I was wrong when dismissed the Helmet in the show as not correct. It was actually based on a real existing kind of helmet called the Illyrian. I still think I was right in saying the helmet wasn't appropriate for Achillis because it would still be out of place in terms of dates, and because it would still be too open considering Homer actually describes Achilles as being very covered in armour and also because he tells us he loans his armour to his friend Patroclus with the intention of hiding his identity through the helmet, so it had to be closed. Still if you want to know more about the actual helmet check out Schola Gladiatoria's video response to me

    CORRECTION! The helmet Achilles is wearing in the tv show, although not correct specifically for Achilles, is based on a real existing kind of helmet called the Illyrian helmet I wasn't aware of. Matt Easton, from Schola Gladiatoria, corrected me on that so I stand corrected. I still think that the Helmet Achilles wore should have been a closed helmet considering the description of Homer that tells us that Achilles was so well armoured that not much of his body showed. Also we should consider Homer tells us that when he lent his armour to his friend Patroclus, they had the intention of hiding his identity specifically through the helmet. (hence it had to be closed). Still the part where I say that the helmet was completely wrong is wrong. If you want to know more check out Matt's video response to me. Thanks! Well, they certainly cannot use authentic mycenaean era armours - those are too ugly. :) Just imagine poor movie director - on left shoulder he has historical advisor and fans: "Make it accurate! Just this time, please!", on right shoulder is shouting producer: "Make it more sexy! More cool! We need to sell it! And don't forget ninja-pirates!" But in some cases I believe they kept historical advisor locked in basement all the time.

    It would be ridiculous because a Zulu King being black is just as important as him being, well, a king. Having a white man playing him would be farsical, just as much as a movie about Washington starring a black man as the general would be farsical. Achilles, on the other hand is not defined by his ethnicity, skin colour or country of origin at all. It's a completely irrelevant detail that changes nothing about his character and the way he reacts to the events of the story, not to mention how Achilles isn't an historical character so it's not like anyone's is being "disrespect" by casting a black actor. It's not weirder than casting a British woman as Cleopatra or an Australian as William Wallace and yet people didn't complain about these, did they? I mean, the Trojans are supposed to be Turkish people and yet are all played by white people, as are all the Greeks and in fact there isn't a single Greek actor from what I understand so why is Achilles (and Patroclus, but for story reasons if Achilles is black, so must be Patroclus) in particular such a big deal when the rest of the cast is also of the "wrong" ethnicity? It doesn't matter, at all.

    I love this whole blackwashing history thing because it implies that in order to be impressive, black people need to borrow from white people. It implies that only the history of white Europeans is impressive and that black people have no history or culture worthy of sharing. To be “good” you need to be borrowing from someone else. It’s perhaps the most disposable thing that can ever be implied about a culture and it reveals how truly racist places like Hollywood are. They can virtue signal and preach inclusivity all they want, but the reality is staring us in the face: they’re more interested in blackwashing history than in telling and exploring black history.

    I would say a lot of that is because the majority of the population is uneducated about history. Your average western TV viewer has only heard of the big names in history and mythology (which are mostly Eurocentric.) A show about the Mali Empire, or the Nubians probably wouldn't be well, because people wouldn't know who they were. Rarity worked against us all the time until more recently when finally we were represented in more mainstream culture by people like actress Lucille Ball, for example. But now, based upon your comments and my own experiences, it looks like we're back to being erased, again, as the rarer Europeans we are, so American blacks can feel "better" about themselves and "included" by randomly inserting or rewriting themselves into history in the most implausible ways for the most obnoxious of rationalizations. Let people, past and present, have their stories about their own cultures and myths. There are so many areas of the world from which to pick historical or mythological content in the ancient craft of storytelling, why do people feel the insane need to lie and rewrite someone else's history to "be represented" in ways and places where it was implausible or where they ignore facts just to fan their own egos?

    People still don’t understand the full agenda & the reason for the constant race swapping. The reason all this race swapping is happening in film and television, with both actual historical figures & “fictional” characters as the victims is for one reason & one reason alone. The reason is to promote and normalize the Kalergi Plan of white racial replacement in the minds of the masses. And they will keep doing race swapping & blackwashing even if they lose tons of money & have horrible ratings, because it was never about money or ratings. Cinderella & Beauty & the Beast are ancient European fairytales that likely predate even Christianity & there should be ZERO black people in those live action films. Just like, in a live action Moana film (even though it is not ancient) there should be an entirely Polynesian cast. Just as in a live action Mulan should be an entirely East Asian cast. There is a reason they ONLY race swap and black wash WHITE characters. And again, the reason is about promoting & normalizing the Kalergi Plan agenda. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Actually, this is not so bad after all. These are fairly light cases. In Finland, people had long dreamed of the movie about Mannerheim, who was the 6th President of Finland during the World War II. So, in 2012, a movie called The Marshal of Finland was released. In this movie, the president, the protagonist, was changed to a black guy in modern Kenya, but which was WWII Finland at the same time. They also addet a frame story about a narrator who tells this story to children, and who also highlited that "this is how it all really happened." And as you might guess, that movie flopped very badly when it was released. Many were angry and traumatized that the historical president of Finland, who was supposed to be the white guy, had been changed so radically and black washed.

    This is particularly a problem with recent historical based BBC TV shows. The number which show black people in roles that never had black people, such as European monarchy, is ridiculous, let alone the role of a Greek national with a Greek name. It makes me weep when I think of the number of production companies who sacrifice accuracy in depiction for the sake of -tokenism- I mean diversity. It's insulting to the actual people being depicted to be so misrepresented, it's insulting to the ethnicity of the actors portraying the role that they couldn't be bothered finding an actual person of that ethnicity to depict, and it's insulting to the intelligence of the audience.

