Touhou is the biggest secret of the internet. It's inspired a lot of old school memes in the anime community and is really mainstream in japan, like on the same level as jojo or naruto. But since no one in the west knows them, they are the internet's most hidden-in-plain-sight secret. BTW, this anime is a really quick summary of everything thats happened in the 26 games, so lots of stuff is omitted.

Or at least stuff that's happened from the 6th game on, anyway. A lot of stuff from the PC-98 era, barring a few of the characters, was left out of the Windows canon.

Zack Zander Yuyuko has a canon backstory, as well as some other characters. A lot of it tend to be open-ended, which is why there is so much fan-lore.

Oh. I was *not* expecting to see a memories of phantasm reaction here, or anything Touhou really.

(At 4:14) the ice fairy's name is Cirno. And she's claims to be the "strongest". Though she's actually more both childish and idiotic. But she is my second favorite child character in the franchise. Even if she is over 60 years old.

Touhou is a very interesting franchise. The music is iconic, and so are the characters. There are so many characters and somehow it seems the fans care a lot for _all_ of them. Well, they do introduce around 5 new characters every game. And yes, the action sequences here were short because they put the story of a full game into a single episode (Theres like 25 games if you didn't know). I personally can't keep track of everything that's going on in the games but some of this fandoms creations are among the most fun and creative stuff I have ever seen. This franchise didn't reach meme status for nothing. I mean that in a good way.

Yeppers. One of the biggest statements regarding the series creator is that he traded his ability to make decent art in order to compose awesome music. :) As far as the number of games goes, the first five games were on the Japan-only PC-98 system. From the 6th game on, canon started going in a somewhat different direction.

Oh, awesome, more Touhou! :D Yes indeed, the Touhou fanbase is insanely dedicated! It's one of, if not _the,_ largest fanbases in all of Japan, possibly even the world, and that's not an exaggeration. And not really knowing what's going on is fine - after all, this _is_ fanmade, and while it's really well done, it was sort of constructed in a way that assumes the viewer already knows Touhou. Also, about the shorter action sequences, they _did_ compress an entire game's story into a single, sixteen minute episode. From here on out they spend more time on each arc, so if/when you continue, you can expect the action to be a little more fleshed out. Lastly, that girl you pointed out was _not_ the one from last video, but rather her older sister, Remilia Scarlet. Flandre Scarlet is her little sister, and is also blonde instead of having bluish-purple hair. They do wear the same hat though, so fair point there. It's also worth noting that Remilia is the vampire Reimu was talking about, Sakuya (the silver-haired maid) is just her maid, and is not a vampire herself.

'Dedicated' barely begins to describe it. For the first few years after I started playing the games, looking at fan works and such, Patchouli had a tendency to turn up in my dreams for no real reason. That's how obsessed I was with the series. :)

And in all fairness, if you like reading books as much as I did back when I used to read them all the time - you know, before the Internet kinda obsoleted them :( - Patchy would be a fantastic person to have show up in your dreams. But, as for me, despite how obsessed with Touhou I was - and still am - I've only ever had a Touhou character show up in my dreams once, and that was Hecatia. Which is a damn shame, because I'm a lucid dreamer, so having them show up more often would be phenomenal. Not that I'm complaining about hanging out with Hecatia, of course, because she's awesome, but you get my point.

Ooh a touhou series ! That was unexpected yet very welcome. If you're starting to like Touhou then I'd recommend also checking out minusT's 3D touhou fight videos, they are really impressive and much more accurate to the game's battles (though I suppose it could spoil you if you want to play yourself). It's also fun seeing how their animation has evolved over time.

In touhou, the music is the same or more important than the games or series itself, touhou got famous because of the music, so i hope you can feel that touhou vibe whenever a main theme appears.

Tbh, watching this really makes me think he should check out Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Now THAT would be amazing! It's a very interesting Magical Girl anime, but what catches most people by surprise is how... well... i wont spoil. But dont let the Magical Girl genre bit of it fool you ;3 I'm sure you'd enjoy some ships in it too, Raritydash, it's only about 12 episodes with a movie (that you dont have to watch if you dont want to, but it's still a good part of the series)!

(At 13:43) dude, she's a ghost… she's already dead. Unlike her servant.

(At 6:16) another magician (Purple Hair) born as a witch, named Patchouli Knowledge and her Devil pet/familiar (Red-Headed succubus) Koakuma. Yes, Koakuma IS a species called Devils.

