This reminds me of an interesting fan theory/canon that suggests that most mid to top tier criminals and villains in DC know who Superman, Batman, and other heroes' secret identities, or have a pretty decent enough idea. But they don't act on it, nor do they allow their underlings to even know, even eliminating those who find out. Simply because if someone did try to use it against said hero, the hero would drop their inhibitions and utterly destroy them and their enterprises. Its just not good for business to out Batman as Bruce Wayne or Superman as Clark Kent. Wayne and Kent have normal people responsibilities they have to juggle that occupies their time and attention. If that was exposed, they could go full time as their crime fighting persona. Or if they felt threatened, as stated above would go down a path no one, hero or villain wants.

A lot of people praise Morgan Freeman for his line delivery for making this scene work as well as it does. But Joshua Harto as Coleman Reese is the linchpin of this scene, and he nails it perfectly. His facial expressions alone convey so much to the audience: arrogance, dawning realization, and understated fear, disappointment, and trying to save face after humiliating defeat. He excellently carries this scene with minimal dialogue, and he doesn't get enough credit for his contributions.

It's pretty much a given. It's the same with the Mafia and organized crime. Most people know who the bosses are and who did what crime. Going to the judge and testifying on the other hand, is often so dangerous is basically a death sentence. So what do you do when you know who the boss of a Mafia is and who he killed. You shut your mouth and move to another country. And continue life.

@@dubbekingyou're right, the movie makes it clear that Reese was likely going to keep his mouth shut until people started dying at the Joker's hand, and the casualties continued to mount because Batman wouldn't turn himself in/give into the Joker's demands. He decided that he could bring an end to the killings if he went through and exposed Batman anyway. (Haha, no). So he arranges to expose/divulge Batman's identity with a news station. However this would spoil the Joker's fun, because then Batman wouldn't have a reason to submit himself/give into the Joker of his own free will and choice. So to prevent this, Joker tells the public to kill Reese before he can "spoil all the fun" or he'll blow up a hospital. In an interview scene with a news guy, that is advertising the future interview, Reese is shown saying that he planned to keep quiet, and hoped Batman would do "the right thing", but can't wait anymore. He tries to expose Batman, believing that he has a moral obligation to do so, or at least that's the public justification that he's giving for it. (Based on his characters other actions in earlier scenes like this one there are certainly other motivations like wanting to gain fame or wealth from exposing Batman that also probably feed into his decision, but the character only claims a moral obligation. However, if this was his only motivation he might've done it less publicly/more securely, by pre-recording his expose and sending that to the news, while also preparing it to be released online with some kind of dead man switch, so that even if his live interview failed/was covered up the evidence and testimony would still be released to the public. So perhaps there is some merit to the belief that he also did it for fame/wealth, and was counting on the publicity a news interview would give him, more than a secure leak.)

Okay then to answer your question: Yes. I’m not a criminal. But Bruce technically is if he’s a vigilante. Pay me or I’ll leak this to the news. $40mm upfront to be a “consultant” for Wayne Enterprises or $5 a year for 30 years.”

@@felipeduggan2812 honestly I would never blackmail someone. But if I did, that’s how I would have responded. If you’re gonna do something, do it right. Also just saying, if you think that blackmail doesn’t work in the real world you’re mistaken. I’m sure it definitely does. Maybe not all the time but definitely does. And to people with millions or even billions. Trump is currently in a hush money trial and it’s clear he did it. While not blackmail I think that’s blackmail adjacent imo. So it definitely happens. And yes that’s incredible sad and disappointing.

@@artieo5339 well first of all trump is a presidential candidate and they always have a corruption case. Probably most of his supporters still believe is all "fake news" so it doesnt really affects him? There is a difference between hush money & blackmail but i dont wanna go into that. This dude has more money that trump and he literally spends his nights in a bat costume beating criminals to a pulp, im not sure if you can even negotiate with someone like that. My point being is that if they dont put a bounty on your head is because you dont have intel they are really worried about. Take julian assange as an example of what power can do.
