot better. More body and smoother in the top end. I don’t prefer the openness of the EVO. I Didn’t like a certain frequency area of the EVO around the high mids but that can be EQd. The 251 is so smooth on the top end but that price. Sheesh. I still think the EVO is great for the price. Would be cool to compare it to the Telefunken TF51. I think an Eden is a great choice for a high end tube mic as well. Edit: just heard the rap part and I preferred the EVO on that

    Great Video David! I actually lean towards Evo, however on Bellas and specially B Star recordings I heard weird artifacts, in upper midrange on it (Elam doesn't habe those). It sounds a little bit like audio after denoising, which is weird, cause those are raw files. I don't know if this buzzing can be a flow in the design, maybe there is some denoising element in the circuit, that would actually be rational due to this incredible low and stable noise floor. Nevertheless it sounds really really nice, full, open, doesn't get harsh and this issue I mentioned will probably be inaudible for most people. I work mostly in film post so I am very sensitive to things like this. Cheers!

    Evo sounds great. It might sound a little thinner post production though. Noise and saturation from more faithful vintage gear can add to the warmth and smoothness. Hey Bengt, I do have a JZ V12 as well (as you probably know) and it's also a great mic. The difference is mostly in the top end. While they share the same "style" the JZ is gonna be a bit more hyped in the very top compared to the Evo which is a tad more open than the Elam but still smooth, with the V12 being clearly top heavy in a way and with less body/low end.

    Yep I guessed that A was the EVO, largely because it has a touch more sparkle which is a common tweak added to newer variants of classic mic's. That said I am not so sure I like that trend because sometimes the flatter mics take eq a bit better. EVO sounds lovely though. Market is thick with 47 and 251 clones, a great thing for us recordists!

  • @CircleAudio

    @CircleAudio

    Ай бұрын

    Hi William! We actually pride ourselves on the fact that the EVO 251 is not a clone. We also didn't add any EQ boost whatsoever to our mic circuit (The ELA M has a boost at 10Khz). Where the brightness/openness is coming from in the EVO is the fact that our transformers don't roll off until 65KhZ, leaving no need for any additional EQ. The result, a richer, more open and natural top end. These mics take EQ beautifully, but the nice thing is, they generally don't need much to sound finished!

    That kind of test say nothing, I mean thx for that comparison BUT... You can also check Rode NT1 (black one), sounds almost like U47...as dry signal. Rode has video on their YT channel. After you will compress, de-essing and compress again, and sooth and..and...and...after that you will hear the difference. That high value mic's are unpleasant, lifeless if recorded dry, but they give you a lot of way you can process vocal parts without sounding weird. Rode does not, after you will compress and do some other process your vocal will sound like shwiet. Neumann U87 is bright, but keeps that brightness in balance, that is why after all mix it still sound fantastic and clone Rode NT1 A (silver one) is terrible after multiple compression instances, because sibilants come out and kick your ears and drill your teeth. Thats why premium artist and studios still buy Tele 251 although the price is that high :) IMO on Bella voc with instrumental that is obvious that ELAM sounds more balanced, for me won the competition brutally...but it is my opinion, like back lower part - everyone has its own :)