(At 5:50) third favorite child in the series. The Neko shikigami named Chen. Chen is 1 of 2 of my favorite characters who are both two-tailed cats. She is by far the youngest in the series at 30 years.

(At 6:07) now unlike Marissa, this girl, Alice the Puppeteer who started as a human IS a full-fledged magician with experience. And apparently has a complicated relationship with Marissa, as well.

when u really think about it - its gonna take a year and $240 to watch the entire series - everyone look forward to it =)

9:46 No that is the head maid of Scarlet Devil Mansion. Her name is Sakuya Izayoi and she is human. Ah you know what? I'll give a quick breakdown to some of those shown, but not expanded upon. I'll exclude those that I can recall get expanded upon more in other episodes. The 'Ice Fairy' from the start of the episode is called Cirno. She is a fan favourite and often associated with the number 9 because she is an idiot. She is also a prankster, boastful and childishly temperamental. Often picking fights with people for very dumb reasons. This is because she is one of, if not the, most powerful fairies in Gensokyo. Though this doesn't mean much given most characters are stronger then her. 5:23 That is Letty Whiterock. The seasonal Youkai of Winter. She is portrayed as having a cold personality, but not much else is really known about her. This is probably because she is an oddly unpopular character and so not many creators bother to use her. Hence why I think she was taken out in such a comedic fashion in the episode. The small two-tailed catgirl getting chased by Marisa in that strange room is called Chen. She is the Shikigami or servant to a Fox Youkai called Ran, who herself is the servant to another character that'll get shown more later. It's as intentionally silly as it sounds. Anyway Chen has a sweet nature and is hard working in her tasks. Although is obsessively fawned over by Ran and other characters because she is basically a soft little kitten in human form. The three characters seen flying in the sky above Gensokyo as Marisa approaches the hole into the Neatherworld are the Prismriver Sisters. Lunasa, Merlin and Lyrica. These three are ghosts that are often called upon to provide music for events throughout Gensokyo. all are generally positive and don't look to cause trouble, but like everyone else they are more then able to fight and were a boss in the game this episode is based off. Oh and finally a fun fact. The half-human half-ghost Marisa battles before reaching the top of the stairs is called Youmu Konpaku. She is the inspiration behind the Youmu's Ghost blade item in League of Legends.

In case you haven't noticed, the original videos did not actually have any voices. It was just animation, music and sound effects. As such, it was up to the fans to do the voice acting and one girl, in particular, came ahead of everyone else by literally voicing everyone by herself. She's called Pika Aizawa and she voiced all the characters from episode 1-3, a total of 26 characters. Afterwards, she stopped though people suspected she went and became pro leaving the other episodes voiced by other fans.

demons (yokai) usually doing something bad that either marisa or reimu (the witch or shrine maiden) have to fix and based on a game that is a bullet hell shooter so think of the screen being filled with bullets but because its touhou the bullets are usually really pretty patterns also really good background music

@@ianlauthner9018 As someone intimately familiar with the series, Touhou has a metric fuck ton of shipping. Like an obscene amount of yuri. More than any other franchise on the planet. So if you're uncomfortable with that... run. xD I personally love it and that's partially why I feel RD would feel right at home in this world - the rest of the reason being that Touhou is genuinely the most enjoyable fanbase I've ever seen. But I understand that stuff is not in everyone's tastes... and if you can get past that... The games themselves, as described, generally revolve around youkai getting bored and causing trouble, and someone - usually Reimu or Marisa, but sometimes someone else - has to go and tell them to knock it off. Disputes are resolved through Danmaku duels, which as seen in this animation, are magical duels filled with patterns that favor beauty and elegance over raw force. Despite them talking about things like "exterminating youkai" and death, lethal force is actually strictly forbidden in the Spellcard Rules, and you're asking for an _insane_ amount of trouble if you break them - so much so that even the most mischievous youkai adhere to them, for the most part. From this, a tale of a magical land, filled with diverse, interesting characters and many deep stories to be told, blossomed forth. The world of Gensokyo is quite expansive, and you'll find no shortage of content to explore. Also, despite what I said about shipping, truthfully you don't have to look at it at all, just like with anything else, and you actually won't see much of it in most of these animations. There's a vast amount of stuff that has nothing to do with it. It's just that you will inevitably run into it from time to time is all.

(At 4:54) what I DON'T get is, why she's called "9"? Like the numbers in her eyes, right now.
