Tekken 4 had some sick designs. Hobo Paul and hoodie Jin are the best those characters have ever looked. Unfortunately the gameplay was kind of ass and the designs that were bad were really fucking bad. Like bug Yoshimitsu, army Hwoarang, everything about King and Nina's horrible pink fetishwear.

It had a great modern design that fit well with the changing times and new millennium, characters went through heavy modern redesigns that contrasted with their stories. And the music helped a lot too, lot of electronic tracks there that changed with the course of the fight. Shame they went back to the more fantasy based Tekken after this, I loved this look so much more. Fortunately Tekken 7 is trying new things out again so hopefully that works out.

Whats wrong with Hworangs military uniform?

most endings aren´t canon but intros/prologue are all canon...so Paul DID beat Ogre, left because he thought it was over, ogre transformed into true ogre and jin beat him, after that heihachi attacked jin, jin transformed into devil jin, smashed heihachi through the wall and flew away

Shit on Tekken 4 all you want, but this game had a wonderful tone to it. It feels more mature than any of the other installments, and the music is some of the best in the series.

To me Tekken 4 felt like a true Street fighting game. I literally felt like I was having street fights in real life arenas. I personally loved this game

I miss when Namco used to treat Paul seriously. As you could see in his T4 ending, he fought hard through the championship, but his wealth and executive position eventually made him a shade of his former self. Only after seeing a picture of him on his glory days on Marshall's Dojo that Paul realizes that being a rich playboy wasn't him. And the scene of him throwing his shades away was a proof that old Paul was back... And in the next game, he's turned into an arrogant asshole who just wants to be number one, and gets humiliatedly defeated by Kuma, out of all things. And his ending? Him threatening aliens... *sighs*

It's sad. Paul keeps getting beat up by bears. The last 4 games (I'm assuming 7 will be no different canonically) are just him getting whupped by bears. Give it a rest Namco. Paul needs his moment.

FR, it feels like the not major characters are either reduced to comic relief (Eddy, Law, Paul, Yoshimitsu, pretty much all the anthropomorphic animals) or reduced to their one trait that makes them different (Marduk, King, Steve, Bryan, etc.)

Agreed. Devs tend to go cheesy on secondary characters as a reason to do not mess up with the lore of the game for upcoming entries in the series... Way too commom in fighting game franchises. (Some of them do not even have any good protagonist arc, tho)

not to mention that canonically, he was a badass who could go toe-to-toe with Kazuya. but since he's not a Mishima or has any relation to them, they had to find a way to keep him from interfering with the story, and so enter Kuma... i guess i should be glad that Namco hasn't yet nerfed Paul to kingdom come to complete his Danification. ​@UCHaGty-zUeuD5fD_Z6__wPQ and Law too, thanks for reminding.

+Super Dandy My personal was "Fetus". Creepy name, but awesome track, it was the song that played during the Prologue of each character. That shit was *dark,* bro! It felt like Tekken had suddenly become this underground fight club were you were getting involved with all sorts of mafias and crime bosses and really, really dark stuff. It felt like, at any moment, your character could've been shot at the back by some henchman while heading towards his or her next fight. Actually, that's basically what happened to Jin in this game! (although his case recquired A LOT of dudes since Jin is such a badass) At any rate, the story felt grim. Even Xiaoyu receiving that e-mail message about not trusting the Zaibatsu, that Heihachi was not what he seemed and all... and she starts distrusting everything around her and trying unveil the truth... man! Those storylines were *awesome!* Why did they have to get rid of them in Tekken 5? :(

Paul is neutral at best in the humor department. Both his endings in 1 and 2 weren't exactly humorous. Being boring is one thing, but being jobbed in the story is another. How does a guy who used to rival Kazuya and the guy who initially beat Ogre gets alot of heat for beating Panda? Fuck Harada and his story writers.

You can't be serious, outside the Mishimas, 70% of the characters don't take it too seriously. And even if they do, they end up comical despite the developer's intentions to make them serious.

