Blanket Fort Camping

I have finally completed my lifelong dream. To camp in a blanket fort! It seems silly, but it actually worked out better than I thought. I went to a regular campground with other respectable campers and put together a blanket fort with rachet straps, clamps, and tent pegs. It was a very acceptable camping shelter and a relaxing couple of days!

I feel like we've witnessed a real evolution in your culinary skills. You've gone from fritos with chilli and cheese to halibut with a white wine reduction and fresh veggies. You're a legend.

Looks from the neighbors. It’s not about the blankets. Instead they are whispering to each other, “Do you think that’s Steve Wallis?” “I’m not sure. You ask.” “No, you ask.” Putting up blankets - “They were all out of tents.” They keep stealing glances. “Oh, there’s the Step 2. Definitely Steve.”

No doubt there are private moments we don't see, and that's perfectly okay - healthy to the healing process even - but his commitment to continue on doing what he knows Jess would have wanted is truly a testament not only to his character but to his love and devotion to honoring her memory. I'm 62 and will do a blanket tent at the drop of a dime. I live alone and will do it in my room at home if I'm stressed enough. And I could care less what people think. I've never had a better night's sleep in my life outside a blanket tent. I always compromise my comfort for what's acceptable...but the older I get, the less I care what's acceptable and the more I care about comfort, both physically and emotionally. I love the tent you made, Steve. I never thought about going to the goodwill store for blankets. I'm heading out this afternoon to check my local place. Just never be ashamed to do what makes you feel good. Stop worrying about what others think and enjoy life. We only have one and it's ours...no one else's.

I couldn't agree more--he's too humble to ever admit it, but his Way of Being is really a valuable life lesson in how to conduct yourself, and if not always maintain your happiness, at least maintain your dignity. That is not an easy needle to thread. That, to me, is the most amazing thing about Steve. I would have debased myself a number of times going through everything he has in the last year. And rather than change for the worst, he has evolved into a version of himself no-one knew was coming, and yet is somehow, someway, better than the Steve we watched a year ago. (Sorry if you read this Steve, but I call it like I see it, and I don't think I am wrong in my assessment. I can cite examples, could write a thesis on the subject if pressed. OK, at least an essay.) If I could be like him when I grow up, I'll die a better person. (I turn 47 in August.)

So, in conclusion, blanket-forts are great camping gear. Especially in grey, green, black, or brown. If it snows, a cheap tarp can be used to waterproof the outside. In a pinch, a few garbage bags and some packing tape (aka. scotch tape, clear tape) to glue the garbage bags, and you're good.

"I wish I did this 35 years ago." I love that line and your blanket fort. I organized a February campout in North West Florida with 12 of my colleagues about 53 years ago. (😱) Two by two they bailed on me as the temp fell throughout the week. I was between tents so borrowed a colleague's son's backyard pup tent. That with my blankets I thought would suffice. End of the week it four to six joining me. Long story short, it was just me. The ranger at Torreys State Park thought I was nuts but I insisted I was staying. (The bathroom was clean, tiled, and heated. I'd survive) Made a killer beef stew which was frozen solid next morn. My boots, which I had bought inside were thick with icy stalagmites. It got down to 28 F. Blankets saved me. Thanks for always sharing yourself as you follow your passion. ❤ 🏕
