Black Roughneck Monitor in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is the second day of a four-day trip in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน). I spent the first day and a half walking and looking for and filming birds and insects, but my gear is very heavy, and I really fancied finding a nice location where I could set up a hide and see if anything passed by. It is always risky doing that, because you might sit for days and see nothing, but on this day, I hit the jackpot!
I had only been sitting about 90 minutes when up the river came a wonderful and very rarely seen black roughneck monitor Varanus rudicollis (เห่าช้าง) - absolutely astonishing! And then to make it even more amazing it stopped to sunbathe for over 10 minutes right in front of my hide. This is the great advantage of being in a hide. When I do see something, there is a good chance that it won't see me, so I'll get some lovely natural behaviour.... which is priceless.

Yeah... the great advantage of filming at a format about the export format. Here I filmed at 8K but edited at 4K so it was the equivalent of having a 200-1,200mm zoom lens with the same quality and minimum focus.

I saw one crossing the road from a distance in that area the day before, and assumed it to be a water monitor, but now I have my doubts. Several herpers I know that spend a lot of time in KK have never seen one there, so it really was a very special moment when the bumps came into focus, and I realised what it was.

Yes, it did indeed... it paid off big time! And actually, on previous occasions I've sat on location for up to 5 days and hardly saw anything, so I was incredibly fortunate this day. Incidentally, you might wish to know that there is a behind-the-scenes video for this clip, too.

Wow I am very surprised this doesn't have more views. To see one in the wild is one thing extraordinary, let alone get film of one displaying basking behaviours for an extended period of time- and in very good quality! Awesome footage

Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, it was an extraordinary experience, but as you pointed out I don't seem to get many views on the channel for the reptile clips at least. You may be interested to know that there is another clip showing the behind-the-scenes footage of this story. I always get a few more views and subscribers when viewers share my clips on Facebook or other sites, so if you are able to do that it would be greatly appreciated.

Fantastic footage, Darryl! What a great entry as it appears from between the tree roots. We do have trail camera footage of a juvenile, but that does not really count. It certainly is nothing compared to the quality of your video.

Yes... I was so pleased with that first shot.... absolutely my best work darling.... 55. Actually, I think I earned it. You know how it is in a hide after a while... you sometimes rest your eyes and take a break, but at this point I was still constantly looking out of the hide, and just caught a bit of movement in the forest behind the bamboo, so I had time to get the camera lined up and ready. Unfortunately, it came around the bamboo faster than I expected for the second shot, and also moved from shade into strong sun, so I had no choice other than to ditch that shot. That's the problem when you use manual for everything. FYI, I shoot everything on 8K now unless I want slow motion, but export at 4K, so that opening shot was at the 600mm end of my zoom, but then doubled in editing to give the equivalent of a 1,200mm lens.

@@thailandwild4897 I think these true forest monitors are very wary. One wrong move and it will run off. So, well done to nail it like this. And even though I don't spend a lot of time in hides, I do know how much time goes into it and how rare it is to get something rare in front of the lens. But when it happens, it makes all those hours of waiting worth it.

As far as I know, this species has only been seen at Khao Pra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary. I suspect that Dumeril's or brown roughneck monitor might be more widespread on Phuket, especially in mangrove areas.