T4 was the last Tekken game that actually had me interested in the main plot, I still think it has one of the hypest intros ever, it's just a small detail but I love how Kazuya was all tired and fucked up holding a pistol just from fighting Tekken Force dudes at the end of the intro, this was before jobbers really really REALLY just became jobbers (Looking at you Tekken7) and they started adding all this wacky shit like deflecting missiles with kicks and etc (still looking at you tekken7)

Paul's story in Tekken 4 says it for starters. Every game has a canonical ending as to who "won", and it's canon that Paul beat Ogre (but not True Ogre) in the third tournament.

@@anarchitron8332 weirdly If you see a tekken 4 battle with it's slow back dashing, limited launching and focus on pokes, it seems a bit more realistic.

Wrong about the prologue thing, Paul legitimately defeated Ogre (first form) in Tekken 3, it's 100% canon, he also defeated Kuma in 3 and later lost to him in 4, only to defeat him again in 5 and quit the tournament after, that technically makes Paul not only undefeated in 3 different Tekkens (2 : disqualified in the finals due to not arriving because of bad traffic, 3 : being undefeated throughout the entire thing and defeating the final challenger, 5 : getting to the quarter finals and quitting after his last victory) but also the only non Mishima character to win a Tekken tournament.

Except he never won. Jin won T3. If you beat last years evo champion in the winners finals in just one match of the set and then leave the event, you don't win Evo, you get DQ'd.

SJ.Fox Sure, Jin won T3, but he did compete in the tournament, which means he probably lost before winning, most likely to Paul, because he was chosen to fight True Ogre, think about it, if Paul got to Ogre it means he undoubtedly defeated Heihachi, and in order to face Heihachi you need to be out of opponents.

Tekken 4 was so dark and so serious. I actually likes the gritty animations in the beginning for each character; it really sets the stage/mood for their story.

Tekken 4 had the most atmosphere change, the most serious tone with little laughs. Even the music was crazy. The character design was even crazy. This is basically the 808's and Heartbreak of Tekken games

i loved Tekken 4. It was the most cinematic of all the previous games, with the intro movies with voice over, destructible environments, and uneven levels! And some characters had great new looks and move sets, plus the addition of Marduk and Steve Fox!

The most underrated fighting game ever, I know some of y'all hated this but I love the graphics, mechanics and etc

T4 is underrated but yet so iconic. The music, the atmosphere, and its presentation in general were the things that made this game great!

Tekken 4 is pure fun and has the best stages in the Tekken franchise ever! We need a Tekken 4 HD Remaster for the PS4 and Steam! I would purchase it over again in a heartbeat!

Tekken 4 always has my vote for "The Most Badass Tekken". The intro screen, the character select, the stage environment mechanics, the arcade presence, and the return of Kazuya had me sold.

love the fact that T4 had different final boss fight for certain characters. A very underrated entry in the series.

Honestly the uneven stages were such a cool idea. As far as I know this is the most unpolished Tekken gameplay wise but, was the last one with a more serious realistic tone and really cool character story arcs. If the gameplay was more balanced and less glitchy this would easily be my favorite Tekken. Love Tekken 5 but, half the cast becoming joke characters is such a sad thing to see. Tekken 6 turned the series into a fantasy anime and is sadly staying that way which is a shame. T7 is going to amazing but, ill miss the grittiness of T5 downwards.

I am so sad with what they did with Paul. Once Kazuya's equal now apart of the three stooges with Marshal and Forest. I would be happy if they did both. And yeah heihachi should not have really appeared in T5, everything about him in that game was a joke. Damn shame because he's such a cool villain. In my opinion T5: DR was the last Tekken to introduce cool characters. T6 on wards introduced some of my most hated characters. Lars, Alisa, and Leo, to name a few. In T7 although cute, that vocaloid cat girl does not belong in Tekken. I would rather have a Robot Roger Jr. at least that'd fit. The only "new" character I like is Kazuya's mom who's name escapes me.

LeninCake people were coming off of 3 and Tag. The roster was more confined. While it's still a great game and personally one of my favorites. The small roster turned a lot of people off.

