Great comparison I'm actually a Nashville native artist and have worked with alot of the artist you have, so it's cool to see. I've had my eyes on the warm audio since they dropped it to add to my mic collection. And think that with some EQ repair it can sound similar. Obviously the the Sony is outside my price range so would be out of the question but would be a dream mic for sure.

What i hear whenever i hear WA 8000 is that i hear a upgrade and a better sounding mic than sony c800g, it sounds full without sounding muddy like the sony c800G does on some vocals. Even Kanye said it himself, that some vocals he found sounding muddy after recording some tracks on the sony c800G, and the Wa 8000 sounds full without sounding muddy and i think it is a great thing.

The warm needs a volume raise in the mix, it's sitting better volume wise with the Sony but you can get it there with very little work with that warn. One needs some de ess and the other needs some volume to make it closer. Warm is killing it in the price per dollar and quality per dollar.

These weren't recorded at the same level. Adding gain to the Warm Audio post-recording definitely would add to the feeling that it's less full/present. The transients are at least 30% larger (in the first example at least). Still a wonderful video though! I just want to point out that the WA had a disadvantage right off the bat

immediately felt the warmth and smoother presence to me on the 800. The warm was a lil more harsh and felt a little less beefy to me. But still not bad for either eq or saturation you can add to it. Wish I could only afford the 800g though haha. Nice test fam.

First - thank you for making a real unbiased, straight to the point video. I’ve watched several and didn’t get true information! Great video 10/10. My take away - I like the Sony better - but not by much - like u said - the WA is about 80 percent away - I think adding an eq and taking the low mid frequency’s down a half a db and raising the mid high range a half a db you would have an identical sound of the Sony! For a fraction of the price I think Warm Audio did amazing. I wouldn’t truly know that without this video - great job bro!

Simply put: Test #1 - RAP TEST: For Rap the sibilances are way more noticable and dare i say they are sticking out on the sony mic where as the WA-8000 might be complimenting spoken word and rap a little more . Then again slight eq and your job is done. Test #2 - Sining Test: Personally for singing i 100% prefer the sony mic rather than the WA8000 hands down. So much presence, brightness and clarity in the sony mic in terms of singing. Then again you are paying 10x the price . I must say very amazing job from Warm Audio Kudos, and thank you for providing the video comparison!

And if you really want it eq some air in it with a maag or avalon for example and put a little low mids out with a dynamic bell eq band, for example in pro-q3 Thanks for the comparison! Ps: you can hear and see that the sony has higher peaks which can be easily be perceived as more clarity as well

The Rap vocals are similar the Sony is In my opinion way better for a more polished professional sound but if you know what you're doing in post with the Mixing I believe the WA-8000 can get much much closer to that perhaps with some saturation and some eq and of course the Right vocal chain and great Raw Recording. I'm finding that to get the best out of these High Quality Mic's you need to be in a sound treated environment because if not they will def pick up Floor noise. Dope Video! Potentially catastrophic. The warm used wholesale source components to make it competitive . They modeled the circuit to the establish budget’s potential , but there is almost definitely a significant difference in what the power supply is putting out . Better off letting a circuit guru from one of these companies handle the mod and upgrade the inferior capacitors and possibly even the tube .

I have a C800G and I have a problem with it being too boomy (proximity effect). My vocal chain is C800G-BAE1073-TTCL1B. I’ve recorded from further distances (10-12 inches from the mic) and still get the same results. Maybe it’s the CL1B bringing up the low end information? ‘Boominess’ would come from the 200-400hz range so I guess I would play around some more with the 1073 filter and eq if your neve pre has an eq on it. To me they sound totally different and could hear it straight away . Sony sounds way more natural and gives that 3d sound which is almost life like . wa800 on the other hand has some phase smearing at highs & high mids which makes it sound way more artificial . still usable but its not replacing Sony . I think main reason why , is the capsule . there isn't a company yet who figured out how to tune k67 like Sony does . it takes tons of R&D to get it right . hope someone will come up with something close to it .

@@dannydooby From what I've seen you could be waiting for that stam for a MINUTE. To hell with that, at least that's my personal take. I grabbed a WA-8000 a couple months ago to replace my TLM-102 as my main vocal mic. Zero complaints. I run it through a BAE 1073MPF which is fucking brilliant. If you're going the c800 clone route, I suggest a 1073 style preamp. Of course when it comes to mics you'll get 15,000 different opinions so be wary of that. In my area, besides guitar center there aren't any places that let you try out any worth mics besides the usual budget suspects and the only studio in the area is shit. So I had to dig and dig and dig, read hundred of forum posts, listen to tons of shootouts etc etc and decided on the WA-8000 and luckily it was a solid pick for me being I didn't get to test it out before buying.

I bought this particular unit because it's one of the only sub 1,000 buck interfaces where you can actually bypass the internal preamps. With that said, the burr brown preamps are the same as their consoles if you wanted a cleaner vocal take for a certain application. Great conversion, great control, free desktop app to do direct monitoring while recording, set up cue mixes etc etc. I would buy another one tomorrow if my current id22 were to die today.

The best way I can describe what you hear when comparing legacy mics to copies, is that the copy always sounds like there’s something missing or something needs to be adjusted. The legacy will always just sound right. Whatever folks are doing these days to produce microphones should just stop and go back to how they did it before. All of these materials are still available in abundance today and still cheap lol.

Once the WA 8000 is upgraded with the correct tube, main capacitor, and official Sony capsule both microphones sound a lot closer to each other because the WA 8000 is an exact copy of the c800g circuit and the internal parts are even almost in the exact same position on the circuit board, the WA 8000 mic body is an exact copy of the c800g just with different brands of internal parts than what Sony is using and without the Peltier tube cooling system but both mics run at about the same temperature during our testing
