I don't think the outer ring gear is aluminium tbh, it's probably harder than the cast iron/mild steel billet he used to cut the gears. I think others have good reliability with soft metal gears. Lasts a lot longer as an over package in the rough terrain of the sub continent.

@@oneman29 *The bicycle wheel "hub" I'm pretty sure is aluminum. The inside of the the wheel hub has "teeth" that the four "sprockets" ride in. He talks about removing the four nylon gears and replacing them with steel gears. The aluminum was stronger than the nylon gears but not as strong as the steel gears. Those steel gears will chew the aluminum wheel hub up if they fail.*

@@charliesgrumma5388 it's steel. I have rust around the area where the bearing is. If it was aluminum it wouldn't rust. Therefore, the hub casing that has teeth which latch into the planetary gears are steel.

Its Mindbreaking, how someone with such steel working skills does not know, the gears NEED to be nylon, to prevent damage to the case. Just buy new ones for 4$ each every 1-2 Years.

@@RandomClips27. what motor? im currently on geared motor with default nylon planetary geras inside with controller 48v 22a max and 11a continuous, im thinking to put steel planetary gearings inside and put on controller with 30a max/15a continuous, would that work, is that what you have done and it works fine for 5years now?

In my case outer gear hardness 50-55 hrc & other gear non hardness ms metal. How to damage outer gear. If damage outer gear i can change it. It's also removeble.

...... Make them in brass and you're in business, any metal gears will be louder than the nylon ones, but brass will not wear out the ring gear in the hub shell.

Yeah , well , you can change the nylon gears and the motor will run . Those steel ones will do for a while , but they will chew up the teeth on the hull . That means buying a new wheel later on 😑.

Hey, can you hook up a center lock disk adapter to the gear hub clutch for me? Someone did something similar. It is a good way to have regen without losing the freewheeling

Is the outer ring you're greasing at the end, a steel gear ring pressed into the hub or is yours plastic or machined into the hub?

There's a reason the gears are nylon.

How is it holding up today? Did the teeth strip from inside the hub wall? Because the reason they use plastic gears is so the gears can damage and it cost less to replace rather then the internal teeth in the hub. It will cost more.

I looked real hard and finally found a planetary gear box with steel, instead of nylon, gears. So go figure! I'm building my own set up so maybe i can avoid the problems with steel mentioned here.

Outer frame me Aluminium ka teeth nahi hote, metal ka ring with hardness wala gear hota hai sir ji, hardness (50/55 hrc) gear k sath agar non hardness metal ka gear lagaya jaye to non hardness wala gear sab se pehle kharab hoga. Our aap ko pata hoga metal ka without hard wala gear kharab hone ko minimum 10 years to lag hi jaye ga. Thank you.

I tried metal the noise and stress. Re fitted new nylon and clutch so quiet and smooth. Won't be using metal that noise wasn't healthy my bafang is 12 years old and has done 1000s of miles. Over charged high speed pushed 54v but happy back at 36v

Definitely the metal gears will be louder, probably loud enough to be distracting to the rider. I wish the eBike hub motors used quiet spiral or helical cut gears instead of loud (but efficient) straight cut spur gears.

Yes

You upgrade to brass, not steel. Those are going to shred the outer casing ring gear. You won't need planetary gears after that. You'll need a new motor.

@@audacityhour3104 It probably is brass, or at least some other similar alloy, as trying to machine pure copper is more difficult. You should be fine with those. Match your gear width, height, and tooth count.

@@audacityhour3104 I'm working with Bafang (8-fun) BLDC hub motors. The outer case IS the ring gear. 😂 But this is good, because being in contact with outside air allows them to cool very well. Whatever your setup, you wouldn't want steel riding steel, as this causes [Fe] bits wear off and get stuck between magnets and stator or sensors. Non-[Fe] type metals won't do this. Plus they will conduct heat, instead of holding heat. Last, you will want to remove old grease, and replace with an all-weather aircraft grease. It will stay where you put it and not become stiff in cold.

@@ahmadzaki3328 if you're actually looking at swapping to metal gears though you need to look into getting proper lubricant for the motor because pure metal gears will cause more damage to the motor in the long run due to metal shavings. There's a reason why there are nylon gears. It's all a trade off and it depends on what your end goals are though because metal gears will transmit torque way better than nylon gears will but from a longevity standpoint nylon gears will cause less damage to the actual motor itself then metal gears will