If you do a count up t3 n t4 have roughly the same number roster, tag made 4 seem small due to alot of old characters returning just for tag

I did a tally, T3 has 22 characters and T4 has 23, both have 4 clones, 5 if you count mokujin n combot. Tag had 39 characters, with 10 clones. So inb4 T7 gets complaints of a "Small roster"

The T4 clones are christie, panda, miharu and violet all are respective clones of eddy, kuma, xiaoyu and lee. T3 clones are anna = nina, tiger = Eddy, panda = kuma and ogre and true ogre.

Perhaps, because of Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament 1, we expected too much about this game, otherwise it's pretty good and added new ideas (stages for instance). HeiHachi "Real men wear sumo gears" was Badass as hell.

I remember the first time seeing Tekken 4 in the arcade and thinking "This is some next-gen shit", I was 11 at the time.

Man the MUSIC, narrator, art style, direction & aesthetics of the stages was lit af. It really brought out the hype. Need to bring it back with updated graphics. My favorite stage is the underground fight club scene. The rock esk music with crowd cheers when you got a hard hit or knockdown and sound echos was PERFECT

Just for clarity Hwoarang's 2p costume in this game is in reference to the Military service he ditched to participate in the tournament for.

The last Tekken game where you could actually take Paul seriously.

So Max was one of those people that hated this game, eh? Well, as someone who started Tekken with 3, I for one loved, and still love this game! Story, soundtrack, unique stages, character costumes, all was just top notch in this game, and no other Tekken afterwards came close to achieving again. Looking forward to T7!! A few more days!

this is my shit back in my high school days. people would line up in malls to fight me and my jin kazama. the position switch/ grab switch in this game is a game changer.

The only Tekken with no Jack. Also, Kazuya's ending was scary as Hell. Love the dark atmosphere of Tekken 4 and the brave changes in gameplay.

The stage transitions in DOA are amazing, shame the series has such a bad reputation.

I remember playing this in a arcade once and being blown away from the graphics along with the characters changed design. I loved the character select music "Jet" along with hearing the words, "Welcome to the king of iron fist tournament 4". Man I loved this game, but I wouldn't know until recently how disliked this game was. I loved the character designs in this game, Jin's, Xiaoyu's, Kuma's, Julia's and Howarang's.

Tekken 4 was underrated as it's story was phenomenal. Especially when Jin and Kazuya fight and the badass Hon-Maru track played.

Something I really liked about the older fighting games is that you didn't have these ridiculously long combos.

This is and always will be, my favorite tekken of all time just for the aesthetic, music, and feel of the game.

Tekken 4 was one of the most ambition Tekken's IMO.

Paul really did win Tekken 3 Max, its canon. Also Tekken got the whole uneven stage thing in this game from VF3.

Tekken 3 has Gon. Tekken 7 has Akuma and Goose Howard. And Tekken 4 has Maximilian Dood.

I really don’t know why some people give Tekken 4 a bad rep. In my opinion, this is probably the best Tekken game of the series. It has the most serious/darkest story out of all of the games. Also, I know that the character roster is short, but I have no problem with that; I think it’s fine. Even the character endings are one of the best in the series. The fighting locations in this game are also the best Tekken locations of the series, with some beautiful, exotic, and eerie stages. The gameplay is amazing and smooth once you get used to playing it. Not to mention this game probably has the best, most atmospherical and memorable music out of the franchise, but hey, this is me talking here lol. So yeah that’s all I have to say lol.

Bro Tekken 4 was my first Tekken besides Tag tournament and holy shit, the dark tone and more serious narrating is incredible, I love it. The only thing that I love more is Tag’s character select music

Facts, wizardry.

I think this Tekken has more realism than the others. I’ve noticed that this one does not have a tone of fantasy tone to it and sticks to more mature tones. I actually enjoyed this change. Also the limited character pool added to the tone as well. It felt more “close knit”.

Wow Tekken 4 graphics way ahead of its time. Amazing from Bandai!