I can't wait for a black 007 or a woman 007 and I loved almost all 007 movies. The problem is having a woman James Bond. James Bond is the actual 007. If James Bond retires, another agent will be codenamed 007. That's the point. James Bond is a person. There's no woman named James. However there could well be an agent named .. Sally or whatever and this agent could be the new 007.

    This sort of cultural revisionism is not only disrespectful to the ethnic groups whos history and folklore are being rewritten. It's also disrespectful to the ethnic groups who are being shoved into places and cultures when they simply weren't there. But that's the point. Woke Hollywood doesn't want to make media about stories like the Epic of Sundiata, or the tales of Anansi. No, what they'd rather do is rewrite European history and culture to make European ethnic people think that we didn't make anything ourselves, and that we have no claim to anything that's ours.

Hannibal Barca's home country of Carthage may have been in North Africa, but Carthage was started by a runaway princess named Dido from Tyre that bought the land that Carthage was built on. So, although Carthage was founded in North Africa it was mostly populated by non-African light skinned people from outside of Africa.

I’m saying all this to clarify , although I think it’s sad that I have to do this, that I am black and I enjoy all things history. Recently while laying with a female friend of mine I was begged to watch this show ( Troy) of which she couldn’t stop talking. She however couldn’t understand as to why I was so Infuriated by all the black people on that show. I get that it’s not a true story so it doesn’t really have to be historically accurate but understand that people like me who take history seriously despise ridiculous representations of the past. Look at it this way ,if you were a boxer, martial artist, ballerina, or a car buff, and you saw those art forms being horribly mis-represented you would get annoyed too. Africa is full of so many veins of untapped history we don’t need to rewrite the past to be proud of black culture and black history. Clint Dicks it is foolish to believe that modern humans coming out of Africa were only a handful, and this small band is responsible for all humans outside of Africa. A more likely scenario is, some hospitable regions not affected by the last ice age, South of The Pyrenees and Alps in Europe and Himalayas in Asia were home for a diverse but still black modern human being, then about six thousand years ago these original humans began mating with the newly arrived Neanderthal/human mix from the far north forever changing the upper classes of our civilizations and for centuries these new humans coexisted with their non Neanderthal cousins. This is the story of Greece, Rome, Persia, India and China that our cowardly Historians decided to coverup. Shame

    It would be equally stupid fe. to have a white actor portraying Shaka Zulu... But sometimes such things do work, fe. when its a comedy, or if it`s done in a proper way and it fits the storyline. It worked well in the 1989 movie version of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata by Peter Brook. But it was a story about the history of mankind and the actors came from all over the world. A biblical movie fe. about the Genesis or Noah and the flood would also work with ethnic diversity.

    Is there "rich African history" though? I know jackshit about their history, culture and mythos prior white colonization. To be frankly my understanding of current Africans bogs down to a bunch of people living in constant poverty and killing each other with Kalashnikovs and riding Hilux'es with machineguns. That sounds racists, but it's not meant to be. It's rather ignorance caused by the fact that media doesn't try to reach me and showcase the African culture(they do show starving kids and savage warlords though), but rather blackwashes European history and mythos instead.

    as a writer and history fan, i am glad to hear someone talk about this problem. i have seen several series/movies where black characters were thrown in with no explanation or historical accuracy. sometimes topics like racism are even downplayed. instead of randomly putting black characters in a victorian england drama, i would rather see the movie industry aknowledge the unique and independent history of sub saharan africa. (and maybe make a new musical movie about an african princess instead of just making ariel black and call it a day, disney.)

    Ian Miller The problem with that game is that what the developers think is histoically accurate about life in the middle ages is actually a idealized fantasy for white males. The real middle ages were more diverse than they present it. At least I got the sense that the game was an insulting presentation of a white male power fantasy. Henry's father slapping his mother's ass in the first seconds of the game, literally every woman wants to bang Henry , (spoiler) when Henry finds his dead parents, he completely ignores his mother. It just goes on and on. I liked many parts of the game, but when it comes to historical accuracy, there is a good case to be made that the developers chose a version of history that is very pleasant for them (or their expected audience) to believe regardless of accuracy.

  • @earganon

    @earganon

    6 жыл бұрын

    First off, where is your evidence of the middle ages being more diverse than they presented, because it would appear as an uphill battle to prove such a claim. Secondly, I think your point regarding the white male power fantasy is you reading into/projecting onto things where there is nothing. Concerning the "white", no-one in the game is white, they are Germans, Czechs, and Hungarians (this is how we Europeans categorize by ethnicity) all slaughtering each other. If the game presented a "white power fantasy" all the "white" people would magically unite and stand against a foreign [put skin colour here] invader. In regards to the "male", the developers had to show the audience Henry came from a good loving home, as the breaking of the family is supposed to be the catalyst and main driving force of the story. The simplest way to illustrate this is by showing the parents are good to Henry and are still heavily in love with each other, in turn the quickest form to relay this information is by showing they are still playful/sexually attracted to one another even after all this time. Also of course everyone and their mother wants to sleep with Henry, the main protagonist (male or female) always gets all men/women. It's a sleazy way to show the player the character is of high importance in the community or charismatic without much effort. After all Henry is supposedly the hero of the story, the plot centers around him, everyone requires his help, and his help alone will resolve the matter. So simply put all men want to be him and all women want to sleep with him. I would like to conclude saying if anything the story is a hero power fantasy, not “white”, not “male”, and certainly not “white male”. If Henry was a Chinese woman in pre-Yuan China, all npc’s were of different Chinese provinces or Mongols, and the plot remained overall the same we similarly wouldn’t call it an Asian female power fantasy.
