Bernina Barb here. A few answers to comments as of December 29: Most any Bernina machine that has a button hole stitch can do this technique. My new 790 automatically adjusts the tension down to 2.75. I'm not sure older models automatically do that. So, give it a whirl on some scraps and see how it goes. I used my 20C open toe applique foot. Some prefer the dual feed version. I've also been told a 23C foot can be used. I used an iron on stabilizer on my homespun piece. The flannel I was using in the video did not have stabilizer. Starch or fabric sizing is always a good option. Thanks so much for watching and good luck!!

Thank you so much for making this video - this technique really deserves much more credibility. I demonstrated the technique at Bernina Open Studios at Houston International Quilt Show in 2017 (with permission from Valdani using their threads). I would add that I use a thread stand and a cup to get the Perle onto my machine and it works just fine on my Bernina 330 too! I use a gold eye embroidery needle size 14 and my favourite stitch is a square 3.5. Cleaning the machine should not be underestimated though! Enjoy!

Personally I love the Valdani 50 weight cotton variegated threads made specifically for the sewing machine. The hand dyed colors are phenomenal. Sometimes they can be a little finicky but so worth the results.

Just found this. Excited
Been doing this with pearl cotton on my 21 year old Viking Designer 1 for YEARS! SPEED IS IMPORTANT take it slow. It works great in the upper looper of my 936 Viking serger as well. Again slow down. I use a Schmetz topstitch needle size 16 or a 110 size 18 reg schmetz
Give the gum a rest it is so annoying. Sorry but it was so distracting I couldn’t make it through the video.

Good tutorial. Just as an FYI, I have a Bernina 580E which is 9mm but haven’t tried this in it. I also have a Janome Quiltmaker 15000 and used Sulky 12 wt and it works fine. 50 wt in the bobbin.

I have accomplished Blanke stitching for years on my Janome 6500 using a 100/16 needle, 60 wt for bobbin. And SULKY 12 wt cotton thread. Therefore, Any reason why the Valdani would not work on my Janome?

My Janome MC14000 (9 mm) and my Juki F600 (7 mm) can do that stitching with the 12 wt thread. I use a 80 wt or 60 wt bobbin thread. I can’t hand sew. I use the same needle. I use mostly Sulky 12 wt. but now I’m going to try that thread your using. I adjust my tension.

Hi Lisa, I watched your video and learned a lot, thank you & Barb for making it. I do have a question on which pattern or book that has the pattern for your hand stitched 1883 crock of flowers you have as an example of your hand stitchery. I would like to purchase it. Thank you

Aurifil 28 Wt or Sulky 30 wt works well. I use machine embroidery thread.

I have a Bernina B720 which is a 5.5mm. I understand the need for the 9mm width if you want to do wide fancy stitches and the wider blanket stitch, but if you only want to do a narrower blanket stitch, is it necessary to have a 9mm machine?

I was wondering the same thing.
What foot was on your machine to be able to see the stitching? I thought this demo was very clear.

Can you use dual feed? If not why?
can you do this technique on the 740?
i wonder if our giant 9 mm stitches will mimick sashiko stitching.🤔
My Bernina lets me engineer a custom blanket stitch to mimic hand work. Instead of a perfect stitch (which is fine), the custom stitch pattern is a bit uneven, more like done by hand.

Why can’t you use the smaller 5mm ? Wouldn’t it just make a smaller stitch?

Thank you for this video; however, chewing your gum distracted me. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed this.
I don’t know the thread you’re talking about, please you shouldn’t assume. Gum is so rude when talking to someone, even if you’re talking to those you can’t see😢
A shame the presenter was chewing all the time