This is one of the Tekken games that went under my radar and looking back, I missed out man :(

Tekken 4 one most underrated games in Tekken Series period from Stages to Music to Characters .You couldn't call it ambitious. But you could still call it one of the better fighting games in years

The storyline and aesthetics made it feel like a real tournament

This game will always be my favorite Tekken, and my favorite video game of all time. Some of my earliest memories are of playing this game all the way back in 2001. Even though I was barely even a year old. The music, the gameplay, the hoodie and other awesome outfits for characters. Hwoarang's military outfit, Marduk's vest and long hair, Paul's T shirt and jeans with his hair down, Yoshimistsu's cockroach outfit (his best outfit in my opinion), Xioayu's track suit, King's long hair and pants, all of these need to make a comeback, even if in a DLC for 7. This game made me a Jin main at heart. Even now I own multiple copies due to discs not working for many reasons. I cherish this game, it brings back some really good memories of unlocking more characters, playing Tekken Force, and I know it's awkward but those colored squares on the character usage screen? To this day those colors stick with me and man I love that palette. The water as well, that classic early 2000s arcade water, being able to fight in the water is so underrated. Each character having a unique color on their portrait was awesome as well. The stages in this game felt real and their music absolutely dialed in the atmosphere of each area. My favorite has always been the Jungle and The city. Every Tekken game after this was Tekken 5 version 2, 3, 4, etc. In my opinion this game had a great feel in terms of it's dark tone (what I like to call the Nu-metal tone having grown up with that music) and semi-realistic gameplay (as far as fighting games go anyway) and if they even at least did a spinoff series with this style I'd be very happy. Characters had real storylines, each person had a reason for entering this tournament and got something out of it in their respective endings and stories. In other words, I want this to be backwards compatible Sony/Namco. Make it happen please. I love this game.

In the story, Hworang escapes Korean military duty (mandatory to serve in Korea) to fight Jin that is why he's in military gear.

This game and Tekken 3 has special place in my heart

I love Tekken 4. The dark tone made my favorite Tekken.

I loved this game. The character design, the stages, the music and the stories.

I rather take this over t6 and tag 2 imo

I remember this being my first Tekken game, it was really fun and gave me an interest in fighting game. That being said looking back I can see why fighting seem to be more of a mental fight for me

My favorite game in the series. Music, stages, character design and move set were all amazing. Also it was not about bouncing juggles like some of the newer releases lol.

What I liked about Tekken 4 was that they tried to do something with their looks. Now, they just went back to how everybody looked in Tekken 3.

Less modes, smaller cast, more glitches, horribly balanced, untechable guaranteed launcher throws. I respectably disagree. T4 only has great concepts with the worst execution of any main titled tekken.

Depends. Tekken 6 is probably the most balanced a Tekken game ever was. Unfortunately it was balanced in a kind of boring way. Tekken 4 is anything but boring, but unfortunately that also makes it a pain in the ass to play once you get to a certain level. So you have balanced but boring versus stylish but shit.

SJ.Fox the force mode actually worked in 4 tho but in Tekken 6 sceaniro campign even tho it was easy its was mega broke try land a 3 string on the enemy and you would just spin and miss such a shame 💩 but i agree with all you said about 4 was still fun tho

Gavo Kai, if you dont know how to lock on to an enemy despite the tutorial and controller settings, you can't blame the game people were able to practice potential TTT2 combos in that game with ease

Paul actually did win... like he legit won annnnnnnd walked away just like the intro says. it's legit lol. I miss Tekken 4... it's the last Tekken where I absolutely LOVED the OST. I fucking love the music in this game. sooooo much.

The last tekken with paul given a serious back story and a optimistic ending that basically teaches you " be yourself "

I played this one much later compared to other Tekkens. I actually kinda like the fact that they tried a bunch of new stuff and went with a more serious tone. New designs for everyone, interactive music, weird ass stages, new system for throws. My favorites will remain as 3 and 5 though.

People can say what they want about Tekken 4s gameplay, but I think its the step to the right direction for the series.

For me this is the best Tekken, and probably the best fighting game ever.

tekken 4 has one of my all time favorite soundtracks from the tekken franchise,as well as some of my favorite character costumes(Jin's badass flame jacket,Paul's homeless look,eddy Gordo as Christies second costume) and it also has some of the best atmosphere as well,feels dark,serious,and melancholic(even the voice for the character introductions sounds dark) I love this game for what it is,great underrated ps2 fighter
